The record i would bring to a desert island would have to be Gentlemen, with Afghan Whigs . The album was released in october 93, but i heard the band live the first time 1994. I bought the album at the concert. I have never gotten so floored by any other record. I do not know what it is that makes it so beautiful, it's like it has everything, from the cover to the fantastic songs inside. Awesome vocals and playing, before Dulli got stuck on the myth of himself (i think). [...]

Shannon Taggart - Exorcism 2 After a little break, the current of Great Songs of 2008 continues to flow strong... including a fragile voice from Madrid, the single from Antony's latest masterpiece, the bells and whistles of a remixed Canadian summer anthem, a standout track from a huge Australian new wave trio, the awaited return of a shadowy German indie band, [...]

In Austin this week for SxSW: Sweden's talented song-writer Kristoffer Ragnstam has a new album in time for its songs to rain down upon indie rock audiences at South-by-Southwest this week. "Wrong Side of the Room" (in fine record stores and online through itunes) is certainly one worth owning. If you're in Austin, check him out. If not - and this is your very first exposure, get ready to be impressed! KRISTOFFER RAGNSTAM [...]

The music festival portion of SXSW kicks off today! The festival features more than 1,800 musical acts from all over the world on over 80 stages in downtown Austin, Texas. The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) has selected an instrumental track from Swedish artist Kristoffer Ragnstam for use in their "Earth Hour" campaign. Check it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =rc7mXE6dv18

It's Saturday morning and what better way to start the day than a full English breakfast (vegetarian of course) of tracks from bands that have contacted the Devil over the week and I haven't quite got around to posting? The Locks Yawned Loose Genre: Americana / Folk Rock / Acoustic [...]

The fourth (count 'em) installment of my SXSW artists feature. If you're new to the game, I list some of the acts I'm excited about, with mp3s and a brief note about each. And on to the action! P-T time. Stay tuned for the grand finale later this week. Mieka Pauley - "9:453 [MP3] This Cambridge, MA artist doesn't need much of an introduction from me. Most of you know her. And if you don't, get to know her. The strength and range of her voice is stunning. [...]

As the names keep piling up for South by Southwest 2009 ( Decemberists at Stubbs ! Grizzy Bear! Devo!!), a more subtle development has caught our attention that - while less impressive than this year's roster of names - will no doubt prove far more useful to those intrepid souls heading down to Austin next month. Similar to the customizable schedule-maker that CMJ unveiled for last year's Music Marathon, mySXSW.com is a new platform unveiled on the SXSW site earlier this week that allows users to manage their own personal itineraries throughout the four-day event. [...]

With much critical acclaim heaped upon the debut album, Bon Iver is poised to release a follow-up four song EP Blood Bank (due out January 20th). I must admit, I'm not a huge Bon Iver fan. For my tastes I find Justin Vernon falls into the category Kristoffer Ragnstam calls "bad poets with acoustic guitars". There are so many acts with the same or similar sound proliferating college radio and

We're getting over the hump with this continuation of the list. Best albums of 2008, #60-41 : 60. Ave To - Three Way Intersection A jazzy-hip hop funk fusion. Review 59. ------------------------------ -- 40. Kristoffer Ragnstam - Wrong Side of the Room We all knew that it was only a matter of time before a Swedish pop artist made this list, and I will also admit that Kristoffer Ragnstam will not be the last before this year's best-of concludes. I first took notice of Ragnstam when he released a great single in " Breakfast by the Mattress ", a sly effort that saw his practical use of fast-paced indie-pop flourish with irresistible melodies and gleeful hooks. Accessibly enjoyable melodies and hooks [...]
While the pop charts continued to lap up the likes of back-from-the-brink Britney and the usual retreads, a couple of left-of-centre artists have won the hearts of hipsters everywhere. These are new classics, songs that take the elements of great tunes past and reconfigure them into something original and special. I hope you enjoy them. #10 Guillemots – Falling Out Of Reach Guillemots may have pissed off a heap of their fans this year with a glitzy, studio-driven album in place of their previous orchestral [...]

Shitting crikey, it's... THE KISS ME, I'VE QUIT SMOKING FESTIVE FIFTY! This has been a pretty good year for music, all told, and given that I'm the neurotic, compulsive-listmaker type, what better way to see it out than to a ttempt to channel all of that good music into a handy top 50. The rules are simple - no more than one song per band, singles from 2007 albums are alright, but nothing from reissues. As for how long it [...]
Here's one of the two CD mixes I put together in 2006 for all my friends. (Come back Sunday for the second one, Have Yourself A Mellow Little Christmas, and I'll also explain how Christmas music was my introduction to MP3 blogs.) Two years ago, I was celebrating having a computer and regular net access for the first time in literally years. Also, for the first time in ages, due to changes in my job, I was really digging on Christmas music, and the spirit of peace and love I hadn't gotten much of for years. This is a nice [...]
