"Listen up you punks..." If you're a fan of hip hop, especially of innovative, noncommercial hip-hop, then DOOM is either on your radar screen or darn well should be. For old fans and new alike, his latest release Unexpected Guests is an insane collection of tracks that you'll be salivating over. Over the course of his career, DOOM has worked with the cream of the crop, artists like Talib Kweli, J Dilla, Scienz of Life, Ghostface , and many others. This album culls through his deep catalog and pulls [...]

click image to view artist in itunes Sounds like: Dangerdoom, J Dilla, Talib Kweli What's so good? atari, sega genesis, garcia vega, blunts, grilled cheese sandwiches, judo chops, revolution!! the mighty quinn, friendship!! several of my favorite things and all in the same track! after our favorite mask toting friend's previous album, born like this, sold only 11,000 copies, i was definitely not "expecting" unexpected guests to be released so timely and with such high quality. especially on the heels [...]
Time for a little underground producer special up in here! First up: Jammer ft. Toddla T. To say that I loved 'Party Animal' with my full body, heart and soul would be to tell a big fat lie. I like the production by Toddla, good energy and works well to dance to, not that crazy bout the girl thou. No no no. Her voice annoys the hell outta me. But with remixes coming from Skepta and Hardhouse Banton, this is just the first small step which will lead up to the release of [...]

Odd and cute charming fan made video for this track off Jay Stay Paid . Directed by the awesomely named Marcus McDammit. While we're on the subject, here's a little bonus Dilla beat some of you might not have, but you might be familiar with it from Jay Electronica's self-titled song over it. This is just a lovely little soulful headbanger. DOWNLOAD: J Dilla – Untitled Beat 5

The Warp debut by Glaswegian Ross Birchard is certainly one of the most interesting albums that 2009 has dropped in our collective laps. Butter is a beautifully chaotic swirl of influences: L.A. glitch-hop, smears of Warp's spacier back catalog, and at its weirdest there's charmed allusions to 1970's prog/experimental masters The Mahavishnu Orchestra. It's a wonderfully experimental affair, something far more worthy of the Warp branding than the label's current top seller Veckatimest . Trying to pick a song to feature here was a bit [...]
You might have heard that Charles Hamilton was planning a comeback, or maybe not, I didn't … but I guess that it was the only thing remaining to do after hitting rock bottom in the previous months / year. So let the hype begins with the release of this video which has graffiti artist, Keegan Gibbs, spraypaint a Los Angeles billboard with the name of Charles Hamilton right next to his favorite icon, Sonic the Hedgehog, to the soundtrack of a very possible upcoming track, which is not half bad to say the truth. The only [...]

TheRealFocus (aka Focus, the former Aftermath producer) has been leaking 'Homage' tracks since January. So far, he's covered DJ Premier , J Dilla , Pete Rock and now Dr. Dre. According to the above artwork, all of these producer-tributes are from an album called Pay Homage , coming next year. Focus' attempt to emulate a Dre beat is unusual because he was once part of Dre's stable of staff producers who feed him beats. A mix of his rejected Detox beats even popped up back in April. [...]

You know, I almost certainly wouldn't have listened to this had it not got JRocc's name on it. basically, all remixer/deejay characters please please don't step up your (already frequent) blend game on my inbox... Unless you've got credentials like the man in question of course so much spirit and soul in this. some form of mixtape is forthcoming. enjoy this slice in the meanwhile MP3: J Dilla / Michael Jackson - Player Has Butterflies

Well shit, snoozed on this one. Considering my obsession with Dilla's Donuts , you'd think I'd have an ear open when an album comes out that's just as flavorful. So to cut to the chase, your collection of instrumental hip-hop is busted if it doesn't include Parisian beat maestro Onra 's 2007 release Chinoiseries . Similar to the recently dropped Ethiopium , this project focuses it's sample source on a geographic location, mining the vinyl era of Chinese and Vietnamese music exclusively. If you like your beats staggering, erratic, and sweet, this [...]

( Editor's note: this originally appeared on Loudersoft on 4 March 2009. I've updated the post to include MP3's of the tracks so that, hopefully, it will pull people from MP3 search engines to discover Kutiman and his site. It's definitely my favorite website of 2009 and, without a doubt, one of my favorite experiences of the past decade.) Perennial Loudersoft favorite (and Israeli soul brother extraordinaire) Kutiman has changed the game up inna massive style with http://thru-you.com - wherein he takes pieces of videos from [...]

Even when the Shady-Aftermath-G-Unit triumvirate was dropping stinker after stinker, Obie Trice was cracking cuts with gifted drunkenness. Both Cheers and Second Round's On Me were rare redeeming efforts for the creatively fledgling Detroit major scene, which was assertively overshadowed as cats like Dilla and Black Milk came to redefine the D. Now it appears that Trice has left Shady, and will be dropping next year's Bottom's Up on an independent. With that said - and considering the Moss -produced cut [...]

If Dibiase does not win the title of best beatmaker in Los Angeles, he will buy it from a thespian giant named Andre who may or may not hail from Grenoble France. As this is a tough belt to win, I hope he is saving his diamonds and gold bullion. Unlike the Million Dollar Man, the Watts-born beatmaker understands the value of paying dues, as he's bounced around for over a decade, honing his craft at Blowed, Unity, and Sketch, the forerunner to the Low End Theory. Of late, he's finally said his prayers and taken his vitamins, [...]
There is nobody else doing what Ryan Leslie is doing right now. He's found some sweet middle ground between Dilla-ugly concepts of what a beat can be, futuristic synth pop production, moody D'Angelo-isms and black top 40 r'n'b writing. The complaint about Leslie is that he never goes far enough out down either road - experimental or pop accessibility - but I like the balance and minimalism. So
