Somehow, this review never made it up onto thecolorawesome after the show on July 25th, 2009. It was a great show, so I'm publishing the review, even if it is a few months late. - Paige Of Montreal played the Fox Theater in Oakland last Saturday. I'd been a bit on the fence about going. I'd already seen, shot and reviewed them twice since Skeletal Lamping was released last year. I decided if I could shoot the show I'd go, otherwise I'd take a pass. Lucky for me I [...]

The King Can Drink the Harbor Dry (Pet Marmoset Records) [ANTIQUE POP] Dimes, can you spare a brother? Spare me your tedious mid-tempo strumming, wan melodies, sedate vocals, and especially, your humorless lyrical gloss on a CliffsNotes summary of a high-school American history textbook. Yes, your sophomore release, The King Can Drink the Harbor Dry, sure sounds pretty at first, with its tastefully restrained acoustic arrangements and careful harmonies—but it doesn't take too many similar-sounding songs for those qualities to become liabilities. And I had to get [...]

Photography by Suckcess Folks who know me know that I love riding my bike in less than optimum conditions. I love riding in the rain, in the cold, and with the time change, in the dark. Love it. I'm no daredevil or anything, I just that feeling of being the only idiot out there on a bicycle, experiencing those moments, which makes them just a little bit more special for me. Friday was one of those moments. After the Roll bike event [...]

Come one come all to the magnificent and frightening Voodoo Experience 2009 Halloween spooktacular held deep in the swampy bayous of New Orleans at City Park! From outrageous costumes to glowing praying mantises, this year's Halloween celebration drew in an outrageous number of people to catch some of this year's hottest acts. Fans braved the freezing rain, which hailed all throughout the first day, and even withstood the muddy after effects on Saturday and Sunday. And all but one small setback (K'NANN canceled his performance last minute on Saturday) made this an exciting and fun filled weekend [...]

It's been over ten years since dancehall's original Grammy Kid, Shabba Ranks, performed in Europe and from all accounts, his following there has not diminished significantly. Staying true to the genre, Shabba called for none other than the experienced band Ruff Kut - Beenie Man's band - to accompany him on tour, and quite sensibly, Ruff Kut packed their bags and caught a flight. That's probably not the prescription the Doctor, Beenie Man, would have ordered, but this has been a rough season for bands; they have been feeling the pinch of the recession as artistes [...]
We Need a High-Quality Paid Webcast for Phish Concerts After witnessing the evolving and ever-expanding online activity surrounding Phish's recent reunion tour, I'm now thoroughly convinced that the Phish fan base is primed and ready for a high-quality and paid live video stream for the band's next tour. If done properly and in innovative Phish fashion, it could create an untapped revenue stream for the band while allowing more Phish fans to engage with the band's music – in particular those fans that can't make it out to every show on tour. Given the [...]

By DL and FP. FRIDAY Denton VS Dallas: DJ G / Yeah Def / OPS / Teamwork VS Sober / Killtron / Genova /Tommy L33 Jon3s (Hailey's): Man, I'm always up for a good "Dallas VS Denton" debate. Nothing more mature than that. Anyways, this is a good idea, and though I'd like to see the same concept executed with live bands, well, I actually wouldn't, since that's a little more lop-sided of a contest, unfortunately. (DL) [...]

Frank Yang As with pretty much every night last week, Friday came with a list of entertainment options a mile long, and while some more intrepid types tried to take in as much of it as possible via club and in-store hopping, I was content to settle in at the Rivoli for what promised to be an exceedingly solid night of music headlined by Vancouver's Dan Mangan . A bit of set time miscommunication meant missing much of The Sure Things' set but I did manage to catch their last few [...]

Tues September 29th – Boulder, Co Survived camping! Marshmellows, fire-roasted saltines, and shiskebobs. Long drive today through Wyoming (ALL of it), but we had some encouragement along the way: God bless Wyoming. We played our quietest set ever at Laughing Goat Café in Boulder Co. Very friendly crowd – they kept telling us to play louder, but the sound guy kept telling us to turn down. He sort of looked like he was going to have a heart attack. OH WELL! Wed [...]

Fabric double whammy. Oh yes. As you may have noted - it's all over the interweb at the moment - it's going to be Fabric's 10th birthday this month. Over the weekend of the 16th/17th October, they have put together some of the biggest lineups they've ever managed, featuring quite literally a MILLION DJs; with the real plus that from Saturday night, the whole place doesn't close until Monday morning. I'd imagine that room 2 at 4am on Monday will be the most hilarious/frightening scene you've ever witnessed - worth it just for that, surely. [...]

Arriving just in time for my weekend road trip, Built to Spill's latest There is No Enemy provided the perfect relief from the upteenth time through They Might Be Giants' Here Comes Science . While it's cute hearing your four-year old singing about the elements and circulatory system, the wife and I needed some Doug Marsch guitar redemption. At first There Is No Enemy is kind of lulling, but slowly but surely, moments arrive, melodies burrow and before we knew it, the album has [...]
Sunday, September 27, 2009 Hello friends. This week I've got a new album from Austin's Monument To No One, plus a few notes on musical coincidences (i.e. a new band I'm excited about), how to cut through all the ACL bullshit (hello Leatherbag), some reissues (horray Octopus Project), and the top way to not get good press (sorry Deaf Ears). Let's get this show on the road: Monument To No One - Self Titled MTNO's debut LP captures the brazen guitar riffs and [...]

Today's diaries come from (in no particular order) AP "Chinatown" Kryza, David "I'm such an asshole" Robinson, Mark "Eagle Eye" Stock (MS), Matthew "Laker Fan" Singer (MSR), Justin "Kickenbaque" Kent (videos), Jenny "British Intern" Booth, Michael "What Year is it?" Mannheimer, Matthew "Carnage" Korfhage and Casey "Opposite of Fair" Jarman. It's been a helluva long weekend. Hope you had as much fun (and drank less) than we did. -Ed. SATURDAY 8:30 am @ Home Just realized I had a tuna sandwich [...]

What more can we say? Who needs much of an intro when you've got 5,000 words on day 3 of MFNW, complete with Sunny Day Real Estate, Bad Brains, the LC showcase and drunken antics at the afterparty. Contributors include Mark Stock, Matthew Singer, Jenny Booth, Aaron Mesh, Kelly Clarke, AP Kryza, David Robinson, Devan Cook, Matthew Korfhage and Rebecca Raber. Michael and Casey both tweated the night away, and those will be added later. 3:35 pm @ Work Realizing now that determining who to see on tonight's bill is [...]
Our Friday Ten operates as a less than subtle reminder to join TVD this evening at The Writer's Center in Bethesda for the commencement of the Story/Stereo series. We'd like to thank its curators Chad Clark of Beauty Pill and Matt Byars of The Caribbean for lending their sensibilities to the blog this week and Roofwalkers for just about everything else in between. Like you didn't see this Friday theme coming from a [...]

This is seriously going to be one of the best shows to come through Louisville all year. Fruit Bats with Iran (the side project of Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio) & Kevin Barker are playing Zanzabar (2100 S Preston St) on Friday, September 18 at 9pm for only $10/12. Fruit Bats are an unfortunately under-appreciated band that has been around forever, but whose time may finally be coming with [...]
