We all braved the cold winter night for a chance to catch Bowerbirds and Julie Doiron Saturday night. Luckily, the wintery weather seemed suitable for the music, and with Lone Stars in hand, we caught a solid set from the North Carolina crew. Follow the jump for the full review. Julie Doiron was pleasantly surprising. For some reason, she recalls a more raucous Kimya Dawson . Her lyrics are as simplistic, [...]
It's been a mostly soggy and groggy week since our last winning POTW announcement. Just look outside: It's beautiful. I'll admit, I'm pretty fond of these dreary days, that's just my style (I cou... Pitchfork even gave it a well deserved 9.0 . [...]
A recent show I regret missing---damn cold!---was when Julie Doiron dropped in at the tiny Cobourg bar in Cabbagetown a few Saturday's ago to play an near-impromptu free set. Reg Vermue ( Gentleman Reg ) was in the audience, and she asked him to join her for "Will You Still Love Me in December." Colin Medley was also there: Joe captured the audio of this moment. (And read his review of the show, too.) Basia Bulat 's new album, Heart of [...]

Who : Basia Bulat Title : Heart of My Own Label : Rough Trade RIYL : Amy Milan, Julie Doiron, Lavender Diamond, indie rock girls Short Review : Let us assign adjectives to best describe Basia Bulat and her new album. We start with stunning, move quickly to dynamic, and wind our way through startling. There's comparisons to some of her contemporaries over there, and lo and behold we have the folk star of 2010. Mount Eerie with Julie Doiron and Fred Squire - Grave Robbers This is a guest post by Jamie of the previously-mentioned great band The Last Dinosaur , in which he talks a little bit about his favourite album of his recent years. In this digital age I've found myself longing for the days where, on the long bus journey to college, I would deliberately sit alone, pushing the mini-disc player headphones into my ears, [...]

A t this point, some 13 years after those first Microphones cassettes and eight years since the watershed The Glow, Pt. 2, we tend to know what to expect from Phil Elverum. The production will be cavernous and downright primordial, the instruments resounding as though carved from bone and strung with wool. Natural and elemental imagery will abound. And, of course, we'll be treated to Elverum's unmistakable, unsophisticated, ever wonder-struck mumble. Yet Elverum has a way of playing with those expectations. And, more to the point, knowing what to expect can make us underestimate, which can in turn lead to [...]

Easily one of the most powerful and rich folk records of the last few years. Daniel, Fred & Julie is folk music at its finest. Born out of friendship and supported by the emotions that encompass the human condition, this collection of folk songs from the public domain and stirring original compositions is powerful in its simplicity. Daniel Romano, Fred Squires, and Julie Doiron, accomplished musicians in their own right, gathered in Sackville, New Brunswick in the summer of 2009. After a tape machine was set up in Squires' garage,...

![The Rural Alberta Advantage @ Lincoln Hall [1/16/10]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2267261_lg.jpg)
Some pics from Saturday night's show at Lincoln Hall featuring The Rural Alberta Advantage , Bowerbirds and Julie Doiron . Good show overall, though not quite as good as I was hoping. Nils' (of RAA) voice was pretty beat up - he was apparently getting over a cold. As a result, he wasn't quite able to reach a lot of the notes he usually does, and it affected the songs in a pretty noticeable way. Still, though, kudos to him for fighting through it, including choosing to play a new song [...]

(all photos by Keith Klenowski) I first heard Bowerbirds when their stunning debut, Hymns for a Dark Horse garnered attention from The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle. ENS would blindly follow John Darnielle into a volcano, so of course Bowerbirds captured our attention. The Raleigh-based folk group signed to Dead Oceans and in July 2009 released their second full-length, Upper Air . The band returned to Cincinnati on Wednesday in support of their latest album along with Julie Doiron. Canadian singer-songwriter Julie [...]

In a man's world like that of the music industry (and popular/rock music is, largely, very much still a man's world), this makes perfect sense. The easiest path for women to take when it comes to creating music is often to simply work/create alone. Perhaps there's more to this? Maybe men really are dogs, and thus favor the pack approach to creating music? Perhaps women favor art based upon the kind of introspection that's too personal to share with band mates? (Perhaps there's a future EAR FARM article being born as I type...?) That's neither here nor there, but the [...]
I stayed pretty close to home (i.e. Toronto), music-wise, in 2009, but for good reason. Here are the 15 albums and EPs that I liked the most, in alphabetical order by artist: Bahamas - Pink Strat I love this album to pieces. It's so simple, so beautiful. And Afie Jurvanen is a great character on stage. Download : " Lonely Loves " Gentleman Reg - Jet Black G Reg & band have a place in my heart. Reg [...]

Here's what's going on in Chicago this week. As always, my picks are in bold . The obvious highlight of the week is the Tomorrow Never Knows festival taking place at Schubas and Lincoln Hall, and, in turn, the highlight of the festival - for me, at least - is getting to see The Rural Alberta Advantage for the first time since last April. If you haven't seen them yet, or even if you have, you really need to go to this show. Aside from the RAA, I also [...]
