Come one come all to the magnificent and frightening Voodoo Experience 2009 Halloween spooktacular held deep in the swampy bayous of New Orleans at City Park! From outrageous costumes to glowing praying mantises, this year's Halloween celebration drew in an outrageous number of people to catch some of this year's hottest acts. Fans braved the freezing rain, which hailed all throughout the first day, and even withstood the muddy after effects on Saturday and Sunday. And all but one small setback (K'NANN canceled his performance last minute on Saturday) made this an exciting and fun filled weekend [...]

Gr eets. Just three records this time, and a lot of back-fill. One of the records is on an archived previous post. So, you'll have to hit the link back to it to hear the audio and read the other Bo connection to it that I did not get into this time. I plan to cut off my detailed retrospective on the late Mr. Bocage's early career at 1966 or so. Other than the one Seven B issue this time, I won't be getting into that label or what lies beyond in the near future. [...]
With today's Top 5 I am starting the ATH Book Club. This is a list of the best books about music I've ever read. Mine are all biographies, but any old book about music can qualify. Obviously I haven't read everything out there, so if I missed something important let me know. I'm always up for a good book recommendation, and I hope I have a few on my list that you might want to check out. So without further ado, follow the jump for my Top 5 music books. [...]
Another year of (mostly) daily tunes here at Doklands, and I have to say I'm still having fun with this. I considered winding this up after hitting 1,000 tracks because really, how much is there left to say? Glad I didn't, though. Nik Bärtsch's Ronin - Modul 38-17 Miriam Makeba - Jol'inkomo Bishop Allen - Psycho Killer Oysterband - Road To Nowhere MGMT - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) Geoffrey Oryema - Listening Wind The Staple Singers - Life During Wartime The Staple Singers - Slippery [...]

It's a late harvest for releases, with acres of goodness dropping on us like over-ripe apples. Top of the list for me are the veterans, Mission of Burma, Built to Spill, Robert Pollard's Boston Spaceships and The Mountain Goats. Beyond that, there's also new releases from Lou Barlow, Califone, The Xx, Port O'Brien, Raveonettes, Daniel Johnston, Noah and the Whale, Brandi Carlile, No Age, The Duchess & the Duke, Alela Diane, Grant Hart, Jamie T, The Cinematics, Kurt Vile, a live album from Gogol Bordello and a slew of reissues from The Jesus Lizard, Betty Davis and Kraftwerk. [...]

This week is a real doozy- the biggest week I can think of in recent memory. Even if you just picked up a fraction of the great new stuff this week, you'd be going home with an armload. There are major releases by big names like Built to Spill, Califone, Jesus Lizard, Mission of Burma, and the Mountain Goats, and lots of highly-anticipated stuff from rising acts like The Big Pink, The Xx, Kurt Vile, Toro Y Moi, and Washed Out. And then on top of that, TONS MORE. Behold: [...]
And so we've reached the last three months of the calendar year, known in the world of music as the Fourth Quarter. It's the last chance for bands and labels to make an impression, pocket a bit of cash, and maybe, just maybe, earn a sport on those illustrious year-end lists. As usually the case with these types of things, we got a lot of music to look forward to... with a heavy emphasis on "a lot." Fortunately, as it's usually the case with these types of things, we got you covered. Below, you'll find an extensive and [...]
day 1 by pelly - day 2 & 3 by eliza (photography by marc evan) All Points West is the best thing to happen in Jersey City, well, ever. With a solid lineup (most notably on Friday) and acts appealing to a range of demographics, Day 1 drew a surprisingly small crowd. I know New Yorkers and Jersey folk aren't the most enthusiastic about festies , but damn, if it keeps up this way, APW will be a short lived social experiment. The event [...]

Hoo Boy! Day two and all was well! Overcast skies hovered above the festival grounds Sunday morning but of course did not deter the thousands of music goers from flooding in to gorge themselves on the music set aside for July 19th. The Wailers helped lay the foundation for day two with and early set in the Rhapsody tent. [...]

EUGENE Ya know the old story about "Hitchhiker Joe," the one where you pick up the crusty old vagabond out of the goodness of your heart and he carves out your eyeballs and steals your wallet (and heart)? Well...the times, they have a-changed, and "Hitchhiker Joe" is now "Hitchhiker Travis," and instead of slicin' up your eyeballs and stealing your money, he continuously begs you to smoke pot with him and listen to his collection of Sublime tapes. Cuz, ya know, they're the rare b-sides , man. Somewhere along the I-5, we [...]

Scott Avett [photo by Hollie] [ I saw my first Avett Brothers show over five years ago. I've been a huge fan ever since. In that five year span, I've seen nearly 20 Avett shows, written reviews for four of their albums, spun their records countless times on radio, and have turned a whole host of friends onto the band's music. One of those friends is my friend Hollie, who just may be one of the biggest fan of the Avetts I [...]
Sixty-five is a number that might well suffer from self-esteem issues. As the U.S. speed limit and the age at which you join the ranks of the elderly, 65 comes off as a scold, a cut-off point—in short, nothing much to celebrate. Country great Merle Haggard addressed this on the recent "Come On, Sixty-Five," a musical wish to hasten the arrival of his 65th birthday so he can get his gold watch, kick back, and perhaps enjoy some warm evenings sipping Bourbon and branch on his porch (after pawning that watch). The song is summed up in the line, "I've [...]

Coming up this Memorial Day weekend is the 2009 Sasquatch! Music Festival , held at The Gorge up in Washington. I've got a few friends heading up for the event but I won't be able to make it there first-hand, yet again. I opted to save myself for Phish a bit, but for the folks that are heading up to the festival this weekend, you're in for a serious entertainment treat. With some top-tier music acts headlining the festival, some amazing smaller-stage stuff like Battles and Rogue Wave, and a set of comedians bound to make [...]
The fifth season of House, M.D concludes with Dr. Gregory House (the always extraordinary Hugh Laurie in a heartbreaking performance) watching his world come crashing down around him -- his sense of reality shattered, unable to distinguish fantasy from reality. It was a somber way to end the season, the camera pulling back to reveal the lone figure of Wilson, watching sadly from afar as House enters the doors of Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital. House co-executive producer and the finale's writer Doris Egan explained the significance of the final sequence during a one-on-one [...]
