Tonight sees the Le Galaxie boys headline Whelan's after the match so let's hope it's a celebration rather than a damp desolate heart-crushingly ball-numbing result we'd rather forget. Either way, Le Galaxie will be bringing their own 'Victory' and joining them from 10.30pm tonight will be The Ambience Affair and Neosupervital so it's a great show all round. Intergalactic , the weekly dance/indie night happens afterwards too. Admission is €10. Le Galaxie have recently recorded a new single called 'Victory' and were kind enough to allow us to host it right [...]
Sufjan Stevens is nothing if not ambitious. He's a top-notch songwriter and instrumentalist, but he doesn't rest on his laurels. Instead, he tackles big projects. Although he's recently rescinded on his promise to make an album for each state , he did make two state-centric albums that were heavy on local details and took plenty of research. And they turned out to be pretty amazing records. Perhaps tired of tackling so much geography, he decided to dedicate a multimedia project to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, a 12.7-mile roadway connecting both of its namesake boroughs. In 2007 he [...]

My buddy Mike is working in the music industry for Sonicbids . As such, he gets hooked up with all kinds of free shwag, including a badge to this year's CMJ Music Marathon, or whatever they're calling it now; he was gracious enough to write up a fantastic recap for us (and Sonicbids ). Mike's an all around mensch who knows the ins and outs of the business and has been putting me on to new music since our high school days. Hopefully we'll be [...]

Hidden away from the world for the past few months writing their second album, Ham Sandwich have briefly reappeared to launch new single 'Out Of The Darkness' and reacquaint themselves with their live audience at their home from home. Marking their return with the now customary falling giant balloon and confetti shower, the first of their selection of new numbers 'White Fox' saw them joined by violinist Sarah and the appearance of Podge in pink and black striped shirt and matching shiny pants. Oh how we've missed them. There's a lot of unfamiliar material on show [...]
Well, it's Friday and you know what that means. Yes, my Oriental Fah Lo Suee and I will be.... In any case, posting by moi will more than likely be sporadic for a little while. But in the meantime, here's another little fun project for us all: Most Memorable Post-Elvis Pop or Rock Song About Getting Away From It All Songs about travel, in other words, or more specifically the specific faraway places [...]
All Hallows Eve, or Hallowe'en as it came to be known, marks the beginning of the Christian holiday All Saints Day. But what they don't tell you in grade school is that the celebration is rooted in the Pagan tradition of honoring the dead. The ancient Celts believed the barrier between this world and the spirit world grew thin at summer's end, allowing souls (both good and bad) to walk amongst the living. The modern interpretation of Halloween is characterized by a breakdown in the barrier between our innermost desires and demons, and external displays of [...]
Land Lovers - Immovable Feet Immovable Feet is the second release from Land Lovers, the brainchild of Padraig Cooney. Wordy indie pop is their specialty, and Immoveable Feet is pleasingly refreshing to that end. The eponymous 'Immoveable Feet' and 'Paul Tracey Probably Knows' showcase the inherent wit and ear for a cutesy melody that Land Lovers possess, at times echoing Belle & Sebastian and Brendan Benson in equal parts. At times it's all a bit overly-twee, but be safe in the knowledge that they obviously know their way [...]

The Brunettes- Paper Dolls 8 /10 There's always an air of innocence and a dash of danger with The Brunettes, and the play off between Heather and Jonathan remains a powerful, playful force on Paper Dolls . The album's biggest point of difference is its modern bent. Instantly more avant-guarde and experimental than previous more straight forward twee pop efforts, the band's seventh release grabs effortlessly with opener 'In Colours'. Its climbing bassline and sunny melodies seep into single 'Red Rollerskates' with ease, in which there's a pitter [...]

Phish is more than just a band; it is a way of life, a worldview that transcends jamming guitars and drums. Experiencing the live performance stirs up waves of emotion that make you move and dance with a freedom that can only be described by simply saying, "I was at a Phish show, man." And man, Phish's Festival 8 proves that the Phish way of life is stronger and more vibrant than ever. The three-day festival kicked off in high gear with "Party Time," and sustained the energy with "Chalk Dust [...]

Alan Palomo goes by some pretty rad alias' whether it be Ghosthustler, VEGA or Neon Indian. Now we've gabbed a fair deal on Neon Indian along with everyone and their aunt (and even Charlie Gibson ), so we're psyched to be giving away tickets to catch the live show on November 20 at the Echoplex in Los Angeles. Want a pair? Shoot an email to noah@thefmly.com with something you'd like to see in neon (tombstones, shoes, hula hoops, etc)! Neon Indian - Deadbeat Summer The Silent League - Here's [...]
My most recent guest dj appearance on Greg "Spacebrother" Bishop's weekly examination of the bizarre is now up. Much thanks to Radio Misterioso for not only having me up, but engineering my often dodgy-quality recordings. "Notable tracks played included a reggae song about Apollo 11, four or five old UFO drop-in songs (think "The Flying Saucer" by Buchanan and Goodman), sounds from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, elephants playing xyolphones and theremins, a mashup of the Muppets and the Stray Cats, Sad Kermit , and music from L. Ron Hubbard." [...]

I have had a problem with Sufjan Stevens music over the past few years. I quite liked Michigan and I loved Seven Swans , but I began to lose interest shortly after. It is not that I thought what he was doing was bad, it's just that what he was doing failed to click with me and my interests waned. Well, now my interest has been rekindled by a chance listen to his new record The BQE. The BQE, described in the label blurb as "a cinematic suite inspired by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the [...]

The whimsical career path that the increasingly enigmatic singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens has embarked upon takes another unconventional twist with the release of his mixed-media tribute to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, a move that will turn heads and raise suspicion in equal measure. Commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music in late 2007, the project began as a series of live performances complete with a 36-strong orchestra, a throng of female hula dancers, and Super 8 footage that Stevens filmed and directed himself. Despite this well-received string of sold-out performances, it has taken almost two years for an official CD release of [...]

The title of The BQE , Sufjan Stevens' ambitious new multimedia project, stands for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, a poorly planned knot of a roadway built in the 1950s. Stevens' visual and musical rendering imagines the structure as the triumphant feat of human ingenuity it was intended as. The BQE is, for one, an orchestral suite, commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music and adapted from a 2007 performance at the Howard Gilman Opera House. Now it's also the soundtrack to Stevens' homemade film of the same name. Of course, the package includes [...]

Filed under: News The worlds of music and transport have a rich history of collaboration. From 'Route 66' to Brian Eno 's 'Music for Airports,' the calm hum of Kraftwerk 's ode to rail 'Europe Endless' to Gary Numan 's auto-fixation 'Cars,' the ways in which we get from A to B have long inspired music makers. You can add Sufjan Stevens to that list now. The chronicler of American states and occasional Yuletide cheerleader's latest opus 'The BQE' is a multi-media project fixating on 12 [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. I'll refrain from any sexual double entendres involving out First Lady, but I will say in all sincerity that she's quite the hula hooper. And this is coming from a former three-time Myrtle Beach Hula Hoop Champion ('94-'96). I want to be adopted by the Obamas. Just throwin' that out there. [ via ]
