I've been making things. Out of dead cows. But more on that later. During my absence I took some time to taste what was out there in the real music world. Alternative still sucks, Modern Hip-Hop/RnB/Black People music (no racist) for the most part sucks except for R. Kelly (crazy motherfucker) and Gucci (still doing his thing from jail wordup ), Country was saved by Carrie Underwood (luv u babes), Pop music will always be amazing [ sup @taylorswift13 (lanky ass bitch) [...]
After a 2006 album created in collaboration with Air and Jarvis Cocker, Charlotte Gainsbourg returns with a surprisingly great LP written and produced by Beck. The nods to psych rock, junkyard blues, half-rap cadences, and ghostly ballads won't shock anyone generally familiar with Beck's oeuvre, but Gainsbourg's versatile and vulnerable vocals add a depth missing [...]

Charlotte Gainsbourg - Beck's with lemon? Having followed her mother's path into acting (and overtaken her), Charlotte Gainsbourg seems to being doing similarly with her musical career - providing a foil to male musicians to fulfill their dream. Her first album 5:55 allowed the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Neil Hannon and Air to live out teenage reveries of creating songs with slightly outre French actresses. The fact that this was the (pas-si) beau Serge's daughter [...]
This week the nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards were handed out in L.A. in advance of the March 7th award show. With ten nominations for Best Picture this year and all but locked up races for the Best Acting awards it was difficult to be too upset with all the nominations. Every year it seems the Academy does a fairly piss poor job of recognizing the music in movies, opting to nominate every ridiculously happy Disney tune over the darker entries in movies that are a little more adult oriented. Why this is I suppose we'll never know but [...]
HANK ALTOGETHER: Yet another reason I hate the Oscars. No nomination for Jarvis Cocker's amazing original song for Fantastic Mr. Fox. At least Alexandre Desplat got some love. Here's the music end of the Oscar noms: MUSIC (ORIGINAL SONG) - "Almost There," Randy Newman for The Princess & The Frog - "Down IN New Orleans," Randy Newman for The Princess & The Frog [...]

He plays piano. He talks. He raps, complains and sometimes waffles....and now Gonzales is playing every Thursday in February at Joe's Pub in New York City. [...]

I've always found it funny that the children of famous people seemingly always wind up being famous themselves. It's almost as if the ability to be a celebrity is written into our genetic code and predetermined before we ever get a chance to act on our behalf. Take the case of Charlotte Gainsbourg. Born to Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, Gainsbourg was brought up as practically royalty in France and has been treated as such since, being allowed to release three albums with varying degrees of success and appearing in more then 35 movies. She was famous before she was [...]

There are some weeks where we have almost too much to report, be it singles or albums flying into the upper reaches of the chart, or established acts slowly losing their entire audience off the back of some 'experimental' whim. Our acts from last week, however, all performed as expected, with These New Puritans and Beach House both missing the top 40 and Eels nestling in snugly just outside the top 20 (which was a minor surprise all things considered). This week is a bit of a bumper edition, with no less than three [...]

I'm back! Did you guys miss me? No? I'm honestly not surprised, but I do feel bad about falling off the radar yet again. That's not to say my interest in writing these columns has waned at all. I wanted to publish something this month, and today may be my only good chance to do so. I wrote this last July after returning from a whirlwind trip to the UK, but I'm just bringing it to the masses on ZME for the first time now. You're welcome, Britpop fans. There's more where this came from. But for now, [...]

In the reviews for the new Charlotte Gainsbourg album "IRM," I suspect that most everyone will make mention that the title of the album is French for MRI, a medical machine Gainsbourg became intimately familiar with in 2007 when she nearly died from a brain hemorrhage resulting from a water skiing accident. I wanted to get that little detail out of the way so I don't really need to mention it again, though in so many ways the music on this album is inspired by that tragic experience. But let me first get into the details of Charlotte's background and [...]
A very British music event, February 16th sees the annual Brit Awards head over to London`s Earls Court Arena, promising a heady mix of mainstream pop and indie crossovers. Essentially hit or miss live TV, who can forget moments like Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott having cold water poured over him by the annoying and mildly controversial Chumbawamba or Jarvis Cocker waving his backside towards Michael Jackson`s vommit inducing performance of Earth Song. All of this years nominees can be found HERE . "The BRIT [...]
A.C. NEWMAN - [...]
