I'm embarrassed to admit it's been almost two months since Weiss, an A&R man disguised as one of my favorite bloggers , sent out an e-mail to promote The Slow Twilight , the new release from 5 O'Clock Shadowboxers – a collaboration between Zilla Rocca and Fresh Cherries From Yakima's Douglas Martin . (You may remember Zilla and Douglas as past contributors to the I Used to Love H.E.R. series, both of them loyal Wu-Tang devotees.) Why embarrassed? Because after one spin of The Slow Twilight – [...]

There's no right way to write about your friends' music. Gush effusively and you look like a fawning cheerleader. Ignore it and you do a disservice to the people that should matter the most. That said-conflict of interest aside- The Slow Twilight is not only one of the finest indie-rap records of recent vintage, but it's a flat-out great record. You probably know Zilla Rocca and Douglas Martin from their various blogs, their Clean Guns and Fresh Cherries from Yakima material, and occasional contributions to this website. They're two [...]

Douglas Martin normally blogs at Fresh Cherries from Yakima. He has never been to Yakima, but he can do the Watusi. Being the world's foremost blipster sure is a thankless job. Ever since I was given the opening quote in that infamous January 2007 feature in the New York Times about that new, cutting-edge subculture that long before had merely been known as "Afropunk" or "Tight Pants Wearin'-Ass Negroes" or whatever, my life's been a whirlwind of dust, from being a public representative of Pacific-Northwestern black kids who [...]

Any sort of objectivity I may have had regarding Zilla Rocca's music has long since passed. It's near impossible to be objective when evaluating a friend's music, particularly when said friend praises you on the great Wake Your Daughter Up f or the "massive amounts of weed [you] smoke and the hot women [you] get." So I'll spare the long-winded, biased paean to Zilla's ability to rap. Instead, I'll point you towards the following reviews, whose praise I wholeheartedly co-sign. And of course, download the mixtape below. After all, it's hard to dislike a rapper [...]
