Hope you enjoyed the Halloween episodes! They were a bit more fun to make than the usual weekly episodes, though also a bit more work. I think I doubled my lifetime whispering by doing the "voices"for those. Our two-year-old, Sydney, helped me do this one. Shoot The Player is run by a Sydney duo who shoot videos of (mostly) local Aussie acts performing in various areas around the city. Artists include Dead Letter Chorus, An Horse, Sarah Blasko, Kaki King, Port O'Brien, Vivian Girls, Andrew Bird, Amanda Palmer and more. It's a fantastic site, and the films they make are high quality snapshots of artists performing in a casual setting, giving them a really personal feel. The above Shoot The Player video is Ben Lee performing his version of MGMT's 'Kids' in Rushcutter's Bay Park, Sydney. Don't expect to hear anything [...]

I grew up playing Mario Kart, and really loved the game despite the fact that I was absolutely horrible at it. My strategy was to be so bad that I would distract my opponents, and then sneak attack a banana peel, but that never seemed to work out too well for me. I once slipped on my own peel which I didn't even know was possible... Mario and I have parted ways over the years (on good terms), but there are some really good Mario songs out there that still keep us close. My favorite is called the [...]

Back in early 2008, Marco Benevento set-up a Thursday night residency at Sullivan Hall that featured a series of killer combos and collaborations including: Andrew Barr, Billy Martin, Bobby Previte, Brad Barr, DJ Olive, G. Calvin Weston, Reed Mathis, Joe Russo, John Ellis, Kaki King, Marc Friedman, Skerik, Stanton Moore, and Steven Bernstein. Shine A Light Productions captured it all on film and just recently completed a DVD of the events entitled "Marco Benevento (& Friends): Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency." Here's a little video teaser they put together for the [...]

I forgot all about these guys. I heard their Fort Music EP a while back and just checked back on them and their debut album is out now! It's called King of Rosa , and like their EP, it's nothing revolutionary, just a bunch of solid alt-rock tunes. Easy listening and tour dates over at MySpace .

Performing music with roots in Americana, containing deep intertwining layers of melody, rhythm and time reminiscent of Eastern Europe, Oso is creating rock music that's moving beyond the boundaries of genre. Described as 'technical folk' and 'math-rock world music', Oso makes music that blends the intensity of sweeping compositions with the intimacy of heart-felt vocals. With 'a circus-like sense of theater', Oso's performances connect with people due to the sheer energy and emotion of the experience, reaching music lovers of all cultures and ages. As often as they [...]

Very sadly, it's starting to get colder here in CT, and my blogmates in NY and MN aren't faring much better I suspect.. Fall makes me think of a lot of songs, and being back at school in particular brings up a lot of particular genres. This is a mix of songs that were on repeat last fall and songs that have been on repeat so far this fall. Animal Collective — College Amazon / iTunes Kaki King — Montreal Amazon [...]

i'm not one of these people that reads great significance into dates like today's, but that doesn't mean i don't get a small thrill from it. plus it makes for a convenient mixtape title. i've been listening to lots of britpop lately for some reason, perhaps i'm homesick/nostaligic. but i've steered clear of that for this - if you like that kind of thing then you've probably got it, right? as usual, this is a pretty random mix of current listens, old & new... ::: years of rice and salt - plankton ::: the cravats - [...]

I have to admit: I knew very little about Kaki King before I heard about this project. I knew that she was a classical guitar virtuoso, that one of my best friends in this entire world is mildly obsessed with her and, vaguely, I'm pretty sure I knew about her sexual proclivities, which is neither here nor there. However, when PopWreckoning's very own Reni Papananias told me that she was working on a piece for Kaki's Guitar Art project, I was forced to do my homework... mostly because Reni and I are [...]
