Best Coast Play Several Shows with Vivian Girls This Week Monday February 1, 2010 [Pick of the Night] Princeton / 60 Watt Kid / Active Child / TS and the Past Haunts @ Spaceland (Free) – Princeton kick off their Monday night residency. [...]

Another day, another interview. If only every week was like this! My latest victim is one of Ireland's finest young songwriters, Mick Flannery. The Corkman speaks about recording with a big label, the joy of playing live, Christmas albums, and how he approaches songwriting. He also shows his own love for fantastic music by picking his best album of the decade. Did you find it a very different experience making White Lies with EMI after self-producing your debut? I did yes. I was very much out of my comfort zone, a bit [...]

I tried so hard to like this, but I don't. Another for The Music Magazine... Ah Lily Allen, you have a lot to answer for. How were you to know that your unique sound and image would be saturated by swathes of pretenders all scrambling for a chance to sit on your perky, cheeky cockney-pop throne..? For yes, Eliza Doolittle (that cannot be her real name - an obvious pseudonym if ever there was one) is another Allen clone. Like Kate Walsh, Doolittle is trying desperately to do something different but unlike Walsh she shows very few musical [...]
Facts first: chartmaker Billboard announced last week that starting with their Dec 5th issue, they will be adding a Folk Albums chart to their sales-tracking activities. Snip : ...The Nielsen SoundScan-based survey will house new releases from traditional folk artists such Joan Baez, Ani DiFranco and Monsters of Folk, as well as appropriate titles by acoustic-based singer-songwriters such as Carly Simon, Rosanne Cash and Joshua Radin. The 15-position chart, to be managed by Gary Trust, will run periodically in print and appear weekly on billboard.biz and billboard.com. "Billboard's Folk Albums chart will [...]
This being her third album in seven years, you couldn't accuse Kate Walsh of being prolific compared to many of her peers. She has, however, changed her style over time. This release is far more country rock than the jazzier pop of Tim's House , yet it still retains the beautifully constructed vulnerability of both her previous works. The fragile singer songwriter (a la Joni Mitchell) is still present but, if anything, this album builds on it with aspects of alt-country and Gram Parsons, complete with all the inherent self doubt and insecurities. [...]

As light as clouds and as soft as your favourite pillow, it would be hard to not find anything she creates a form of easy listening, [...]
In a world overrun by wannabe pop princesses, Kate Walsh stands her ground and sticks to her principles, resulting in the production of a classic album. The young British singer-songwriter has an interesting history by anyone's standards. Walsh was only 20 when she released her first record, Clocktower Park, on the independent UK label, Kitchenware. Then, unsigned for four years, she recorded and released the follow-up, Tim's House . The self-released album reached an unlikely No. [...]

In Comedy, theatrical improvisers Impromptu Splendor won a Canadian Comedy Award last weekend in Saint John, NB, for Best Improv Troupe (click HERE for a list of all the winners); the trio and their impressive roster of special guests resume local shows in October with several special one offs, including this Friday's play not written by David French, with special guest Ted Dykstra , that will close The BUZZ Festival . What with this being the Thanksgiving long weekend, there's a few less comedy choices than [...]

This time last year The Pop Cop came up with an ingenious idea . Having noticed how outrageously attractive the Glasgow gig calendar was in the month of October, we appealed directly to the Lord Provost to declare 'Rocktoberfest' the official catch-all name for 31 days of live music in the city. We mapped out one amazing show per day - from pop and soul to rock 'n' roll, from hot newcomers to world conquerors, but despite doing all the hard work for him, the Lord Provost decided not to take us up on our [...]

I'm going to avoid the incandescent love stories and get straight to the point. Today, September 25th, marks our two-year anniversary. Yes, everything is celebrated here. A lot of laughs were shared and fortunately enough, we rarely ever waltzed with sadness. This has been, in fact, the happiest two years of my life. While I'm still unsure who wears the pants, I find myself in a completely balanced relationship and we're continuing to grow... always closer, never apart. This is a collection of songs I put together that... if not scream "I love you!"... provoke a certain level of emotions [...]

Taken from her new album Light and Dark , Brit singer/songwriter Kate Walsh 's "Gather My Strength" is as starkly intimate and gentle as a whisper, an example of how something this sweet and mellow can still connect solidly. Lurking in the shadows of the lovely melody and pristine arrangements, however, is the sound of deep melancholy and a heart waiting to be broken (if they're not already damaged). Recently released in the U.K., Light and Dark is on track for a fall release in the States -- actualy date TBA. More here . Watch [...]

Joe Pernice Appears at McCabe's on Saturday Anybody make it to Sunset Junction this weekend? Any highlights? I did make it to Elvis Costello last week. I read a glowing review in the LA Times, but I agreed with my concert companion when he said "This is more soulless than Disney's Country Bear Jamboree." In addition to wrecking others' classics, he even wrecked some of his own. This is a pretty fantastic week to be a music fan in LA. The only problem is all the [...]
