Channeling Fleetwood Mac's musical stylings with a hint of late-era Beatles, Family of the Year braid catchy melodies, stellar male/female vocals and personal folk tales to create some of the happiest and saddest music you've ever heard. Opening up with "Feel Good Track Of Rosemead" it's a delicate harmony and rock guitar combo, very much like The New Pornographers, or The Polyphonic Spree. Actually, it's singers Joe Keefe (formerly of The Billionaires) and Vanessa Long who harmonize and get lots of milage out of their pop chemistry and aural dynamics. Fans of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds who hear the [...]
BEST ALBUMS OF THE NOUGHTIES The daunting task of putting together something that you know lots of readers won't agree with is never easy, but then we thought you could always go make your own lists. At least we had the balls... So the 50s had rock n roll, the 60s had it's pop and folk, the 70s it's punk, disco and glam, the 80s it's pop, hip hop and hair rock, the 90s it's grunge, brit pop and dance music. It begs the question - what standout genre defines the [...]

Collin Raye: I Think About You [ purchase ] I've been having a backchannel exchange with Boyhowdy since mid-day, and his as-always eloquent and informed responses gave me the courage to go public with my privately-expressed feelings – below is a copy-and-paste of my side of the dialogue: I've been writing this e-mail in my head since this week's theme was announced... I was so proud of Star Maker Machine when we covered Domestic Violence and Sexual [...]
It seems that Lindsay Lohan's friend tried to hold on intervention for the disturbed daughter at a party recently, but they didn't quite manage to do it. This is what one of Lindsay Lohan's friends related about the evening: ''She kept moving from room to room. … She was clearly hyped-up on more than just booze. It was impossible to corner her, until a few people tried to — in a bathroom when it was nearly dawn… The only problem was, she saw David Trent and immediately bolted." Well now, looks like Lindsay Lohan is like a wounded animal, but [...]

