All My Friends Few people north of Christchurch will have heard O'Lovely's new EP, that's because Laura Lee Watson hasn't got around to distributing it yet. Working all day in a camera shop, the band's front-woman and founding member has had little time to promote the band's new release, which has been sitting in her room since May. Lost Luck is O'Lovely's second EP, but one can draw few comparisons between it and the band's first self-titled EP, released in [...]

We've dished out quite a bit of content this week, so I suppose I'll get to the music list early. If you're just tuning in, I've switched up the way these Radio Dick posts go, attempting to offer a little more commentary on the tracks I'm posting. This week, I've got an interesting mix of material from around the globe. The scene's been a tad quiet with all of the madness going on at CMJ. Hopefully, our writer James, who just spent the week rambling around NYC, will hit you with any coverage he was able to either 1) document, [...]

Holed up amidst the smoggy abyss that is Milan, disjointed from both the marvelous monotony of t'internet and the bountiful musical wealth stored within, collecting interest and appeal day-by-day, a splurge of hype and frenzy would surely swathe out from wireless ports like bemused Muse obsessives dashing for the railings as if their prophesised, mythical musings on the impending apocalypse would end following one final night spent being neuronally overloaded. Whilst the world as we know it, evidently, is yet to collapse, crumble and devour itself like Brit lads wolfing down extortionate tourist-luring Margheritas (both of the lime and cheese [...]

So last night was the UK's MOBO awards live in Glasgow and on BBC Three. There's all sorts of discussion flying around on Twitter , mainly around the fact that Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder , despite being the two biggest UK stars right now, walked away empty handed. There's also the wider discussion that award shows like this don't make that much of a serious point in this day and age, with blogs and everyone having a voice on the internet, and that maybe they need controversies like this to get their own [...]

Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records Written by John Cook with MacMcCaughan and Laura Ballance Rating: An Absolutely Brilliant Must-Read Buy it at Amazon I first discovered Superchunk in 1995 after hearing "Hyper Enough" on modern rock stations and MTV, and I ended up buying Here's Where the Strings Come In , their 7th full-length record (including two singles collections). They instantly became one of my favorite bands and I bought up their [...]

O ne of my pet theories is that one of the kickstarts for creative indigenous jazz in Europe was the tours undertaken there by Eric Dolphy as a leader (late summer 1961, summer 1964) and with John Coltrane (winter 1961) and Charles Mingus (summer 1964). The passage through the region of such an iconoclastic figure as Dolphy, particularly at these two hypercreative moments for him, must have had some effect on the local musicians who heard or, in some cases, played with him. Those tours were documented and are back in the forefront with a [...]
Disclaimer: I went to Latitude as a paying customer, not as a journalist. I had no press or photo passes, no special access. Just a tent, a camera, a notebook, over 20 litres of cider and a handful of close friends. This is just one look in thousands at a festival that is like no other, just my personal experiences. To see even more pictures from all three days of the festival, then head on over to my Flickr page . ______________________________ __________ I wake up at [...]

3 weeks after an amazing festival, i recap my top 5 performances, other highlights and big misses. my top 5 in no particular order... 1. The Maccabees @ Guardian Lounge I was so excited about this performance after missing them on the Other Stage earlier in the day (due to a horrific Regina Spektor clash). I have seen the maccabees three times before and they were great all 3 times, but on the Guardian lounge they exceeded my expectations. Wall of Arms is my [...]

Monday 6/8/09 [Pick of the Night] Castledoor / Hopewell / John Webster Johns / Eastern Conference Champions @ Spaceland (Free) - Castledoor continues their Monday night residency. [Recommended] Oliver Future / Other Lives @ The Echo (Free) - Oliver Future's residency should get a boost from Other Lives. [...]
Photography by Us Well, my friends.... it's time once again to say good-bye, adieu, aveda-shane, & ahoj as TsuruBride & I take a short leave of absence, a little break, yep, a little vacation for the next 10 days from the daily grind that is the routine of life. It's funny, before I met baby, the idea of taking a full week off of work was a pretty foreign concept, how ironic it would take a foreigner to teach just how good & healthy a break from work could really be... [...]
My latest discovery and minor obsession is the music of Swedish singer-songwriter Nina Kinert. Her latest album "Pets & Friends" came out in her native Scandanavia last year, but I only discovered it last week. Within a day of hearing her initially, I was ordering the album as import because I couldn't be without it. She is modern folk and reminds me a bit of Laura Marling. She has an absolutely breathtaking voice and has been touring in support of friend Ane Brun, whose backing vocals (as well as Britta Persson's) are featured on "Pets & Friends". "Pets [...]

Never heard of Meiko, Emily Wells, or Laura Jansen? Well you've probably heard their songs. All three are the darlings of network TV lately. Meiko has been featured on numerous Grey's Anatomy episodes, while Jansen's song "Soujah" was placed in MTV's Newport Harbor (and don't give me the "I don't watch reality shows about rich teenyboppers. You do. Don't lie.) I saw these three two nights ago at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach. It was a great cap to the weekend. Laura played first. The girl is fun to [...]
