This is a Fred Neill song from her first record, It's So Hard to Tell You Who's Going to Love You the Best. It was released in 1969. He once said, "She sure can sing the shit out of the blues." Karen Dalton MP3 File yousendit
Thao Nguyen of Thao with the Get Down Stay Down has written a long, impassioned article for Bitch magazine on breakup songs. Titled "Break Me Off a Piece of that Breakup Song," it looks at "the perverse pleasure of musical pain" you get from wallowing in sad songs, and lists ten of Nguyen's favorites. The Virgina native-turned-San Francisco musician should know. Her newest CD, Know Better Learn Faster is one of the most memorable post-breakup albums in recent memory, with its emotionally-fraught songs like "When We Swam," "Good Bye Good [...]

By Tobi Vail, musician, influential DIY punk zinester, activist and feminist theorist from Olympia, Wash. To read more of her writing, check out Jigsaw Underground photo by Joaquin de la Puente At the end of the '90s, I got excited when I realized that young girls no longer needed to hang out with creepy record-collector guys in order to find out about cool music. Information was out there for everyone to access equally via the Internet. Knowledge about obscure records could [...]

Inevitably, a love of coverage leads to a constant, ever-vigilant search for thoughtful, well-crafted reinterpretation. I spend hours each week mining full albums for the hidden cover song, and scanning MySpace and email inbox for the promotional, the one-off acoustic in-studio radio track, and the otherwise unreleased singleton, and the endless discovery is eminently worth the pursuit. But there's no question that tribute albums are the cover lover's bread and butter. I gather these things in like truffles, and hold a special place for them in my heart and in my [...]
The dozen songs on the Sounds From The Anthology Archives digital compilation are each excellent in their own, often hazed-out way. The collection's a mix of rare material that spans the '60s to the '80s and includes Karen Dalton, Betty Davis, Swedish garage rockers the Stomachmouths, Peruvian crew Telegraph Avenue (who turn in the wide-eyed, zoned-out awesome "Happy"), Indianapolis psych band Anonymous, Father Yod's Ya Ho Wha 13, etc. It exists to announce the Live + Archival series, a collaboration between the digital reissue label Anthology Archives and American Apparel's Viva Radio. We're told the series will be [...]

There's an interesting article on Paste about some up and coming acts that are taking up the "(rather) musty mantle of folk music", including Alela Diane (left) who looks and sound-wise is often compared to Karen Dalton (right). Not sure I see it . Alela Diane has since cut and colored her hair and now looks nothing like Dalton; Karen O maybe. There's also footage of Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold performing the [...]
Another year of (mostly) daily tunes here at Doklands, and I have to say I'm still having fun with this. I considered winding this up after hitting 1,000 tracks because really, how much is there left to say? Glad I didn't, though. .. [...]

I left home with friends; told my mother "I was going to a concert." By Sunday, she had me reported as a missing person. I was one of the "mud sliders." Oh what a feelin'. I just wanted to see Janis J. She was sooo great. We survived on the "grub" we took with us. We found people who didn't mind sharing food for some tent space to sleep and get out of the rain for a little while. I love seeing the look on peoples faces when I say, "I was at Woodstock." Good people, good music, good memories. [...]

Electrelane is a british indie/experimental rock band (previously located in Brighton, UK ... now scattered around the world). They've been making music starting with 1998, they released their first album in 2001 - "Rock it to the Moon" - and have been touring ever since. The band was last formed (well, theoretically, it still is) by Emma Gaze, Mia Clarke, Verity Susman and Ros Murray. There have also been other past members, such as Tracey Houdek (1998–1999), Rupert Noble (1999), Debbie Ball (1998–2000) and Rachel Dalley (1999–2004). After their last album in 2007 - "No [...]

Tiny Vipers Life on Earth ( Sub Pop ) Similar Sounds: Elliott Smith, Kath Bloom, Karen Dalton, Grouper File Under: folk, downer, heart-on-sleeve Other: Hands Across the Void If the term 'emo' hadn't been driven deep into the soil by pretty boy bands glossed in makeup and sequins; if the idea of 'folk' wasn't appropriated by the likes of Pete Seeger and Phil Ochs during a [...]

Transparent Heart A kaleidoscopic sound encompassing qualities of Kate Bush, Karen Dalton and Arthur Russell, Glasser (aka Cameron Mesirow with help from Matt Popieluch and Charles Burrus) instantly captivates. In 'Apply' Mesirow's erie percussive vocal sounds and tribal rhythms cascade over swoony sighs and a cranky bottom end synth grumble. Clearly creative in the way she can use her voice, Glasser has been remixed by Chairlift, apt considering the two bands' comparative, almost classical-sounding voices. Mesirow's music is beautiful in a messed up, awkward, weird kind of way, and not [...]

The Concretes don't need a long introduction, since they have been making music for us, for the past ten years - they are active, as a band, since 1995. The indie pop band comes from Stockholm (Sweden). They began as a three-piece band - Victoria Bergsman, Maria Eriksson, and Lisa Milberg - but have had as many as eight members at once. Presently, the band members are as follow: - Lisa Milberg (vocals, drums, etc), - Ludvig Rylander (horns, piano, etc), - Daniel Värjö (guitar, mandolin, etc), - [...]

Mariee Sioux is one of my favorite new folk singers. I was under the (wrong) impression that she was another Karen Dalton-esque folk singer who was being reissued. I was dead wrong. She was born in 1985. It's almost impossible to imagine her shopping in Old Navy or checking her email after listening to her music. It's much easier to imagine her in a teepee bartering with pilgrims. [...]
This is from Dalton's first album, It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You Best. I've used this Fred Neil quote before but it is too perfect not to repeat. "Karen has been my favorite female vocalist as well as a heavy influence on my own style of singing since the early sixties. I first picked up on her one night in the village at the "Cock & Bull" (later the Bitter End). Her voice grabbed me immediately. She did "Blues On The Ceiling" (which is my song) with so much feeling that if she told [...]

I was a Bob Dylan fan long before I got into the Band. I thought they were good with him but kind of lame by themselves. See, I first heard "I Shall Be Released" on Dylan's 1978 At Budokan live album where it has full horns, gospel chorus, and blasts right out at ya. Compared to that the Band version just sounded flaccid. Thankfully I've come around since then. Seeing The Last Waltz will do that to ya. Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett - Tears of [...]

Earlier this year we gave you a taste of Ohio indie rock trio Heartless Bastards with the song ' The Mountain '. Their new record, also titled The Mountain, was released in February to much acclaim. The band is currently on a mammoth US tour supporting Jenny Lewis, and later this year, The Decemberists. We spoke to lead singer Erika Wennerstrom about the new record, going on tour and perhaps a date in India. 1. Your new album The [...]
