So last night was the UK's MOBO awards live in Glasgow and on BBC Three. There's all sorts of discussion flying around on Twitter , mainly around the fact that Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder , despite being the two biggest UK stars right now, walked away empty handed. O ne of my pet theories is that one of the kickstarts for creative indigenous jazz in Europe was the tours undertaken there by Eric Dolphy as a leader (late summer 1961, summer 1964) and with John Coltrane (winter 1961) and Charles Mingus (summer 1964). My latest discovery and minor obsession is the music of Swedish singer-songwriter Nina Kinert. Her latest album "Pets & Friends" came out in her native Scandanavia last year, but I only discovered it last week. Within a day of hearing her initially, I was ordering the album as import because I couldn't be without it. She is modern folk and reminds me a bit of Laura Marling.
