I listen to a lot of music. A lot of music. I can't speak for AIV or Romeosidvicious, but the list of records I'd like to review for Ninebullets is about three miles long, and that's before I've sorted through anything that's been submitted for review (AIV handles the bulk of that, so his workload is exponentially larger). Point is, sometimes a record slips through the cracks. In the interest of trying to cover a few more bases, and inspired by AIV's recent 140-character Twitter reviews, I introduce to you a new [...]
Like a throwback to the early days of Hawkwind, Jethro Tull and other quintessentially British musical absurdists (even mythical speed metallers Sabbat), The Witch And The Robot deal in decidedly weird folk/prog fare (or should that be fayre), with enough quasi-mystical lyrics to embarrass a sci-fi convention. That said, it seems this particular bunch of prog-lovers, hailing from England's Lake District, aren't afraid to laugh at themselves, as even a cursory listen to the so-bad-it's-kinda-funny opener 'Giants' Graves' attests to. Musically, they're pretty impressive at times, and are capable of raising quite a racket when the mood [...]

Nirvana: In Utero (1993) Adam: I was 12 years old and my family was on vacation in Florida when I saw the news reports on TV in our hotel saying that the singer from a band I was vaguely familiar with had killed himself. I was just beginning to be interested in rock music in 1994, and after Kurt Cobain's suicide, I wasn't allowed to own any Nirvana albums. I had to get my Nirvana fix [...]
neil mcsweeney plies his trade in territory that's been radio blighted by every guitar wielding blubbering hormonal sac with a plastic soul to bare, with blanditudes proffered to soft-faced men in shiny cars and bleary-eyed women drinking wine alone in over-decorated apartments. territory that once encompassed a buncha folks from sam cooke to hank williams to bob dylan to tom waits - fella's (and fellettes) that strap on a six string or piano and bash out an honest to god song – now reduced to the sad bit in hollyoaks or the credits montage at the end of some sporting [...]
Sometimes I just don't want to follow the beat of new music. Thus, The Yester-daily Choice, the rare occasion where I share a bit of my love for things old and wonderful. I wish I could say I'm a huge Leonard Cohen fan. I've spent years of my life fighting with my older, sometimes smarter brother [...]
Following up on covering The Velvet Underground & Nico and Songs of Leonard Cohen , Beck's Record Club takes on Skip Spence's classic Oar along with Wilco, Feist and Jamie Lidell. The first fruit from the sessions, album opener "Little Hands," is up on Vimeo now: Beck shares some notes on the session: This one took place last June when Wilco was in town for the release of their new eponymous album. They came by after [...]
As we previously reported, during their swing through California earlier this summer Wilco stopped by Beck's recording studio to lend a hand to his Record Club project - which has already featured albums by The Velvet Underground and Leonard Cohen. For the third installment, the combo took on Skip Spence's cult masterpiece Oar. Here's Beck, Wilco and the lovely Leslie Feist with the album's opening track, Little Hands...
the present's not that pleasant + Leonard Cohen: "The Darknesss" @ Caesars Palace, November 12th 2009 Sarai♥WoaH
Wilco's much-anticipated contribution to Beck's Record Club is now available. The project, available through Beck's site, which had previously included covers of The Velvet Underground & Nico and Songs of Leonard Cohen by Beck and special guest artists, now turns its attention to 1969's Oar, the sole solo release from the late Skip Spence, Jefferson Airplane's original drummer and a member of Moby Grape. First up is the album's opening track, "Little Hands," with Wilco, Leslie Feist, and Jamie Lidell performing. more about " Video: Wilco [...]

Many entertainers performing in Las Vegas are aware of a malady known as "Vegas Throat." Due to this city's arid climate, singers with sensitive vocals often have a problem adapting to the low humidity. When seventy-five year old Leonard Cohen took the stage last night at the Caesars Palace Colosseum, I feared the already raspy and baritone-voiced icon was suffering the dreaded affliction. Luckily, it was a false alarm. I know Mr. Cohen has a beautifully rough voice to begin with, but last night however, his initial vocals sounded like a worn-out piece of sixty-grit sandpaper. Thankfully, it soon eased [...]

Sitting here, waiting for something to trigger a more up-beat mood...need to finish Like Sugar Popcast 28. It was due out 5 days ago. Getting into the sounds of Dag for Dag... Drowned In Sound writes : "Dag for Dag combine early-Cure, Violent Femmes, Cramps, and (perhaps) early Low (an inevitable effect of forlorn female vocals and minimal instrumentation)". I thought I was exploring some Swedish stuff, but these two are actually newly signed to Saddle Creek and come from America! They wandered about, it seems, and ended up close to where I nearly landed. Somehow, Bjork's "I [...]
Beck has announced the next Record Club project covering Skip Spence's Oar with Feist & Wilco. That sounds like a pretty awesome collaboration so it'll be exciting to hear the results. As always, you can expect Musical Pairings to make MP3s of the sessions available once they've finished with the project. Until then enjoy the first track from the collection, the tune "Little Hands": Record Club: Skip Spence "Little Hands" from Beck Hansen on Vimeo . MP3: Beck [...]
Abba, REO Speedwagon, Whitney [...]

I went to the zoo on Wednesday. That has nothing to do with music - I just wanted to share the cool gator picture I took. Let's recap the week: - New Magnetic Fields! New Tindersticks! New Lambchop! And a Chris Knox tribute album to boot. It's like God looked at my list of favorite bands and said, "let's give him more". - Random Songs came and went from Broadcast, The Wannadies, Chappaquiddick Skyline, The Notwist, and Stars. You all really liked [...]
So in keeping with the theme of my last post, I thought I'd continue posting about American musicians who spent significant time in Israel. This week's entry: Leonard Cohen. Not to shock any readers, but Leonard Cohen is Jewish (although now he's also a Buddhist as I understand it). Indeed, Cohen attended the Herzliyah High School in Montreal . I mention this as a prelude to Cohen's trip to Israel in October, 1973. Cohen, apparently coming off of a bad break-up, decided to clear his mind by coming to Israel as it was beginning what it thought [...]
