Paul Michel has been a steady fixture in the DC music scene over the last decade. Having played in bands such as The Out_Circuit, The Hard Tomorrows, and Georgie James among others, and for most of that time, a solo artist in his own right. I've known Paul for just as long, sharing many mutual [...]
One of our all-time favorite musicians and all-around great guy Ian McLagan brings his Bump Band to Houston for a free concert today (Oct. 15) at 6:30 p.m. in Discovery Green park. McLagan is, of course, the greatest rock keyboard player in the world who's played on albums by the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Thin Lizzy, Robert Earl Keen, Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, the Georgia Satellites and many more. He's prominently featured on the new live James McMurtry CD/DVD, Live In Europe . His latest album is [...]

Blk Jks Play Spaceland On Thursday Nights like Thursday are just a cruel joke to live music fans. It's another insane week of shows - old legends, new legends, 90's heroes and current Pitchfork darlings. I caught Polvo last Saturday. The problems I had with their set list a few months back at the Echoplex were corrected. Great set. They played everything I wanted to hear. Monday 10/12/09 [Pick of the Night] Light FM [...]

Sunday dawns to another post-rock tableau of sleeping bags, snoring folks and sun creeping into the DS/Georgie house in beautiful Cambridge. Today is the scheduled arrival of The Magnificent , the kindly benefactors who will be supporting us for the next week with van, navigation, and gear. We meet James, Matt and Charlie, who are obviously as great a bunch of fellas as we could hope to be trapped in close quarters with. Best of all (well, for me, at least) James and Matt have contrived to supply me with a freshly set-up SG, which plays like [...]

The world in 1976 looked and sounded a heck of a lot different than it did in 1969. When you went to a club it was most likely a fern bar. The ladies wore hot pants and halter tops, men wore stacked heels and checkered pants. The 1970s had its own stupid haircut: the shag (later replaced by another all-star stupid haircut, the mullet). Music was becoming more rhythmic and slick, it would be another year or so before we'd call it "disco." Music more often than not was made for dancing - even at a fern bar. [...]

spotted: beardless devendra banhart. for shame. As some of you know, Monday was National Man Day and FMLY remained silent to the observed holiday. Well to close the week I thought it'd be nice to make a post for all of the men out there perusing the internet while curling their beard between their fingers. This post is to beards and the men that have them...and not Devendra Banhart. Dodos - Beards Natalie Portman's Shaved Head - Beard Lust Thunderbirds Are Now! - My [...]

Did I grab your attention with that headline? Good. Orange has put together a very nifty giveaway for this year's Glastonbury . You simply guess where in his field a bull named Desmond (yes, a real bull) will be at 3pm every day. They've set it up like a kind of grid, so you essentially pick a square and let the dice fall where they may. They have 18 pairs of tickets, so you certainly have more than one chance to get it right. Take your shot here . They have a 'bull cam' and have [...]

This is the week where former pop idols come back out to play. Eminem , Andre 3000 , Green Day and Tori Amos all have new albums out. Don't mind me; I'll be the guy in the music nerd corner listening to mewithoutYou , Passion Pit , that collection of Iron & Wine b-sides, Jason Lytle (of Grandaddy) and The Field instead. And yes, I'm aware that Green Day came out on Friday. That doesn't make [...]

Title Tracks Every Little Bit Hurts [Single] Dischord Records [2009] Fire Drill Review: "Every Little Bit Hurts" is the debut single from Title Tracks, which is the new project from John Davis (Q And Not U, Georgie James). John writes and records everything but has assembled a live touring band to launch his new brand of high energy power punk that sounds like it will pack an entertaining punch when the album releases later [...]
Man, it sure has been a long time since I've done one of these "odds and ends" posts. I used to do these every few days, and use them to aggregate a bunch of short pieces of news and information that might not otherwise warrant their own blog posts. But then I met Twitter , and all my extraneous bits and pieces of knowledge (and lack of knowledge) starting going there instead. And while I can't say that that's necessarily going to change, I want to start doing "odds and ends" posts again to make [...]

Some bands were created to sell out massive arenas. Others, like of Montreal , thrive in more intimate settings, where theatrical antics, soul-baring vocals, and frenetic flamboyance are more affective from a few feet away. The sold out Paradise Rock Club provided ample space for Kevin Barnes and his fellow Elephant 6-ers to deliver nothing short of the spectacle fans have learned to expect from the Athenians of Georgia. Beneath his customary sparkly blue eye shadow, Barnes kicked off the set in glam–rock star fashion with the heavy cadence of "Misguisings" from [...]
