Our very own Alan O'Reilly was suitably impressed when he caught We Cut Corners supporting Joan as Policewoman last October . "These guys are definitely ones to watch," he said at the time and now we're making that statement official. Being a guitar/drums duo has inevitably lead to comparisons with the White Stripes, which may seem unfair on that basis alone. But if there's one thing they do share with Jack and Meg it's the ability to write a catchy tune. Mix that up with all that's good about Midlake and Bright Eyes, then add in a [...]
A little while back we told you about the high-profile list of musicians who will be providing the entertainment during next February's Winter Olympics games in Vancouver. If you don't remember and don't feel like clicking that link, then we'll tell you that those acts included the likes of Wilco, Feist, Broken Social Scene, K'Naan, Stars, Joel Plaskett, Steve Earle, Martha Wainwright, Blue Rodeo, Iron & Wine, Corb Lund, Ron Sexsmith, Joan As Policewoman, and Sun Kil Moon. Well, with the games scheduled to kick off in less than two months, we're beginning to get a [...]

I thought I'd mention my enormous admiration for the BBC's Great Lives podcast which has been absent for a while but has, in the past couple of weeks, been slipping elegantly onto my iPod once again. As the title suggests, this is a production dealing with the biographies of fascinating folk but it's the format that provides this listener with deepest satisfaction. Engaging host Matthew Parris traditionally, er, hosts a couple of characters, one a (forgive me) celebrity enthusiast of the great life in question while the other guest is an expert, often a biographer of that edition's [...]
Blame Canada... for producing one of the awesomeest and most influential rock icons of the 20th century. I'm talking, of course, about the inimitable (although Jimmy Fallon did a pretty good job imitating him...) Neil Young . And what better way to celebrate this national treasure than at Vancouver's very own 2010 Winter Olympics? On February 18, artists including Broken Social Scene, Joan as Policewoman, Sun Kil Moon, Iron & Wine and Ron Sexsmith will pay tribute to the man who has spent nearly half a century rockin' the free world, Billboard reports. [...]

Sometimes it's the little things. As a recent student of the speech and hearing sciences department, I'm constantly reminded about hearing damage and thus the important need for hearing protection. I'm pleased to report Benaroya Hall is an exception to your average concert experience: no ear plugs required. The massive grand piano, of stage-filling proportions in a smaller venue like Chop Suey , looked almost lonely in center stage. Simple lighting, simple dress: Rufus Wainwright demonstrated that you don't need any flashy business to awe the crowd (ok, maybe his tie/scarf [...]

Well look at that, It's already that time of year again: C - M - J ! Version 2009 to be precise. And you know the last thing we want is to send you off into the trenches unprepared and indecisive, which is why we're back again with yet another comprehensive plan of action/preview/treasure trove of MP3s to help nudge you through the week ahead. Just as with prior CMJ and SXSW previews, we listed only one show for each recommended band. Most of the bands listed here are playing several – if [...]

