buon giorno luamada : buon giorno luamada - more blissful blossoming lotuses of lovely dream noise from perdizes dream , brazils answer to not not fun. if yr familiar with babe, terror's warm analogue burblings then yr on safe ground here. does that sleepy dusk/dawn sensation home-taping thing that the likesof ducktails and their various bastard children do. y'know hazy backround fizz in a hot bath-full of guitar fuzz and clean strummery. it's hard to imagine all this stuff not coming from some sunny dreamland of cold beer and tropical weather [...]
Breaking Benjamin was one of the few modern rock bands on the radio that, if you have heard any song in its catalog prior, could be immediately recognized. The band's sound is indicative of early '00s modern rock, while also now and then being more Filter-esque or technically proficient, primarily on guitar during 2002's Saturate, and from then on with bass and drums. As something of a less lyrically skilled Earshot-type outfit, Breaking Benjamin is often labeled as being post-grunge, but this writer feels post-industrial was once more accurate, with such tight rhythms and a lot of [...]
Not since an early teenage flirtation with Dungeons & Dragons has State ever really embraced the role playing genre with anything even approaching gusto, so it's a testament to just how good Dragon Age: Origins is that we've lost sleep, been late for work and even spent time on a bus worrying about which Dwarven faction for the vacant King-ship we should align ourselves with. You play as one of the last Grey Wardens, a legendary line of dark warriors who have traditionally protected the kingdom of Ferelden from the darkspawn, a race of [...]

"I'm supposed to advertise myself, so any questions?" seems to be Wallis Bird's personal calling card for the evening. Most of the queries revolve around Wallis' phone number (087-4, apparently), but she's doing a solid job of advertising herself without the assorted between-song antics, producing a charismatic, bubbly singer-songwriter set that's a touch cheesy yet intriguing and fulfilling at the same time. No doubt Wallis picked up a few fans along the way, but right from the off there's no doubt who the sell-out Olympia crowd are wedged against the barriers for. [...]
Lisa Hannigan is a singer. She oftens hum away without realising it until she gets funny looks on Camden Street. She is both good at roasting potatoes and sewing on buttons, but not good at voice mails and competitive sports. Neither here nor there, but we're more interested in her music, including a set of new recordings. Hannigan has just released a special set of live recordings, Live At Fingerprints , which includes six live tracks done at Fingerprint Records in Long Beach, [...]

Early morning view from my room in Shanghai. 2004. Brilliant year! This blog is born! Back in London! Good year. My favorite song was, without a doubt, Keane's swoony epic, Your Eyes Open , which reminded me of Ultravox and hits like Reap The Wild Wind . This was the return of the romantic male singing voice after years in the growling butch wilderness. My other favorite song was unlikely: Nancy Sinatra's performance of a song Morrissey wrote for [...]
is it just me or does jesu seem more at home here than on hydra head? doth broadrick on these records not have more in common with the fuzzy slo-mo murmurings of mark kozelek and alan sparhawks rockist tendencies? i think so. in fact i'd be so bloody bold (though not really) to say that this shit is just red house painters turned way the fuck up. actually that's a pretty stupid thing to come out with. retraction, your honour. anyhoo. this is the new ep. and all my favourite jesu shit comes out on ep. [...]
![The Family Curse: White Medicine [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2134609_lg.jpg)
The Family Curse ... good god. When people tell me a band is "crazy" I usually chuckle to myself heartily and think about Edward Ka-Spel. That makes me feel better, usually ... But in this case "crazy" is actually a fairly apt descriptor (hear it for yourself; listen to all 6 minutes of "Bodies in Rooms" for free down below). The Family Curse are dollars-to-donuts one of the kookiest combos around, dealing in an unseemly din of death loops, car-crashing crescendos and hyper-banshee shrieks. Roll Karen O [...]

By Jon Stone | @jwstone Over the weekend I saw three shows in Champaign-Urbana. Each show was a good show-great even. But wow, were they different experiences. This disparateness is one of the things that makes thinking and writing about music appealing: parsing through the musical experience looking for clues and connections of their quality with our resulting affinity. My goal here is to review each of these shows but also make a larger argument (that includes some theorizing-sorry: academic alert) about why it is we like the music we do and what [...]