"You were there when Jimi played the flaming guitar?" ... "You saw MJ at Motown 25?"... "You saw Patrick Wolf and Florence at the Palladium?". The last one may not yet warrant inclusion in the upper echelons of music history, but Patrick Wolf will eventually be remembered as one of our generation's true talents. Friday night's homecoming concert at the London Palladium was simply outstanding. Wolf's talent has always been prodigious, but the auditorium had an unmistakable air of "happening" - it was pitched as an unmissable, one-off performance, and lived up to expectations. Patrick Wolf [...]
Patrick Wolf played an absolutely sensational, homecoming show last night at The London Palladium. A truly special evening for all involved, the night saw guest appearances from Florence Welch who joined Patrick to duet on the title track of his latest album 'The Bachelor' , followed by a star turn from Alec Empire who joined Patrick on stage for "Battle", "Hard Times" and "Vulture" . Full set list is as follows: Divine Intervention Overture [...]
Every once in a while, the urge to search for new music creeps into the soul and without question beckons to bring those searching for said music to venture to the local record shop. With that being said, whether its divine intervention, fate or any of those other kooky titles to imply the present, sometimes you take a chance on a band that you've virtually never heard of. This case in point happened recently to me and my discovery of the excellent Brooklyn, New York shoegaze indie rock trio A Place To Bury Strangers . Without question, I decided to [...]
How can the members of Slayer -now in their mid-40s-still manage to scare the shit out of me? I don't know, but let's look at the rest of the Big Four, shall we? Metallica : Harmless. Megadeth : Whiny. Anthrax : Bush-less. Yes, Slayer still brings it-and in the almost 30 (!) years they've been around, have not so much as twitched as new trends and new bands and new serial killers and new wars and new presidents have come and gone. The latest World Painted Blood sounds [...]
Electronic musician Dan Deacon , producer of this year's impressive Bromst LP and absolutely insane live music force, has been hospitalized with acute sciatica, a condition of the lower back, and forced to cancel the remainder of the shows on his current tour. Deacon's live show is a sight to behold, as dude plays on the floor with a table full of homemade instruments, flys around the crowd, messes with buttons that only he has any idea what they do, organizes dance-offs and generally blows minds. Thankfully for those who [...]
I love Flashioning Backward through UI's archives. One never knows what one will find; it's like the haunted house version of Googling. Today, we've lucked into The Last Shadow Puppets' box. Let's see what gilded, stylish paths these nice boys lead us down. Appropriately, the Last Shadow Puppets seem to enjoy Flashioning Backward themselves: Their aesthetic is early '60s era Beatles floppy (but not yet scandalous) 'dos, velvet and pop-art-era smart suit silhouettes . Somehow, they maintain enough retro-mod stylistic tension to prevent themselves from looking like sad also-rans in desperate need [...]
Today's song comes from the Canadian independent music journeyman John Southworth and his 6th full-length album "Mama Tevatron", released on October 13th of this year. The album marks a distinct shift in Southworth's discography, towards a much more minimalist brand of pop instrumentation; according to his press releases this makes for a more accessible sound, though I rarely hear people complain about not being able to get into his previous work. The song I chose to highlight from the album is the defiantly teeth-gritted wanderer I Get It Now , which is currently garnering the majority [...]
Slayer World Painted Blood American Recordings 02 November 2009 by Mark Eglinton Sometimes waiting is a very good thing. Not always, but sometimes. On first listen to World Painted Blood back in what must have been mid August, it would have been condemned, mostly for production reasons, as their worst record since well..their last bad record. However, that mix we were told, was not necessarily how the [...]
The much-ballyhooed legal intervention Courtney Love was promising over the Karaoke Kurt in Band Hero never showed up - presumably the paperwork got stolen by Ryan Adams or something - but Activision are now facing a more coherent threat: No Doubt are suing over the way they've been portrayed in the game : Rock band No Doubt sued video game publisher Activision Blizzard Inc over the use of their likeness on its new "Band Hero" product, accusing the company of turning the rockers into a virtual karaoke act. No Doubt and Activision had a contract [...]
Yes it's true! After two long months of development, trial and error, divine intervention, cosmic events and other such catastrophes, the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll has returned, and is better than ever before.
It seems I'm about to lose my job, again . There will be no semi-divine intervention putting me back this time. In fact, it's likely that I will be joined by most of the rest of the company soon after. Mind numbing as it was in the recent years, this job did provide a shelter through the ongoing recession, almost surviving it. But not quite. The mood here has an eerily cheerful facade, fueled by a mix of denial, a sense of fatality and the budding realization that C'est la vie, the time [...]

I was reading an interesting article by Alexis Petridis on The Guardian discussing whether you should try to influence your kid's tastes in music. I don't have kids myself, though as I've mentioned before I do have a 12 year old niece with very strong opinions on music. But this idea of should I or shouldn't I nudge her musical tastes in one direction or another has often crossed my mind (as well as with regard to any possible future progeny). Normally it all falls apart because I eventually realize that contributing my proteins to the gene pool [...]
Grande giornalismo d'inchiesta sul Daily Telegraph, 'Jesus's face' spotted on the toilet door in Ikea Glasgow . Citazioni citabili: "I was only heading to the toilet and found God." "My wife thought He looked like Gandalf from Lord of the Rings but it is definitely more like the Turin Shroud." "It's certainly not what you expect to find in an Ikea store. Mind you, you need a little divine intervention to get out of here sometimes." Pubblicato da ComeToDaddy | Commenti [...]
Everyone's in NY for CMJ this week. Well, except for me - I am sitting this year out. This volume of Stranded in Stereo came together quicker than any other issue, and although there are no BIG NAMES, we're confident that at least half of these will be the toast of the town by next year. Again, we're pleased with how this issue came together. Not to pick favorites, but there are some real quality bands including some that are making their debuts here. Our mailing list gets it tomorrow, but you get it [...]

Lindsay Lohan was busted in 2007 when she crashed her Mercedes into a curb and allegedly had coke on her. She was cited for driving under the influence and sentenced to probation and alcohol education classes. The people in charge of the program have contacted the court in regard to Lindsay's conduct and they are claiming that she's in violation of the terms of the program. Lindsay has been ordered to appear in court on [...]