Whereas the 2002 Winter Olympics featured performances by Josh Groban, Charlotte Church, Sting, and R. Kelly, next year's events in Vancouver, B.C. will showcase a much less mainstream lineup (save for Wilco perhaps). Consequence of Sound reports that performers throughout the February 12-28 run include Broken Social Scene, K'Naan, Stars, Joel Plaskett, Steve Earle, Laurie Anderson, Martha Wainwright, Blue Rodeo, Iron & Wine, Corb Lund, Ron Sexsmith, Joan As Policewoman, and Sun Kil Moon. We're still awaiting more details on when/where this killer lineup will be performing, but we do have the deets on Wilco's set: [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive If you have the opportunity to call in the big guns on your debut album, why resist? That's exactly what Harper Simon , son of Paul Simon , did for his country-tinged eponymous collection of folk rock. While his voice faintly recalls his father's at times, he's gone a different route in the cast he's surrounded himself with. He brought in the Bird and the Bee 's Inara George for backing vocals on 'The Shine,' Joan [...]
Though an Olympics is meant to showcase athletic excellence, there's nothing that says the games have to be the only show in town. The 2010 games, to be held in Vancouver from February 12-28, will feature a lineup of artists so good that missing the curling final won't seem like such a loss. Joining Canadians Broken Social Scene will be Steve Earle, Wilco, Iron and Wine, Joan As Policewoman and Sun Kil Moon. Though it's cool enough that these artists will be playing the Olympics, it would be much better if they could be integrated into the competition. Maybe every [...]
Canada's known for indie rock, so makes sense you'll find plenty of homegrown talent (BSS, Stars) and international musicians (Wilco, Iron & Wine, Joan As Policewoman) near the slopes at Vancouver's Winter Olympics. More names at CoS .
Vancouver won't be the only thing Canada will be showing off when it hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics early next year. As it turns out, the country will also be showcasing its incredibly talented and diverse music scene throughout the Olympic's two+ week run, set to take place from February 12-28. Broken Social Scene, K'Naan, Stars, Matthew Good, Joel Plaskett, Steve Earle, Laurie Anderson, Martha Wainwright, Blue Rodeo, Iron & Wine, Corb Lund, Ron Sexsmith, Joan As Policewoman, and Sun Kil Moon are all confirmed to be performing in some capacity at an Olympics related event. On this day - October 13th, skilled troubadour Harper Simon, who adeptly utilizes the fabled vocal gift inherited from his father Paul Simon, releases his debut album to the world – 10 tracks paying tribute to the hallowed long play format and the seamless arc and structure that it traditionally has brought us when executed correctly. Harper recorded his new album in Nashville, New York and Los Angeles with a storied cast of collaborators including multi-generational legends that you'll hear numerous audio fingerprints of throughout the record. Notable names include legendary producer Bob Johnston (Dylan, Cash, [...]
This is what happens when you leave it to the weekend to catch up with the Marc Riley programmes (cracking this week, by the way - Joan As Policewoman, Strike The Colours, First Aid Kit and Ambulances in session): I'd fallen down on the job by missing the news that Noah And The Whale had everything stolen in Manchester in the small hours of Wednesday morning: We're sad to report that last night Noah and the Whale had all of their instruments and tour equipment stolen from Trinity Way NCP car park in Manchester. At some [...]
It's somewhat amusing to read the various writeups on Harper Simon . Just how long do you have to go before you get to the proverbial kicker -- "hey, this is Paul Simon's kid." Finally delivering his superlative self-titled debut solo album on October 13 after working on some band projects (and one with "step-mom" Edie Brickell, the fine Heavy Circles), it's obvious early on that the 36-year-old Simon clearly has inherited a substantial quantity of knockout songwriter genes from his iconic tunesmith dad. Also at work: a special affinity for the art form known fondly as THE ALBUM, [...]

The most-popular Embed & Breakfast Man weekends so far have been: 1. MGMT 2. Cathal Coughlan 3. Stereolab 4. Joan As Policewoman 5. Echobelly 6. Amon Duul II 7. The Boo Radleys 8. The Pooh Sticks 9. Tim Burgess 10. PJ Harvey This week, we've been thinking about these releases: Richard Hawley - True Love's Gutter [...]

Glass Ghost's simple but sublime "Like A Diamond" was the first track to garner attention some months back, and deservedly so. It's an affecting, gently aspirated bedtime piece coupling GG main mind Eliot Kimsky's introspective ruminations with understated rimclicks and rolling Rhodes keys. In tune and percussion it struck me as the nocturnal cousin to Merriweather Post Pavilion 's "Guys Eyes," and in feel and tone it seemed to capture Kimsky's Glass Ghost moniker perfectly: nearly translucent and delicate vocals set to a melody that lingered long after you pressed stop. Since then Eliot's signed to Western Vinyl and [...]
