Frank Yang If I'm being totally honest, I wasn't that excited for last night's Magnetic Fields show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. After all, their last few records didn't especially bowl me over and I was feeling somewhat pessimistic about what to expect from a performer who's very much on record as being disdainful of the entire phenomenon of live performance. I had seen them before at their last visit to Toronto in July 2004 and while my memories of that show are fond, I couldn't say it was an especially [...]

It's a poorly kept secret in the Canadian music industry that Danko Jones is an angry man. (Danko Jones himself, is a poorly kept secret in the music industry, as well!) Jordan Robson-Cramer of Magic Weapon / Miracle Fortress/Sunset Rubdown has attested to Mr. Jones' hostility in interview , and the man wears his attitude like a single black glove. That is, foolishly, and mostly in a music video. But could there be something more behind his angry man persona? Yes. It's because he comes [...]

Pictured: DevilDriver Photos and review by Chris Rowella Toad's Place is probably the best place to see a metal show in Connecticut. Not too big, not too small, good sound, and (for venues around here) decent drink prices. Most metal tours end up in Hartford's Webster Theater or skip the Nutmeg State altogether, so I was excited to see a great tour package like this end up at Toad's. Unfortunately we arrived late and only caught two songs from Thy Will Be Done . For [...]

Are you ready to rock? If you are then I have some shows for you! On Thursday, I am all about Those Darlins' at TTs. On Saturday there's a great lineup at Church with The Dirty Truckers, Muck & the Mires and Watts and at Great Scotts, there's Reverse and Sun Lee [...]
Even though we stopped paying close attention a while ago, Frank Black has been keeping busy over the years aside from the reformation of The Pixies. Under a variety of names, he has managed to explore every weird idea that he bottled up over the years, for better or worse. Usually, though, they just sound like Pixies songs that could benefit from the rest the band adding their contributions. With that said, this new project sounds the weirdest. On March 30, the singer will release NonStopErotik under the name Black Francis. Based [...]

http://www.flickr.com/photos/b etweenloveandlike/3766150823/ , originally uploaded by BetweenLoveandLike . Pixies and Grand Duchy frontman Black Francis (or Frank Black or Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV when he's feeling most jaunty) has gone from songs about UFOs, to songs of love to most currently, songs of sex and his love for the vagin , exhibitionism, and...The Flying Burritto Brothers? Out 3/30, NonStopErotik features 10 original songs plus most interestingly, a cover of the Flying Burrito Brothers track "Wheels" from their Gilded Palace of Sin record. "I am Man Ray [...]

Pixies frontman, Black Francis , is returning with a new album on March 30. Cooking Vinyl will release Francis's latest solo effort, NonStopErotik . Francis claims to have recorded the record by candlelight in the wee hours of the morning with little or no sleep. It certainly sets a potential mood for the album. Check out the full track listing for NonStopErotik after the jump. NonStopErotik track list: 1. Lake of Sin 2. O My Tidy Sum 3. Rabbits 4. Wheels 5. [...]

This leg of our Black History Month tour takes us to the town that - much like New York City - seems to inspire a constant influx of musicians from other parts of the country. Sure, you'll find some L.A. natives among the town's finest, but many of the artists on our list, be they bluesmen or soul sirens, were drawn to Los Angeles by the tremendous amount of action going on there, not only in terms of the biz, but the powerful music being made under that SoCal sun. N.W.A. [...]

What's in a band name, and does it even matter so long as the music's good? Case and point, post-punk pseudo newbie's The Soft Pack . Formerly the Muslims (changed after some offensive remarks were made), the San Diego four piece adopted the name of their first effort (also titled The Soft Pack ), and put out their second full-length record. Like the tunes leading up to this, their self-titled debut as The Soft Pack is the kind of music that promotes lots of jumping around and the strong possibility for alcohol abuse around lots of people. The [...]

Songwriter Ferraby Lionheart departed L.A. for Nashville to work on his sophomore album, "The Jack of Hearts," which is due this spring. The Living Sisters , Willoughby and Paige Stark support. ... Jack's Mannequin appears at the Viper Room in a warm-up gig for its upcoming tour. ... Also: Tenacious D , [...]
