Day 1 is complete. Here are the songs the popped up on the iPod on Day 1 of my cross country move (while I was tracking them). This is also why I love using shuffle. I wouldn't have picked out most of these if I were building a playlist from scratch. Wilco - Monday Stephen Malkmus - Gardenia Marah - Wild West Love Song Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers Gogol Bordello - Immigrant Punk Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone The Beatles - Don't Ever Change Alela Diane - White As Diamonds [...]
Episode two of Local Lixx Austin is packed with more local gems just waiting to be discovered. This week's show has earthy folk from David Wingo's Ola Podrida, some pub-rock revival from Leatherbag, spare folk from Silent Land Time Machine and even more great indie rock from Wiretree and Sunset. Stay tuned till the end of the broadcast because I saved the best for last: Burywood's tune - off his new album There Is an Abstraction Ladder - is perhaps the most impressive of the bunch. Ola Podrida "Donkey" Leatherbag [...]

Li'l Cap'n Travis has always been one of our favorite Austin bands and we always make a point to check them out when they play around town. So if you're looking for some cheap local jams on Friday night, head to Continental Club for a set by the Austin alt-country band. Fellow locals Leatherbag and Aaron Blount and The Mockingales will also be playing before the headliners. Show starts around 10pm. Download: Li'l Cap'n Travis - Sugar Buzz [MP3]
As an Austin Town Hall adventure, this was our first team outing to the new venue in town, The Independent . They've been working with C3 , and fortunately for all of us, they've lined up some really great shows. We were stoked to see Little Joy , though a bit saddened that Fab would not be in attendance. Follow the jump to continue reading. First, let me begin with a little commentary on The Independent . The space is great, and it's perfect [...]
The Sycamore house show in Denton last night went beyond my expectations. Both local acts were great, but I was really surprised by Best Friends Forever . The A/C in the house didn't work, so I had no intention for watching more than a couple of minutes of their set due to the extreme indoor temperature. However, once they kicked in with their rhythmically captivating (somewhere between Kira Roessler and every band on 99 Records ) set, it was impossible to leave. A friend had warned me that [...]
The Los Angeles Times reviews Yoshihiro Tatsumi's massive graphic memoir, A Drifting Life (the most impressive comic I have read all year). As much as the book is a personal take on the formative years of manga, it's also a peek into the artist's creative process and a history lesson that shows how a transitioning postwar culture shaped manga's form and content. Tatsumi's inclusion of Japanese societal touchstones, such as the U.S. testing in the 1950s of the hydrogen bomb in the Pacific and the rise of [...]

John Michael's Year-End Picks
Wednesday, December 16, 2009 Top 5 albums of the year is always a love/hate list to write for me. First of all, I love going back through the posts I've written through the year and seeing what albums "stuck," and which ones didn't quite have the lasting power that I predicted. But I also have a ridiculously hard time choosing and then ordering the albums based on some kind of nebulous criteria. I feel fairly certain that these 5 represented those that I personally enjoyed the most, and the ones that I listened to [...]

Beach House
Friday, November 20, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: Lots of good shows this weekend. I recommend Free Energy at the Mohawk tonight, Leatherbag at the Ghost Room tomorrow and Local H on Sunday evening. Me? Yeah, I'll be on the couch, so be sure to have some fun for me too. Most of the bloggers in the world posted up today's song earlier in the week (last year in internet time), but I've never really understood the fascination with Beach House, and [...]

ATH Interviews: Black Joe Lewis
Shortly after our time at ACL, we realized that we failed to interview any of our favorite local acts playing over the weekend. To make up for our miscue, we caught up with up and coming Austin artist Black Joe Lewis via email. Black Joe has been hard working hard and touring the country with his band The Honeybears after releasing his debut LP earlier this year. Follow the jump to read full interview. ACL Day 1: Medeski Martin and Wood; Walter Wolfman Washington
Folks who insist young people won't listen to jazz should have been at Medeski, Martin and Wood's show Friday at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. I don't know how many were watching, but I'm guessing the audience numbered in the thousands. It was a diverse crowd, too, composed mostly of music fans under 30. The flags and balloons flying above the crowd featured the names of several colleges, the Marines, a couple of bras, a smiley face, a freak flag, a giant puppet and a lot more. I saw one guy wearing a Guns 'n' Roses [...]
John Michael Entry #43
Sunday, September 27, 2009 Hello friends. This week I've got a new album from Austin's Monument To No One, plus a few notes on musical coincidences (i.e. a new band I'm excited about), how to cut through all the ACL bullshit (hello Leatherbag), some reissues (horray Octopus Project), and the top way to not get good press (sorry Deaf Ears). Let's get this show on the road: Monument To No One - Self Titled MTNO's debut LP captures the brazen guitar riffs and [...]
