For being one of my favorite bands, I really don't post deftones stuff that much. Part of the reason is that they don't release new material that often, and the other part sadly is that bassist Chi Cheng has been in a coma for about a year now after being in a bad car accident. Apparently he is out of serious condition though and has been able to walk around, but that is not confirmed. After releasing several amazing nu-metal albums in the '90s and 2000's (and facing a near break-up in 2005), the deftones veered towards a [...]

E very genre of music has an ideal listening environment. Classical is best heard at a smyphony. Arena rock should be heard at, well, at a large arena. Electronic music? Nothing beats a dance party. But whether you're a club person, a bar junkie or a house party lover, you've probably encountered a lot of obnoxious people during your nights out. Below are nine of the people we hate most in no particular order. Got any good ideas for future lists you'd like to see? Send them over . [...]

Back in 1997 Anthony Lovett and Matt Maranian wrote and published what eventually became my favorite Los Angeles guidebook. That book's name was (and is) LA Bizarro . A few years ago on this website I talked to Matt about the original book's undertaking ( fun interview with Matt here ). Since that time the two authors have now revised, updated and significantly expanded that original tome, and their collective output was published by Chronicle Books just this fall. In the 2009 updated edition of LA Bizarro (available at the time of this [...]

Zinc has been storming the dirty bass electro scene of late with an impressive run of floor filling bangers which have now been compiled into his recently released Crack House EP , and to further cement his rapid ascent in his new chosen genre he has banged out a massive 64 track Essential Mix. DJ Zinc - Essential Mix Tracklist 1. Geeneus ft Ms Dynamite – Get Low (CDR) 2. Zinc – Nu Sound (Bingo Bass) 3 Acid [...]
We made another trip down to Bloomington for yet another great show last night, this time A.A. Bondy and Elvis Perkins In Dearland at the Video Saloon . Bloomington is now 4 for 4. Good work everyone! Keep it up! Bondy was relaxed and playful, cracking wry jokes between songs and laughing at the screaming co-eds running around outside the venue (oh college). He weaved his songs into a dense atmosphere, letting each song fade in and out and hang in the air as his band made their way through the short set. [...]

Guess this is the sort of stuff you will find under the tree this Christmas - if you have been bad. I'd rather have a gift card, you know? Anyway - here are some new efforts from Big Superstars who are still trying to get your hard-earned money this holiday season, although you need it way more than they do. Norah Jones has sold a zillion albums but she has really put out only four, and The Fall is certainly her liveliest album to date. She's kinda wanting to [...]

Photography "Mojo Rising" by jonmmmayhem To see the photo Mojo shot from atop the couch, go here (Not100%SFW) Well, what do you know.... it's Friday. Huh. Go figure. Whacha doin' this weekend? Me? Besides riding my bicycle on my quest to make to 6,000 miles before the end of the year -- I'm just over 5,000 miles, and with just under 6 weeks left, that means I need to do over 170 miles a week! Oh man... [...]

Having my blog has introduced me to tons of bands. Sometimes if I am lucky enough, I have been able to become friends with members of bands. It is like a dream come true to chat it out with real artists!! One band that I have stayed in close contact with is Local Natives . I have been addicted to their beautiful tunes every since I received my first email about them. It's all history since then! I couldn't just be there friend though; it was time to do some professional blogging! Matt Frazier, the drummer of [...]

Channeling Fleetwood Mac's musical stylings with a hint of late-era Beatles, Family of the Year braid catchy melodies, stellar male/female vocals and personal folk tales to create some of the happiest and saddest music you've ever heard. Opening up with "Feel Good Track Of Rosemead" it's a delicate harmony and rock guitar combo, very much like The New Pornographers, or The Polyphonic Spree. Actually, it's singers Joe Keefe (formerly of The Billionaires) and Vanessa Long who harmonize and get lots of milage out of their pop chemistry and aural dynamics. Fans of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds who hear the [...]
Hey, Townspeople! Last night the G-friend and I curled up on the sofa to watch a movie and wolf down some primo home-cooked chow. She was in the mood for something highbrow, but I was curious about a flick I'd had in the "not sure about this movie" drawer for a couple of weeks. Because she's such a sweetheart, she let me watch my movie of choice, even though it gave off the distinct limburger pong of idiocy. The movie in question? Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story . [...]

It's 11:30pm, and Maluca has just finished her set at The Fader's One Step Beyond Party at the Natural History Museum. If you think there would be any signs that the New York native was tired after a dynamic set, you'd be sorely mistaken. Known for her uniquely fast musical delivery, the Bronx cumbia songstress is a ball of energy, talking quickly about everything from jobs cutting limes to where her music is headed. With a nod on the recent URB: 25 NOW! Artists to [...]
-Hey, subeditor -Yes, Mr Gordon, sir? -I'm appearing on the television talking about how great Sun headlines are right now. It's a little awkward... -...oh, I wouldn't say that, Mr Gordon, sir. A little stiff, perhaps, but not awkward -I meant my request was about to be awkward, not my performance -Oh. Really? Oh. -Anyway, I want my column to live up to my claims in the advert. So can we come up with some clever headlines this week -Well, we can try. Unless the stories are so pointless as to smother any inventiveness. What have you got for me? [...]

Skye Mind How You Go (Atlantic) Price: RM9.90 My mom always told me I should never judge a book by its cover, which is strange because I never read. See, I spent most of my developing years trying to speak Romulan to my dog (she just about had it, just needed that additional slur on the tongue). Anyways, about 20 years later, I understood what she meant. So while I would like to take momma's advice, the CD above did make it difficult. Yes, I have taken mom's advice, as such these days, I [...]

Words: Jodi Root | Photo: Clayton Huack Maps and Atlases served as the perfect bait to lure me to my most (and quite frankly, only) anticipated field trip into Chicago's Lincoln Park – the city's newest venue, Lincoln Hall . While Maps & Atlases put on an incredible, entertaining set– thanks to Muzzle of Bees contributing Champaign writer Jon Stone, we already knew that . Instead of repeating his previous praise, I'd like instead to focus on the highlights (and there are many) [...]
Terwijl Duran Duran nog optrad in vieze stripclubs, lag Marc Bolan dood te gaan in zijn verongelukte Mini Cooper. Zeer spijtig, want de man was geniaal.
From 1976, please enjoy the incomparable Patti Smith , my unrequited hearthrob for the last several decades, and a pretty fabulous live version (from Brit TV) of the classic title track from her debut album Horses . Eventually mutating into "Hey Joe." As always, a Coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded the first reader who gleans the clip's relevance to the theme of tomorrow's Weekend Listomania. BTW, a chum forwarded this yearbook photo -- Deptford Township High School class of '64 -- the other day. [...]

via erik baar Chicago's own Prairie Cartel released a new album a few weeks ago, Where Did All My People Go . Last featured back when the Hey Champ remix of "Cracktown" a while back, the 'Cartel carry a grungy, digitized dance-rock vibe well. Here's a Bright Lights remix of "No Light." The Prairie Cartel - No Light (Bright Lights Remix) I can't stop playing this Extrawelt jam. Sure it's been out for a while, released as a single on Border [...]
