Notes upon listening to Yo Gabba Gabba: Music Is . . . Awesome five times in the past two days: - I had no idea what Yo Gabba Gabba was until the promo copy arrived in my mailbox on Wednesday. My cluelessness is due to the fact that (a) pretty much all my TV viewing nowadays is Hulu -based, (b) I don't have kids, and (c) I don't do drugs. However, after looking at the album cover and doing some quick internet researching - which mainly consisted of this article from Slate [...]

![[MP3] Beck: "Harry Partch"](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2137900_lg.jpg)
You like feuds, right? Because this new Beck song is the baby of the feud of the year and it's pretty messy. The story goes like this: Radiohead wrote a song back in August about Harry Patch, the UK's oldest surviving WWI veteran (aww!). Well The Fiery Furnaces' Matthew Friedberger heard this and mistook it to be a song about apparently trendy 20th century composer Harry Partch . Because this upset him so, Friedberger lambasted Radiohead for being obnoxious and writing about trendy things. When he realized his mistake, he released a statement that read: "Matt would [...]
This being her third album in seven years, you couldn't accuse Kate Walsh of being prolific compared to many of her peers. She has, however, changed her style over time. This release is far more country rock than the jazzier pop of Tim's House , yet it still retains the beautifully constructed vulnerability of both her previous works. The fragile singer songwriter (a la Joni Mitchell) is still present but, if anything, this album builds on it with aspects of alt-country and Gram Parsons, complete with all the inherent self doubt and insecurities. [...]

It's going to be my album of the year, at least based on its placing in my top 5 of all albums released this decade, but I still didn't know for certain every lyric to every song on the album, which was mildly annoying. Sunset Rubdown hadn't included a lyric sheet with the album's release and although I'd waded through the threads on the Wolf Parade forums and on songmeanings.net at various times this year, there were enough discrepancies to throw me off on more than one lyric in more than one [...]
Wavves frontman Nathan Williams hasn't had much better luck than Jay Reatard in holding on to a band. Williams took too many drugs and argued with his drummer onstage ; Jay Reatard pees on people . Apparently Jay Reatard's rhythm section would rather argue, since Pitchfork has confirmed that bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes have joined Wavves after leaving Reatard's band last month. A Pitchfork reader sent the website a YouTube video of Wavves performing with the new lineup, and they've since gotten official word from [...]
Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]

During Deer Tick incredible show in Troy, NY a few weeks back, John McCauley mentioned a new forthcoming EP, from which he and his band even showcased a few tracks. When introducing the new songs he said, "It's called More Fuel For the Fire . . . So Pitchfork can burn us again." The crowd laughed, assuming he was joking about the whole thing. Well, the statement wasn't a joke entirely. Deer Tick has a new, iTunes exclusive EP coming out on December 1st via Partisan and it's indeed entitled More [...]

I like Canadian quartet Dragonette . I like that they have supported both Basement Jaxx and Sugababes, and there's a bunch of remixes of them that I really like. Two such remixes have been floating around recently; Richard X's of "Pick Up The Phone" and Buffetlibre's of "Easy". I have been meaning to post them for a while, but the autumn coma made me miss the train so to speak. Thing is they're too good not to post, so I was really glad when Beaumont bailed me out by sending over his take on "PUTP" today! [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Hos, Hookers, Call Girls & Rent Boys collects stories, poems, and essays by sex workers. Compiled by David Henry Sterry and RJ Martin, Jr., the book organizes this collection of refreshingly genuine and brutally honest writings by category (love, life, money, etc.). The New York Times wrote of the book: "From the unappealing title, you might think this is a truly trashy [...]

Recently, this discography was extended with the iTunes Top 5 mix compilation Juizy Ibiza 2009 and as of now, Robbie can add another notch to his bedpost: his fresh artist album Closer To The Sun. Some more fantastic tracks this week. A lot of good stuff coming out of Neon Gold these days and I'm still stumbling on some brilliant quirky French bands. This was supposed to be posted this coming Sunday but I'm away so its an early one. Hope you enjoy it. Grab it mixed here . Fresh French band Jolie Cherie ease us in with their track Barcelona . Rhythmic beaty electro-pop is their nature and quirky vocals a staple of their songs. Certainly ones to watch. Their track Star recently featured on the [...]

The third installment of A Retrospective, this time the focus is on 2002. The year of rebuilding, so to speak. It was the year I discovered Cider Jack (and did so plentifully) at the local Pullman bar Rico's, and we all would rehearse Bill Brasky skits (from the SNL spots, and made up on the spot) as twenty feet away the university jazz combo performed excellent renditions of Van Morrison's "Moondance" and various Motown favorites. As we see every year, 2002 saw several real great releases. Here are my favorites. [...]
