Interpol get a lot of shit heaped upon them. From the constant references to Joy Division & The Chameleons, down to the criticism of Paul Banks' admittedly oft-baffling lyrics. 2007's Our Love To Admire seemed like the flashpoint for everyone who'd been patiently waiting for a major screwup to release steady streams of contempt and disdain in Interpol's direction. I actually included OLTA in my Best Albums of 2007 list, and while in retrospect I'm not sure I didn't put it there just to piss off people who wouldn't stop prattling on about [...]
Back in 1997 Anthony Lovett and Matt Maranian wrote and published what eventually became my favorite Los Angeles guidebook. That book's name was (and is) LA Bizarro . A few years ago on this website I talked to Matt about the original book's undertaking ( fun interview with Matt here ). Since that time the two authors have now revised, updated and significantly expanded that original tome, and their collective output was published by Chronicle Books just this fall. In the 2009 updated edition of LA Bizarro (available at the time of this [...]
A Classic Education A Classic Education are a six-piece band from Bologna, Italy whose epic melodramas seem to attracting much attention. They played Indietracks in 2008 and are frequent visitors to London and further afield. Following a trip to CMJ in New York in October, they're back in the UK this month: they play at the Lexington on 26 November and the Buffalo Bar the following night. They have released two records: an [...]
Here's the skinny - no pun intended. There is no order to all of this, but it seems to be working for HappyParts. I certainly don't do any of this perfectly. On top of all this believe in timeless recordings, accept that people are busy, and attention span is the new revenue - so when's it's there, carpe' diem. Join Gym and go every day. Be friendly there. But don't be a creep. Do Cardio 45 minutes @ 3.8 mph at 11 point incline. (random fat burner button) 100 crunches afterwards. And [...]
You may not know Fred but the chances are you will be familiar with one, if not more, of their songs. Over the past year they have become a firm fixture on Irish radio with a series of singles off third album Go God Go that have seen them take their suitably off-kilter Cork roots and polish them up into the brightest of pop music. Why then do they find themselves playing the basement of a larger venue that has played host to many of their contemporaries. It's hard to understand but somewhere along the line something is [...]
By Carrie Brownstein And it's naptime. ( courtesy of The Patton Veterinary Hospital ) It's hard to believe that we've reached the end. For the past two weeks, all of us -- the NPR Music Team, a handful of outside contributors and myself -- have explored the last 10 years in music. Did we cover [...]
To start, I'll note I was quickly hooked on both Atreyu and Hollywood Undead after hearing them both on the Madden soundtrack. Thus with my limited exposure to the metal genre, I arrived at the Showbox ready for Atreyu. I arrived in time to heat up with the crowd for about fifteen minutes before the group took the stage. I must mention that this was a very all-ages crowd: along with the teen+ contingent, I saw some baby booomers and a couple of children that couldn't be more than eight. The crowd [...]
Live: KISS and Buckcherry at the Rose Garden, 11.17.09 It's interesting to think about the pre-show rituals for a KISS concert in 2009. There's less beer swilling and doobie smoking in the parking lot, and a lot more face-painting with the fam before packing into the mini-van to head down to the arena. I was standing in front of the stage with four other (real) photographers right before the show. I stared out into the large crowd ... well, not just any crowd-the KISS Army! KISS Nation! Which is sort [...]
In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Blake Butler is the rare young writer who consistently and effectively challenges his readers. Scorch Atlas is a haunting collection of interconnected stories and vignettes, a dystopian work of genius. The book itself is a work of art. The internal pages are individually distressed, and the page edges and cover appear burnt and scarred, and the design complements the book's theme perfectly. Matt [...]

Right, well excited about this! After years of wanting to get something like this started, but never feeling like the time was quite right, I've finally bitten the bullet and, in conjunction with Multiverse (home of the labels Tectonic , Kapsize , Earwax and Caravan ), Build Recordings is go. Zin and the Art of Vomiting
My very good friend Randy Fuller has a really cool blog that is not about rock and roll. It's about wine, but he wrote an excellent piece recently on rock and roll wines. Actually, it's about good wine in bottles with rock and roll labels - Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is there, so are the Rolling Stones, and even a Woodstock poster bottle. As I said, very cool, and you can read it here . I've known Randy for many years now, we went [...]
Diamond Rings – All Yr Songs
Tonight's song comes from John O'Regan, and his indie-pop/electronic-folk (yeah I'm genre tagging something electronic-folk) side-project Diamond Rings; his main project is fronting the Toronto-based indie-rock act The D'Ubervilles. As far as I can tell, the ridiculously charming All Yr Songs can only be found on a 7-inch vinyl split-release featuring Diamond Rings and Kingston, Ontario's PS I Love You. Unfortunately, said release has been sold out and I have no leads on how to get more music from Diamond Rings. If anyone has any information on a forthcoming release from the band, let me know. Until then, you [...]

My Last 1,000 Words On Gabriella Cilmi, Gabriella Cilmi, Gabriella Cilmi
I wrote this post over a year ago - in August 2008, to be exact - after I got a cease and desist for posting a song by a girl named Gabriella Cilmi. For whatever reason, I didn't post this. Maybe I figured some mysterious record company man in a long black coat with scars on his face would whack me in the parking lot if I did. Not so worried about that now. And, if you don't mind me noting: as of today - November 20, 2009 - I haven't heard a lot [...]

Viva Rose City
When did this record come out? May ? Jeez Louise, it really takes some time to get around to these things. I meant to pick up Viva Voce's Rose City when it was released, but I never did; and not until after their excellent show at the Seattle Center Mural was I finally compelled to get my grubby little paws on it. I think you'll be glad I did. Or, at least, I'm glad I did. Can't really say what you'll think. . [...]

Bass Oddity
David Bowie - Crystal Japan No posts for a while so I thought I'd come through with a little something for the weekend. David Bowie is a rather divisive figure among Dilate Choonz bloggers - some of us think he's a genius, others think he's a complete dud. I must admit that listening to 80s albums like Tonight and Never Let Me Down would swing one towards the latter category fairly quickly, but if you look at his 70s work, he put very few feet wrong. [...]

FT5: Album Covers of 2009 (So Far)
At a time when we are all witnessing the CD's imminent demise and the convenience of digital files running rampant, thankfully from an art perspective, a vinyl re-emergence is upon us. While sound quality is obviously seen as the most important reason why we are seeing audiophiles jumping back on the vinyl bandwagon, album artwork is also getting a much deserved close-up. With the vinyl album requiring more elaborate artwork packages, bands are re-thinking the overall aesthetic and producing some great work, which only enhances the overall music experience. 2009 has been a great year not only for the ears, [...]

Adventures in YouTubin' 5 – The Prelinger Archives Are The Shit!
I was reading my buddy Nathaniel's recent blog entry on a rad fan-made video for the Atlas Sound / Stereolab collab (rhymes lol) "Quick Canal," featuring lots of retro kitsch stock footage. Broadcast, you need to find the dude who made this video. Anyway, seeing the video reminded me of something Lana discovered not too long ago called The Prelinger Archives . As Regis Philbin used to say in the Mr. Phipps Tater Crisps commercials: " I LOVE 'EM! " The Prelinger Archives is a mindblowingly expansive collection of public domain films from pre and [...]
