i've had the privileged opportunity to share some of my own thoughts with recording artist, dj, and formant records label owner, Leroy Bella aka SINES. you might recall the name from a track i posted a few months back in a little article i wrote called: future sounds of the underground . this is a man of many faces, a jack-of-all trades sort. i'm really impressed at his ability to juggle all these different roles and still keep it tight and rolling. obviously this is no walk in the park, and i have much respect [...]

15. Prosumer & Murat Tepeli, "U&I" [ Ostgut Tonträger ] ( buy ) While more widespread appreciation of the Ostgut Tonträger/Berghain/Panoramaba r ethos may have removed much of the mystery from Berlin's stalwart sound in 2009, Prosumer and Murat Telepi demonstrated the sustainability of their magic touch in the simple, direct, effective, and surprisingly endearing "U & I." Equally focused and detached, the track moves confidently between Elif Biçer's deeply hypnotic siren's call and Prosumer's direct and harmonious call to satisfaction. The captivating ambivalence created with such straightforward (and potentially throwaway) lyrical content suggests exactly [...]

Filed under: Electronic , New Music , Canada With the rise of '80s sensibilities in pop music, it seems everyone and their jive soul bro have been dropping synth basslines and drum machines into their songs. But few have committed themselves as wholeheartedly to the decade's sound and style as Montreal's electro-funk kingpins Chromeo . When the duo -- childhood friends Dave "Dave-1" Macklovitch and Patrick "Pee Thugg" Gemayel -- dropped their 2004 debut 'She's in Control,' its anachronistic odes to the sexy [...]

Starting with an impromptu invitation to John Vanderslice four years ago, I hosted a string of a dozen and an half bands on KZSU , including some of my favorite local bands. I've decided to compile some of my favorite songs from those sessions into a digital album that I'm offering here for free . I'm really excited about this and I hope you enjoy it half as much as I am. The download includes mp3s of all the songs, the album art as a jpg and a special cut-out [...]
Naming your group after a suspected terrorist might cause some double-takes, but it's about time hipsters tore off their keffiyeh scarves and started listening to what's really happening in the world. Whereas Kanye West's and Lupe Fiasco's lavish lifestyles have catapulted Chicago's hip-hop scene into the mainstream, Chicago's gritty trio BBU (a.k.a Bin Laden Blowin' Up or Black, Brown and Ugly) coast on underground appeal. A confluence of juke music, rap, and political rants, BBU's singles incite a dancing good time. The threesome (Illekt, Epic, and Jasson Perez) began performing together in small and [...]

Ok so as you guys know I have been a lazy ass and haven't made any posts in April 'cause of final exams, graduation, celebrating, and yada yada yada. I'll be doing super super quick reviews (like seriously under 100 words probsies) on Yeah Yeah Yeah's It's Blitz! , Boy Least Likely To's Law of the Playground , Camera Obscura's My Maudlin Career , and Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix . Short and sweet just 'cause these bands have been blogged about like crazy for the past little while already and I'd rather cover albums that have [...]

(or why I came home with a gnome) Early Friday afternoon, a rented CruiseAmerica 252 recreational vehicle rolled into the WestWorld complex in Scottsdale, Arizona. In the back, my two little girls, ages 3 and 5. In the passenger seat, my wife. And rollin' gangsta-style in the driver's seat? Suge Knight!! WTF?! Heh, kidding of course. 'Twas me. The RV: that's how we rolled this weekend for the McDowell Mountain Music Festival. We cruised into the RV area, hooked up our casa on wheels to power and water, and [...]
"Adapt or die, Sam" says the Devil ( Ray Wise ) at one point during the very funny "Dirty Sexy Mongol" last night, and the same could be said for the Reaper series, as it still struggles to find an audience in it's second season. While the series maintained it's numbers from last week's premiere, it's still The CW's sacrificial lamb left to Idol 's slaughter . 'Adapt' was the theme for the episode, with the escaped demon being the infamous mogul Genghis Kahn , who quickly adapts [...]
I've finally given in to the pressure and created a musicforants.com twitter account . Social media is now dominating every part of my life. Not like I was ever against twittering, but since I discovered that I can both feed my blog to my twitter and update it from my iPhone with picture-taking + GPS location tracking (I'm using this app ), it's made it much more appealing. Plus it's 2009, people, anything can happen. I'll probably be making some more song recommendations on here, quoting 30 rock, and taking pictures of random stuff and posting [...]
One of the DC-area bands that I discovered when I first moved down here a year ago was Fredericksburg's Tereu Tereu. The band released an excellent split EP with San Francisco's The Light Footwork (where'd they go?) last year, and has been hard at work ever since on their debut album. Thankfully, that album, entitled All That Keeps Us Together, is now finished, and it's fantastic. Don't take

2008 has been a year where my heart returned to the 80's romantic vibe that cleared dance floors and left lovers lip-locked throughout the decade. Almost every track on this list is flooded with analog synths, Outfield-esque male vocal ballads, and lots of sexy arpeggiators! Bag Raiders – Shooting Stars (MP3) Bag Raiders were HUGE on my '08 hype list and I was INSANELY disappointed upon only seeing two tracks on their EP. Fortunately, the B-side made up for [...]

5. Mixtape Volume 3 by The Hood Internet The Hood Internet's Mixtape Volume 3 is, in my opinion, the best mixtape released by the Chicago-based mash-up duo. Sometimes described as Girl Talk on Adderall, The Hood Internet takes indie rock hits and mashes them up to hip-hop beats. Mixtape Volume 3 is no exception. A few of the our favorite tracks include Crime Mob vs The Dodos - "Stilettos In The Park", Pimp C (feat. Lil Keke) vs The New Pornographers - "Knocking Fablez Down" and Lil Wayne (feat. [...]

It's the end of the year! Can you believe it? I swear each year goes by faster and faster. The end of the year is a time consolidating the past memories and preparing yourself for new ones. The year end activity is of course, making new year's resolutions...new ones, improving on old ones, or ditching the whole process in generaaaal. I discovered a pretty cool site for you goal-oriented folks called 43 Things where you share your goals with other people, your progress, and at the same time, you can cheer each other on! The most [...]

Concerts can be some of the most exhilarating moments of one's life, sometimes taking our breath with mind-blowing stage setups, thrilling light shows or just a really fun crowd. But how much of this actually has to do with the band's performance versus who's in attendance that night? It all boils down to one major question: does location matter? Now, there has always been something about London. Everything and anything has always seemed so much better there, so much more unique; the necessary seasoning to make any entrée flawless. So, when I noticed one of my favorite bands was playing [...]

THE LIST!!!!!! 1. Crookers Remix of Kid Cudi - Day N' Night The Crookers have killed it this year. This song characterizes the experience of going out over the past four months; mostly because I would get excited before the DJ even dropped it. Just hearing a hint that it was coming on would make me go crazy. There were many moments where this track defined an evening for me. Hearing Crookers' drop it themselves at Circa was a big one; however, the most memorable drop [...]
