When Laura Ann Masura's longtime friend Josiah Mazzaschi heard she had been injured in a motorcycle accident, he didn't sit on his hands. He got on the phone. Mazzaschi, the frontman of local indie-rock band Light FM , has organized a benefit concert, Jam for Laura Ann, on Sunday at the Echoplex to help Masura, a fellow musician and also a bartender at the downtown's Redwood Bar, defray some $15,000 in medical expenses. The 5 p.m. show ($12) features a heady cast of performers, including the Backwards Clock Society, featuring Billy Corgan along with Kerry [...]

By Jeff Kollath This interview will be the first in a series featuring gig poster artists both from the Madison area and throughout this fine country of ours. Our first subject is Marq Spusta , who currently resides in Three Rivers, California. A native of Waunakee and a graduate of UW-Stout with a degree in Art, Marq has been an artist since he was in elementary school, and has become one of the more popular poster artists on the West Coast. Earlier this month, Marq reintroduced himself to Madison audiences with a poster for [...]

Bob Dylan: Live 1966 - The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert Jordy: It has always been difficult for me to listen to the man-and-his-guitar format. Rock, in the end, is how a small group of musicians produces a singular, simultaneous sound. Dylan's acoustic set on the "Royal Albert Hall" Concert is the former yearning to be the latter. Each of the songs he performs in it was originally recorded with an ensemble ("Mr. Tambourine Man" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" are the closest to their original studio releases, lacking only the electric [...]

The NBA Season is still young and TSS is keeping the ball in play. We hit you off with the West , now it's time to bicker about the Eastern Conference Standings. The East is has a top heavy talent pool but it's full of compelling storylines that'll keep you tuned in. The Celtics are back, healthy and ready for another run at the chip. Meanwhile LBJ is still climbing for the mountain top while Orlando knows what it takes to get there. But screw all that serious stuff. Gilbert Arenas is back ladies and gentlemen. Who knows what [...]

Now that I've got a little more time on my hands I think I'm going to start up this " Exchanging e-mails with... " segment again. It's been really interesting getting some insight from different bands/artists and figuring out what their life with music is like: what their goals are, their motivation, what tours are like, etc.. Hopefully it's an interesting read, but, if not, I think it makes me a slightly better (sort of) music blogger... This time around I bounced some electronic mails back and forth with Ottawa singer-songwriter That's the Spirit ( [...]

"Balloon Boy" Falcon Heene's afternoon of transfixing America's underemployed and Internet-equipped people who thought he was in a UFO-esque balloon floating over Colorado-even though he was simply hiding in his house's attic -is almost 24 hours out, and people are currently trying to figure out just whether or not yesterday was a happy accident or some sort of proto-fameball experiment . However, there was definitely some fameballing going on-by YouTube-channel-equipped singers who decided to act as a rapid-response unit of sorts and write songs about Falcon, his family, and the media in hopes of Making A [...]
Another O. Schmitt Moment Seattle Seahawks ' fullback Owen Schmitt has always been known for his brutish ability to deliver/receive the hardest of hits in football. During his college days at West Virginia, this machine of a man mananged to mangle his facemask every few games - those things are really hard to bend! Part of his pre-game ritual sometimes included hitting his head with the very own helmet that's supposed to protect that precious cargo which resides inside that tough head of his. Fast forward to [...]

Leslie and the Badgers recorded their album while Los Angeles was on fire and began their residency at the Echo as the ash finally started to dissipate. Producer David Bianco let them use Bob Dylan's microphone and they meet now for beers at Cole's, where they would have fit perfectly opening for I See Hawks In L.A. not too long ago. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

Photo Credit This is going to be an action packed week in Atlanta. The A3C Hip hop Festival is going on in various venues in and around East Atlanta this weekend, and you can find all the details on that here . I'm not familiar enough with most of the lineup to make educated recommendations as to which shows to hit, but if I were sticking around town this week, I would definitely hit it up. But, I'll be going OTP to attend Alchemy , Georgia's mini version of Burning Man. In addition to [...]

We're back again with the NFL picks and now it's the NFC's turn. Often regarded as the inferior conference, the NFC is still packed with a couple of competitive divisions. Hell, like it or not, Brett Favre's offseason soap opera made the NFC North worth checking for. Take a look at our NFC divisional projections and let the inevitable arguments roll in the comments. NFC North: Jesse H. 1. Minnesota Vikings (11-5) [...]

Hip-hop can be boastful, loud and self-serving, but we shouldn't forget it was music born with an inherent social consciousness. The second annual Hot Nights/Warm Coats show taps into that original spirit. Featuring over 20 regional acts in all—including kingpins like Cool Nutz, Braille and Soul P—HNWC aims to better last year's total of over 600 coats collected for Oregon's needy. While organizers are looking for warm and "gently used" coats, WW decided to ask some of the showcase's performers about the biggest fashion faux pas they ever made. Diezel P (pictured) [...]

If you don't like the blues and ain't too particular about R&B in general, you might as well skip this whole mixtape. Period. End of story. Last week when we dropped Etta singing jazz, I knew we couldn't get away with not including some of her classic R&B material, of which there is, as we say here in the fertile crescent, "beaucoup," meaning a healthy bunch, a whole lot! So the first part of the mixtape is comprised of [...]
