Keeping it fresh on a Friday — that's what today's Buzz Bands LA Show on Moheak Radio is all about. Join me at 11 a.m. for new music from Banks, the Coals, Amanda Jo Williams, Mark Braaten, WALLA, Kisses, Irontom and Davis Fetter — as well as music from forthcoming albums by The 88, Western Lows and Broken Anchor . I'll spin recent favorites from Cillie Barnes, KING, Hands and Cobalt Cranes too. And to finish off the show, a quartet of cool cover songs [...]

Join me at 7 tonight for an eclectic Mother's Day edition of the L.A. Buzz Bands Show on KCSN (88.5 FM, streaming at KCSN.org) . I'll have new tunes from Kisses, Draemings, Ten Brutes, Steelwells, Blue-Eyed Son and Young Hunting , along with that Eric Burdon/Jenny Lewis collaboration we posted about yesterday (which happened to be Burdon's birthday). I'll feature songs from recent releases by Cobalt Cranes, KG Bird and the Lonely Wild as well ... all while gazing dreamily (draemily?) from my perch at Cal [...]

First off, happy birthday Eric Burdon . The lead Animal turns 72 today, and that soulful voice of his keeps on giving. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who in January released a new solo album titled "’Til Your River Runs Dry," has teamed with L.A. siren Jenny Lewis for a remake of the Animals' 1965 hit "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." The song will appear on the compilation "True Blood Vol. 43 (out May 28 via ATO Records), the latest in a series of soundtracks for the HBO series. The idea [...]

photo by Jim Bennett RNDM - the side project of Joseph Arthur, Richard Stuverud, and Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament - performed their song "Disappearing Acts" on Conan last night. Their performance felt like it was straight out of the 50s, complete with doowop hairstyles (wigs?) and very dapper suits. It was even filmed in black and white. It's supposed to feel vintage, message received. [ CoS ] Eric [...]
It’s Friday, which means we basically can’t wait to get into bed and sleep all weekend, and also that in the meantime we’re rounding up the best songs we’ve heard this week. The past several days were curious, largely devoid of big-name releases, etc., but there’s still notable new work from These New Puritans, The-Dream, Sharon Jones, and Eric Burdon (with help from Jenny Lewis.) Elsewhere, there’s pleasantly spaced-out electronic music from Airbird/Napolian and Stellar Om Source, an unreleased Arthur Russell track, wacky Ethiopian dubstep, and more! All this goodness is streaming now, and it all awaits you after the [...]

True Blood' s not all dramatic pale tales of vampire love — its well-curated, guest-heavy soundtracks also seem to feed the musically thirsty. In the past, the show's music supervisor Gary Calamar, who also works as a KCRW DJ, has brought together Nick Cave and Neko Case , Iggy Pop and Bethany Cosentino , and now, for the upcoming volume, Eric Burdon and Jenny Lewis . Together, they duet on "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", a song recorded by Burdon and The Animals in 1965. Listen to their cover via KCRW . [...]
In 1965, British Invasion greats the Animals had a hit with their cover of Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," and now the former Animals frontman Eric Burdon has teamed up with the former Rilo Kiley leader Jenny Lewis to record another version of the song. This one is for True Blood , the HBO vampire melodrama that returns next month. The new version is, naturally, spookier and more atmospheric, and you can hear it at the KCRW website . A new True Blood soundtrack album is out 5/28 on [...]

Along with bassist, Brady Wills they finished up an album’s worth of songs and spent the better part of Spring at Brightstreet Recorders with producer/engineer, Kenny Woods (Jenny Lewis, Lykke Li, Vampire Weekend). A hypnotic blend of classic indie pop with dashes of chillwave melodies". Part 1 of our 'Tracks To [...]

photo by Autumn De Wilde Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription . This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “The Future Hunter” by The Postal Service from the 2013 album Give Up (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition) on Sub Pop . The Postal Service - A Tattered [...]

Graphic by Adam Kesner There's been a death among us - Rilo Kiley has officially, with out a doubt, broken up. Even though we all pretty much knew the band was over, this didn't make the news that Blake Sennet, Pierre de Reeder, Jason Boesel and Jenny Lewis wouldn't be making music together any easier to bear. Sure, there’s the recently released collection of deep cuts and unreleased tracks RKives , but that just makes us miss them even more. After all, for a lot of us (certainly for me) [...]

We kinda missed LA duo Wardell when this track debuted at the tail-end of last year. Brother and sister duo Sasha and Theo come to us with lots of promise; good early reviews and a sound that dips between Beach House swoons, Jenny Lewis lows and Neko Case highs. That's actually underselling it though: while their influences may be immediately evident on 'Opossum', there's enough movement to suggest these two will develop nicely in the coming months. They went [...]

Rilo Kiley 's split, back when guitarist Blake Sennett finally confirmed it in July 2011, surely didn't come as a surprise to anyone. His working relationship with Jenny Lewis, perhaps inevitably, had collapsed under the weight of the failure of its romantic counterpart; he cited "deception, disloyalty and greed" as key factors for the band's demise. If, indeed, he really did feel as bitter as his comments suggested, you could probably understand why; his and Lewis' post-Kiley careers have certainly followed markedly different trajectories to this point. I was on a train [...]

Portada del nuevo soundtrack de 'True Blood'. Let's turn this review of Brooklyn band Vietnam into a cooking show, shall we? Back in 1979 my buddy Steds and I were drunk, bored, and hungry, so we resolved to make like Julia Child and cook a stew. We added all the stock ingredients but the results were decidedly lackluster, so we improvised. A good cook works with what's at hand, and what we had at hand was lots of beer, a tab of acid, a bottle of whiskey, a couple of placidyl, and a half ounce of skunk weed, which we tossed in willy-nilly. [...]

To start the week we have the pleasure of premiering a new track from LA duo The Reflections, which comprises Darian Zahedi and Bleached member Jon Safley. They've only been working together for just over a year, but having worked with several other projects they are by no means just starting out, and this is proven in the song we have for you today. "In Another Life" demonstrates the pair's way with combining swaggering guitar and bass with hazy textures that conjure the titular other life. As the song progresses and softly cooing backing vocals seduce you into a mellow [...]

“ Grew up overnight and left in broad daylight ” sings lead vocalist and keyboardist Greta Morgan of Gold Motel – a statement that aptly epitomizes her band’s musical growth. The Chicago-based indie-pop band originally began as a side project for Morgan after her pop quartet, The Hush Sound (one of the first bands signed to Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz Fueled by Ramen Label) went on hiatus in 2009. Morgan, teamed with guitarist and vocalist Dan Duszynski, guitarist Eric Hehr, bass player Bobby Lord (formerly Matt Minx), and drummer [...]

The Panic Manual has fallen on hard economic times lately, and despite having members of our blog attend Coachella in previous years, we were unable/unwilling to send anyone to Coachella for the music extravaganza this year. Just take a look at our estimated costs for sending both a writer and a photographer: - two flights from YYZ to Palm Springs: $1300 - taxi to and from Coachella grounds - $50 - camping ground fee - $85 - sunscreen - $25 - meals - $200 - drugs - $100 -------- = too [...]

Who: The Postal Service on the main stage In 3 or Fewer Words: Signed, sealed, delivered. Memorable Because: "We're an imaginary band called the Postal Service," Ben Gibbard said halfway through the band's turn on the big stage. Imaginary? No. Accidental? Yes, the happiest of accidents. Ten years after their shot-in-the-dark album "Give Up" blew up — and longer than that since we caught beatmaker Jimmy Tamborello's monthly "sad music" L.A. club nights called Give Up — the trio took a prime main-stage slot and made people cry tears of joy.