From: New Jersey, US Sounds like: Saves The Day, Taking Back Sunday, Far Website: www.MySpace.com/LastDaysOfEmpi re Thrash Hits verdict: There seems to be an awful lot going on in New Jersey right now - not only did we stumble across the hardcore rock'n'roll of Chambers , but now we can also add the post-hardcore soundscapes of Last Days of Empire to our 2009 discovery-list. We pinned down LDoE vocalist/guitarist, Michael Depho, to fill us in. -- How did you [...]

The Indiecision Decade In Review is our retrospective of the last 10 years in Indian independent music. These are our picks of the best Indian indie songs of the last decade. #25: 'Gutterment' - Pin Drop Violence For a couple of years in the early-'00s Pin Drop Violence was India's flagship metal act. Fresh off their victory at I-Rock 2001, the Mumbai band incited brutal moshpits wherever they went powered by the uber-tight hardcore of [...]

[Photos by Merry Swankster] For what its worth, I'm firmly placed in the camp of believers calling Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca as one of the best albums of the year. There is a magical cohesion from track to track that elevates the album's song collection into something more special as a sum of its parts, even in spite of standout songs. Bitte Orca keeps pulling me back even as I flirt with other tempting releases that hover in my orbit. Last Sunday's show at the Blubird was the first time I've [...]

The Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center started fantasy football - a game that has mostly been the all-male domain of twentysomething office pools and barroom bettors - early this fall, in hopes it would liven up ho-hum Sunday afternoons for its elderly residents. I'm actually thinking about starting a fantasy league where you draft people over the age of 65. Scoring categories include visits to the bathroom, how many times they talk about the accomplishments of their grandchildren, and how many pieces of furniture are covered in plastic. I'm thinking Betty White is [...]

Kinks founder Ray Davies, one of the most underrated rock and rollers around, will visit The Late Show with David Letterman on CBS this Wednesday. Three people. One adventure. Cosmic alignment? Polka Dot Dot Dot , based in Olympia, WA, formed when three travelers (Jordan O'Jordan, Onyx of Olympia, and Colleen Johnson or Twig Palace) met on the treefern-speckled shores of New Zealand. Combining their solo sets for a last-minute spot at the Camp A Low Hum Music Festival, the Dots charmed crowds with their refreshing blend of folk, tin pan alley, and a cappella styles. Their first album, Love Letter to New Zealand reflected this impromptu musical spirit. On their 2nd full-length release, Syzygy (a [...]

I feel good now, on my first night in the cabin. I had a sickly sad feeling of uncertainty wash over me on the long drive down the rocky dirt road tonight, but now, here I feel alright. There was the idea of putting all this off, of working here during the day, of whipping this old cabin into living shape, slaving in the sun, cleaning, bleaching, killing mice, and then shutting it up and driving the long way back into Monterrey to wash my clothes, take a hot shower and sleep in a soft bed. Now, it seems, I've [...]

Knocking our heads for a spin with his straight-out-of-the-desert brand of stoner/doom rock, Oscape made a big impression on the Ripple office when their first EP The Growing Ground fell into our laps. Needless to say, we couldn't wait til we had a chance to chat with Oscape's main man, Scott Heller, and dig deep into his fertile mind. When I was a kid, growing up in a house with Cat Stevens, Neil Diamond, and Simon and Garfunkle, the first time I ever heard Kiss's "Detroit Rock City," it was a moment of musical epiphany. It was [...]

MUCH NEEDED BLOGGING - PROCEED! I've had quite the hectic week. A test, 3 papers, and a presentation all crammed into 120 hours. Alas, I have completed the priorities of the week and have delicious chunes to share with you. Lidell Townsell , "When I saw her walking down the street; she looked so fine, I just had to speak. I AKSED her name..." Apart from the silly pronunciation of the word 'ask', Nu Nu is old school r&b at its finest. It's not r&b that [...]
