Hayseed Dixie is a novelty band that issued a tribute album to heavy metal legends AC/DC in 2001 (completely reworking the Australian band's classics as country/hillbilly rave-ups), titled A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC. Their sense of humor is also evident in their bio, which claims that the band hails from Deer Lick Holler, "deep in the heart of the Appalachia," where its members grew up playing
Decembers in pop culture land are always filled with a glut of year-end lists, but this year is even crazier with everyone tossing out decade-end lists left and right. I didn't want this to get out of hand, so I've really narrowed the scope to just a flat-out list of my personal favourite cover songs of the decade and THE absolute worst film of the decade. Attempting to rank these would be an exercise in futility, so this is purely based on iTunes playcounts. I have 6000+ covers tagged as being in the 00's, but of [...]

I've closed the voting for the Coverville Countdown 2009, and I'm tabulating the results right now. Some old favorites on the list, as well as some new independent stuff that I'm really happy to see made the grade. Starting tomorrow, we'll countdown the top 40 on the last four shows of the decade! And as promised, following the break, see the entire list of nominees: Here is the full list of nominees (minus the songs inducted into the Coverville Hall Of Fame ) '19992 - Red Dirt Rangers [orig. das jahr 2005 kann man wohl als höhepunkt meines studentendaseins bezeichnen - ich machte meine zwischenprüfung und fing im herbst an, beim münchner studentenradio m94.5 mitzuarbeiten. zwischendrin reiste ich durch halb europa, nur um ein konzert einer meiner lieblingsbands zu sehen... die unterscheidung zwischen den damaligen und den lieblingsplatten aus heutiger sicht wird zunehmend schwieriger, weil sich mein musikgeschmack in den letzten fünf jahren nicht wirklich relevant geändert hat. deshalb werde ich die jeweils korrespondierenden kategorien ab jetzt zusammenfassen. meine alben des jahres [...]

Canadian trio The Lost Fingers named themselves after Django Reinhardt (who lost two fingers in a fire), and play his trademark manouche-style, or gypsy-jazz. But instead of composing their own songs, they do covers. Of 80s classics, like Pump Up the Jam . Or, on their new album, French(-ish) popgold like Lady Marmelade and the Je t'aime... moi non plus of the punk generation, Ça plane pour moi. It's an acquired taste (along the lines of Global Kryner , Hayseed Dixie and La Pompe Moderne ), but with the right amount of alcohol [...]
Technically, the archive hosts the biggest collection of covers, but they've got all those original tunes in there, too. I cut through the bullshit and give you the goods. One cover from several of my favorite bands with collections in the archive. Dig it. When the Levee Breaks (Led Zep)-John Popper (of Blues Traveller) Somewhere Over the Rainbow-Jefferson Starship Never Tear Us Apart (INXS)-John Mayer Gimme Some Lovin' (Spencer Davis Group)-G Love and Special Sauce [...]

Gig Of The Week - Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Mew - O2 Arena Although ordinarily I would never recommend a gig at the corporate cowshed, this little soiree should be one of the gigs of the year for those who attend. Not only is it probably the last chance to catch Trent Reznor for quite some time, earlier this year he claimed that NiN were done with touring for the foreseeable future, but also see the iconic Jane's Addiction and the excellent Mew. Elsewhere in town we have the Summer Series at Somerset [...]

A Typical AC/DC Fan AC/DC play the penultimate leg of the European part of their Black Ice tour tomorrow at Punchestown racecourse in Co Kildare. They've put on nearly fifty shows all over Europe since last February. Yesterday, they played Wembley stadium and their Hampden Park gig on Tuesday will be their final one for a month. Then, they hit off to North America from late July to early September where they'll play eighteen dates, most of which have been sold out already. They finish the tour down under at the [...]

I've always had a low tolerance for alcohol. In college, I could get three good nights off a six-pack. Today, even a single beer with supper gives me quite the buzz. Low tolerance means I don't drink much; after all, though I love a good microbrew IPA as much as the next guy, he can usually drive home afterwards, and I can't. But yesterday was a tough day. By the time I got home, it was time for a drink or three. I [...]

Today is the high holiday for stoners, so LWMB asked former High Times editor Steve Bloom , who currently helms Celebstoner.com , to pack a few smokin' 4/20 playlists. Bloom came through with four great lists full of stone-y joints such as Bob Marley's "Kaya," The Pharcyde's "Pass the Pipe" and Kottonmouth Kings' "Marijuana." So kick back, relax and crank up one of these playlists— at 4:20pm, if at all possible. 4 Celebstoner Playlists Playlist #1 1. Bob Marley – "Kaya" [...]
Last night I was messing around, looking at different blogs and I came across this little gem. It's Hayseed Dixie's version of the Metallica classic "Enter Sandman." If you're not familiar with the Hayseed Dixie they are a Hillbilly cover band that hails from Dear Lick Holler, Appalachia (not a real place). They're known mostly for doing Bluegrass cover versions of AC/DC, KISS and other classic rockers. MP3: Hayseed Dixie - Enter Sandman

In 1970, Black Sabbath created what I consider to be the ultimate anti-war song. p Far from a whiny, folksy, gently phrased call to resistance, " War Pigs " is an electric nightmare, heavily drenched in gloom, placing war in its deserved, real-life horror context, and re-casting our generals (and by extension, our statesmen) as "sorcerer(s) of death's construction ." The song is a perennial rock anthem, and its riff-vocal-riff-vocal call/response pattern in the verses must be familiar to almost everyone in the world. [...]
