It's never easy to map out an entire decade in music. So, in constructing the "Decade in Music" interactive timeline , we sought to shape it with some of the bigger tent-pole trends, news (Elton John performing with Eminem) and groundbreaking changes in the industry, business and technology (Napster, the iPod). We also wanted to highlight albums (Britney Spears, Danger Mouse, Radiohead) that took a snapshot of the era, as well as deaths (Ray Charles, Johnny Cash) that affected everyone. And, of course, we wanted to include the occasional "wardrobe malfunction" controversy or bizarre curiosity ("Trapped in the Closet") [...]

Hooray! We are now happy to anounce a killer show we will be helping out with at Mohawk in December. One of our favorite bands of last year ( #1 to be exact ) Dutchess & The Duke are returning to Austin on December 12th and we couldn't be more excited. They will be joined on the stage by two other buzz bands: Oakland's own Greg Ashley and Denton, TX boys Fergus & Geronimo . The last time D&D were in Austin they played as an acoustic duo , but word has [...]

Making the best of this bummer called life. IMAGE: OK PONY [RAINY DAY] If the tone of Portland noise-folk trio Meth Teeth's debut full-length, Everything Went Wrong, seems a tad pessimistic, there are good reasons for that. For starters, the album's recording process nearly destroyed the band. It took three full tries to get it done, after the first two were interrupted by everything from members quitting to malfunctioning equipment. If the third attempt had failed, the group was ready to just scrap the whole thing. [...]

Ray Davies Appears at the Orpheum on Saturday Night I didn't get up to as much as I'd hoped last week, but did catch Julian Casablancas and the Happy Hollows at Spaceland. Casablancas didn't do anything to win me back, but most of the crowd seemed really into it. I'll definitely be at Ray Davies this Saturday and I'll most likely check out more of the Happy Hollows tonight. Monday 11/9/09 [Pick of the Night] [...]

Greg Ashley is packing his warm clothes for a jag across America with the Dutchess & The Duke , who are supporting their Ashley produced, highly praised , and recently released LP: 'Sunset / Sunrise.' Greg will be opening the show, and playing drums for D&D. What other prolific analog cavemen reminds us, "Do a full length album at my studio, only $1200." on his MySpace ? This tour will be the now scene, and where it is happening. Tap in. Dig [...]

In describing The Dutchess and The Duke, a Seattle-based duo of Jesse Lortz and Kimberly Morrison, my descriptions always begins with "you could add some of their tunes on a '60's mix of Newport performances and nobody would blink an eye." But while their sound might be rooted in 60's folk and early Stones albums, the band expands into new territory to create their own sound. I really enjoyed their debut, She's The Dutchess, He's The Duke , but wondered how they could follow up without having it sound the same. Jesse Lortz had this to say: [...]

2009 was a year where the sound of Gareth Emery continued to explode in popularity, thanks to a packed DJ diary and the launch of his new record label and club night Garuda, responsible for numerous chart-topping releases and sold out superclubs. Now he's rounding off the year with his new compilation, a 2xCD mix album, which as the title suggests, is all about the sound of Garuda. CD1, entitled '2010', is all about the future, an exquisite showcase of records you can expect to be big next year. Packed full of exclusive unreleased [...]

Living This Life [mp3] Hands [mp3] Today's the day. Sunset/Sunrise is out in the open. I already loved what I'd heard in the first song from the record, Hands - the simplicity, the feeling of being down in Laredo in the 1970's, the rusty organ whirl, the strong, bare electric guitar. So when I got The Dutchess and The Duke's new sophomore album, Sunset/Sunrise , neatly packaged [...]
![The Dutchess And The Duke: Sunset / Sunrise [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2032468_lg.jpg)
In their somewhat self-titled debut, She's The Dutchess, He's The Duke , The Dutchess And The Duke popularized their lo-fi psychedelic folk with epic tracks like "Reservoir Park" and "I Am Just A Ghost". With romantically-tinged dual male/female vocals, the duo of Jesse Lortz and Kimberly Morrison reverted to a sound that hinted at another time, one strife with protest and objection to the powers that were, at the time, seen as opposed to the greater good. In that, The Dutchess And The Duke were debuting at a very similar time mentally, and while their sophomore [...]

The Mantles - "Don't Lie" Back from their first US tour, The Mantles celebrate the release of their self-titled full length (out now on Siltbreeze ) at the Eagle on Thursday (8pm, $tba). The album was recorded by Greg Ashley and you can stream a bunch of their jangle/psych-rock/pop songs on MySpace . Read more in a great article over at the Guardian. Grass Widow and Yellow Fever (Austin) support at the release show.
Taking a few pages out of the mid-80's jangle pop underground. pre-grunge Midwestern ruckus and the Flying Nun-era New Zeeland crew, The Mantles are one more reason San Francisco's staying vital. Eschewing a some of their contemporaries leans towards lo-fi fuzz in favor of a trebly ring of strings and faded Kodachrome production courtesy of Greg Ashley, the band stomps, swings and shuffles aloofly smoking cigarettes in the corner booth. They might not be treading the most original of waters but they seem to have found just the right balance of past lives to inhabit on their Siltbreeze debut. [...]
