Think About Life (Photo: Richmond Lam) Day 2 of CMJ I chose to catch the first set at the Windish Agency showcase at the Mercury Lounge, where Lia Ices started the night, followed by Javelin's boombox-stacked stage and goofy, tropical jams and The XX's bedtimey pop. After Lia, I headed down to Arlene's Grocery to catch the "M" for Montreal Showcase, then went to Santos to see upstairs headliners Cymbals Eat Guitars. I was using a little Lumix, and it died about five photos into Lia Ices' set. It came back for Beast's set at Arlene's [...]

CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
This is an ever changing and (hopefully) expanding list of some of the songs I have mentioned before in this blog or simply stuff I have found somewhere on the web that I find interesting, but have no time to write about. All files have been found somewhere in cyberspace (and NONE of them have uploaded by me, so I cannot help you with any requests you might have - just keep returning and something new might pop up), so they will be available until the artists, record labels, fans, whatever decide to remove them. Thanks to a few readers, [...]
Happy Autumnal Equinox! I can't believe that we are entering the fall season, how did that happen? Fortunately there are many shows to occupy our time and to keep us from thinking about the upcoming cold weather that right around the corner. On Thursday I hope you got you code to see Polyphonic Spree at the Paradise. If you didn't, there's always uke master Melvern Taylor at Toad or you can go to the Middle East to catch Hollywood starlet turned to rocker, Juliette Lewis. On Friday, there are lots of great choices and you can't go wrong with any [...]

I've just returned from an excellent weekend at the Green Man festival in the Brecon Beacons. There will be plenty of proper reviews elsewhere I'm sure so here's a quick list of things I particularly enjoyed over the last couple of days. Wilco (pictured above) playing Hoodoo Voodoo, not a song I've seen them perform before. The daughter of Beth Jeans Houghton's bass player dancing on stage to their song Hot Toast. All-round superb quality [...]

I'm glad to see yesterday's post is stirring some discussion in the comments section. It's been a while since one of my "Top Ten" lists actually caused readers to feel one way (or another!). I guess I'm just happy that readers feel anything at all when they visit this page. Oh God, I'm so pathetic. I hate being an insignificant little blogger! Fuck! • Here's a sobering article from TIME Magazine called "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin." Lucky for me I hiked Runyon Canyon this morning and came home to this article. Now I feel [...]

This is your last chance to get some free culture and enjoy Shakespeare under the stars on the Boston Common. I haven't managed to make it, maybe this weekend? The Starlight Mints and Wye Oak at the Middle East on Thursday looks like a great show, thinking about that one. On Friday there are way too many choices of rock with the ultimate rockers Rock Bottom at Johnny D's, Angeline at the Plough and Six Finger Satellite at TTs. On Saturday, I'm betting their will be many people at Harpers Ferry in Allston to see The Radiators (and pretend they're [...]

Women / photo by David Greenwald Apologies for the tardiness, folks, but with some distance from the - let's just go ahead and say it - shitty trends that characterized 2008, I feel pretty good about the year. It didn't offer a lot of new classics to my ears, but it was a fantastic time for indie-folk (excluding Bon Iver: Shitty!) and new artists, or at least those who were fresh to me - I became a Hold Steady and Mountain Goats convert, and the debuts of Fleet Foxes, Women and White Hinterland, among others, have [...]

Photography by Amanda Olbrys What an amazingly beautiful evening last night. I had one of the best 20 mile rides home last night I can remember since winter began, just beautiful, cool, damp, and "pre-cold front" and the cycling gods were in my favour after the punishment brought on Sunday when (on a gloriously sunny morning) I went for a ride without my due diligence and suffered on the hills, suffered through two flats (one for me and one for my friend), and suffered through a screaming left thigh (it just wasnt [...]
Considering that Adele was honoured as the "best new artist" of last year, The Grammys lie somewhere between gaffer tape and Chuck Taylors in the "relevance to music" scale. That being said, everyone knows the Grammys aren't a barometer of good music rather a gazillion hour snoozefest peppered with shit jokes, the potential for controversy (thanks Chris Brown) and awesome live collaborations. Here are two of our favourites... MIA (The Grammys strangely coincided with the exact date she was due to give birth) who was joined by a swag of hip-hop A-listers to perform "Swagger Like Us" offered [...]

Yo Zushi is a modern day troubadour armed with his six-string and a heart full of great songs. Proper Songs caught up with him to find out about his new album and musical milkmen. PS: Tell everyone a bit about yourself. I'm a good cook. I do a mean sea bass. I usually poach it, though, so spell my name right: Yo Zushi with a Z. My parents gave me that name. I don't have anything to do with raw fish or conveyor belts, unless I'm eating sushi while trying to catch [...]
