In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Ben Shaberman's essay collection The Vegan Monologues is more than a book about not eating animals. Sherman touches on political, social, and environmental issues while recounting his own experiences, always in his humorous yet poignant voice. In his own words, here is Ben Shaberman's Book Notes music playlist for his essay collection, The Vegan Monologues : [...]

...at least according to NPR listeners . Check it out after the jump, then read and listen to the whole All Songs Considered piece HERE . I've really enjoyed reading all these "decade-end" lists so far, and in my opinion this list seems to come closest to accurately reflecting the decade in music. If you're interested, you can also find a running list of such lists at largehearted boy . Check 'em out and see what made the decade in music for everyone. Here's NPRs list of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings": [...]

Drums Play Spaceland Monday Night (and It's Free) Ray Davies put on a fantastic show on Saturday night at the Orpheum. If you get a chance to see him on this tour do not hesitate. More on that later. Another great week this week. If you're into buzz bands you might want to check out Drums tonight, The Big Pink on Wednesday, Tape Deck Mountain on Thursday, Neon Indian on Friday and The XX on Saturday. Some of those will be good, but I'm recommending a variety of [...]

Three weeks ago I posted a list of my 50 favorite albums of the past decade. You can catch up with that here , here , here , here , and here , if you'd like. While drafting the list I found that I rediscovered plenty of albums that were and are still worthy of more attention, even though they ultimately weren't included on the finished product. It was extremely difficult to cut many of them, especially those made by lesser-known artists. So starting last week, continuing today, and for the next 2 Mondays I'll [...]
I know I know, it came out in September and yes I am aware other blogs may have written about it, am I bothered? Not in the least, this blog has never been about being the first to post about someone although many times we have been but in the case of Mr Bondy I feel his new album, When the devil's loose , deserves to be blogged about by as many people as possible as it's an amazing piece of work. Recorded mostly in Mississipi by Bruce Watson of Fat possum records who has [...]
[MP3] Solange - Stillness Is The Move Amber Coffman has a really great voice and is cute as a button, especially when she hops around on stage like a diva during "Stillness Is The Move". So much for acting like a diva, as a last minute change to this Thursday's edition we'll hear the Dirty Projector's tune trade in its indie boots for soulful socks. Solange Knowles , the sister to booty shaking Beyoncé , reworks the tune with a smooth voice [...]

Amber Rubarth, a singer/songwriter whose beautiful music is getting worldwide attention, just got back from a US tour with Joshua Radin and Gary Jules. We got a chance to catch up with her and learn about the tour, her life as a independent artist, and what inspired her to pick up a guitar for the first time at the age of 20 and pursue a career in music. IM: Hey Amber, welcome back from the tour! How was it? AR: The tour was AMAZING!!!! Truly fantastic. I was [...]

There's too many reasons not to like Dawn Landes: she plays the glockenspiel, has a background in sound engineering, covers the likes of Peter Bjorn & John and Tom Petty, and is married to fellow folky Josh Ritter. Most importantly, she has a beautiful voice and sticks it some pretty good tunes. I highly recommend Landes's excellent performance of "Straight Lines" on the Black Cab Sessions . Then dig into her brilliantly layered version of Harry Nilsson's "Life Line"—multi-tracked vocals and guitars shimmering with hypnotic and endearing quirk. (Photo by Wrapped In Piano Strings ) [...]

Here we are, bestowed with another "Best of.." list. This time Paste takes on the duty of compiling the "50 Best Albums of the Decade (2000-2009)". If you head over to their site , you can sample each of the albums listed. I always enjoy reading these lists even though I often disagree with them. You'd think by now I should know what I'm getting myself into when I read a "Best of.." list on an indie music site. But hey, kudos to them. I couldn't even compile a list of [...]

Yesterday, Paste released its list of the 50 Best Albums Of The 2000s, and the list was topped by none other than Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise , which honestly seems like it was released way longer ago, so established has he become in the indie-rock firmament. Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot , the Arcade Fire's Funeral , Radiohead's Kid A , and Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning rounded out the top five. Full rundown after the jump, but first, a few reactions. THE GOOD: Hey, [...]
