Guess this is the sort of stuff you will find under the tree this Christmas - if you have been bad. I'd rather have a gift card, you know? Anyway - here are some new efforts from Big Superstars who are still trying to get your hard-earned money this holiday season, although you need it way more than they do. Norah Jones has sold a zillion albums but she has really put out only four, and The Fall is certainly her liveliest album to date. She's kinda wanting to [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Hos, Hookers, Call Girls & Rent Boys collects stories, poems, and essays by sex workers. Compiled by David Henry Sterry and RJ Martin, Jr., the book organizes this collection of refreshingly genuine and brutally honest writings by category (love, life, money, etc.). The New York Times wrote of the book: "From the unappealing title, you might think this is a truly trashy [...]

I'm always excited when I get CDs from local bands, but I was particularly excited when I opened a package on Friday with the new album from Thomas A. Minor & The Picket Line . I've seen The Picket Line back Bonnie Billy at Funtown and at the Old Tarr Distillery and I've seen Cheyenne Mize with Bonnie Billy in Bloomington , with Ben Sollee at the NuLu Fest and with Arnett Hollow . I'm kicking myself for missing their CD release show, but as soon as they pop up again, [...]

Television stars have sometimes had an easier path to success on the charts than other performers. Several have parlayed their success on the tube to a hit on the record. However, few have done it as successful, or been as serious about their craft as John Schneider . The star of the CBS classic The Dukes Of Hazzard also placed 11 top ten songs on the country charts from 1981-1987. In 1987, the sky was seemingly the limit for the New York-born singer. He had just won the "Star Of Tomorrow" award from Music [...]
Donnybrook reviewed films playing the Starz Denver Film Festival this week on a 100 star system. Why? Because our opinion counts 20 times more than most peoples'. Our panel learned many lessons, one of them being: don't let Adam Scott near your girlfriend, especially if Adam Scott happens to be YOUR BROTHER. Words by Angora Holly Polo, Fritz Godard , and Donnybrook's newest Unnamed Intern #2 . Harmony and Me: 79 STARS [...]

We've already discussed this song on BoL , and also discussed Annie Lenox's version in particular, BUT, as this Mixtape hopefully makes abundantly clear, there is still a lot more to be sung/said about Bob's great "Waiting In Vain" song. So here goes a major revelation of beaucoup versions of this song including five versions by Bob. That's right, FIVE versions by Mr. Marley himself. Two are from the Deluxe Edition of Exodus (one is the original release and the other is an alternate version). The alternate is notable for the [...]

Today's Digging Deeper is all about Bob Dylan. We've been celebrating his music for the past week and now he's finally here! He'll be performing tonight, November 9th, at the Liacouras Center at Temple University. This morning you heard Rickie Lee Jones' cover of "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and Toots Hibbert's cover of "Maggie's Farm".Looking for more covers? Paste Magazine did an article

Inevitably, a love of coverage leads to a constant, ever-vigilant search for thoughtful, well-crafted reinterpretation. I spend hours each week mining full albums for the hidden cover song, and scanning MySpace and email inbox for the promotional, the one-off acoustic in-studio radio track, and the otherwise unreleased singleton, and the endless discovery is eminently worth the pursuit. But there's no question that tribute albums are the cover lover's bread and butter. I gather these things in like truffles, and hold a special place for them in my heart and in my [...]

(The Energy Never Dies) : per avere [...]
