I'm a Hank Williams fan.... who isn't?? I may not have mentioned anything about the crooner here before, but for any fan of country music, it kinda goes without saying. I've also never tried to amass any kind of complete recordings collection of Hank's - I grab a track when I come across one and buy a random CD when I find it. So for that reason, I'm not afraid to admit I first heard today's One-Hitter when it was featured as the theme song for a short-run HBO animated series. [...]
I've been daydreaming about a new video feature for a long time and with all of the solid local music I planned to see this weekend I figured now would be as good a time as any to start. Beginning today I'll be posting video footage of the adventures one has when attending local music in Madison. Let's begin: I had a pretty good weekend when it comes to local music shows. On Friday night I went to the Hank III and Assjack concert with friends and fellow bandmates, Vern and Adam. Hank III breaks his show up [...]

Friday If original string band material is your thing, Pert' Near Sandstone is playing at the High Noon starting at 9:30 p.m. with Henhouse Prowlers opening. You know where I'll be? Checking out Hank Williams III and Assjack at The Barrymore Theatre tonight. It's apparently sold out. My friend Reem LOVES the Chicago band, The Bitter Sweets. This is what she had to say about them: These guys are so hilarious, and the music is pretty fantastic as well. There's usually a trombone and sometimes [...]

Photography by Herky It's Friday but it's a gloomy, cloudy, and busy one, meaning the sooner we get this day done and start our weekend, the better! Personally, I can't think of a better way to finish off this week than with the shot of throat burnin' bourbon in an old motel that is Whodat Peckerhead's, from our Facebook community , new mixtape ! YAY! It's a wonderful [...]

alrighty, lets see if can get through this without resorting to the bog-standard hootin' an' a hollerin' hard drinkin' foot-stompin' old fashioned yee-haw hoedown clichés or yawning on about dusty western vistas that writerly types resort to when spunking out words on this kindof thing. i'm using every last 'g' motherlovers and i don't give a flying fucking fiddlestick who knows it. yes indeedy, jack's back with the appalachian crazy horse in tow again. i like what they do to him, in the same way crazy horse up mr neil young's game. but this ain't no backing band. [...]
I love country music. I love it for a million reasons (one of them being that, even today, it exists in a world completely without irony). Unfortunately, as you follow the history of country from the divine Hank Williams Sr. to the joyously irritating Hank Williams Jr. to the awful Hank Williams III , the grain of salt you have to take it all with gets so big that your tongue goes numb. That said, I've recently been listening to Portland's 99.5 ( The Wolf !) when I'm driving around and enjoyed the [...]

Roger Miller being a badass surrounded by A shit ton of Grammys! As the weather turns cold the need to be near someone begins to grow. Especially if you are wo/manless. People find cures for this in different ways. Drinking, drugging, and artistic outlets. Maybe all of the above. Nothing speaks to a lonely heart more than country music. Country often deals with, drinking, drugging and writing a song for your exlover. Simplicity is key in conveying loneliness. Directness in lyric, in tone, and voice. A lot of the songs sound the same. That's [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
Hank Williams III is playing Nashville. Not once, but twice. The first appearance is slated for Oct. 10 and will be an acoustic and civil affair for the well-behaved over at the Country Music H... Continue reading "Nashville to Get All Sides of Hank III" >

A little over a week ago my partner on the blog posted an item about the great music he's heard on a TV show . That's great, I told him, but he happens to be misguided - very little good music has ever come from television. "Hawaii Five O" by the Ventures, the "Twilight Zone" theme and possibly Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn" notwithstanding, TV theme songs just don't cut it most of the time. We can maybe argue over that one for hours in a bar somewhere. But I am certain of one [...]

Holy Fuck. There. Review done. What? Five words is too short for you? You need more? Okay, but be warned, I feel as though everything from here to the end is, in my opinion, unnecessary. Assjack is the metal alter-ego of Shelton Hank Williams , or perhaps Hank III is the country alter-ego of Shelton. Really, as any Hank Williams III concert vet can attest, Hank does both with such fluidity it's hard to tell where his heart really lies. To quote the Drive-By Truckers , "such is the duality [...]
"Six Pack of Beer" does its best to express the enthusiasm and rowdy lifestyle the the musician and his band have come to be known for.

Boasting a resume that features members of Pantera more prominently than any Nashville session players, multi-instrumentalist Hank Williams III has defiantly cultivated a career and an image in stark contrast to the country roots evoked by his iconic namesake. Though hardly abandoning his heritage, the grandson of the honky tonk pioneer continues to mystify [...]
