From top, left to right: Edward Sharpe, HolidayHoliday, The Sun, Moses Campbell, Voice On Tape, Katie The Pest, Robot Koch, BOAT, Mr. Dream What defines this edition of "Hear, Here" is a vaguely roadtrippy California aura. Perhaps each song marks a particular leg on a trip [that I'll never go on because I live in New York]. Many of these bands hail from California, and if not California, the West Coast, and if not the West Coast, fine, Germany. The sounds range from lounge-y tech house [...]

Frank Yang When I got all effusive about seeing Austin's Ume way back at SxSW in March, it wasn't just because they their showcase blew me away - it did - but because I also figured that it would be my last chance to see and write about the trio until SxSW next year, so there was no point in being measured. After all, they were a small band with no label, no tour support and hailing from a long ways away from Toronto meant the odds of catching them up live again [...]

Not to be confused with the Jay-Z joint from 2001, or the Mötley Crüe song from'87, its not even a cover of the Liz Phair song from her legendary album; this Girls Girls Girls is from Assassins 88 who hail from Oz (Australia for you laymen). This duo makes thrashy and often abrasive lo-fi tunes that feel as if the band recorded a slick indie-pop record and then someone spilled their rum & coke on the sound board and what comes out is golden. You can purchase a few artifacts from this band through their record [...]

Now most will agree that Matador Records is about as big as a label can get while still retaining the label "Indie". Come on, these folks were the home to Pavement, Liz Phair, and now Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth for god-sakes! Well they do a good job of working to maintain their indie cred. The latest is the announcement that on January 26th, the label will release Casual Victim Pile, a

Here's what I love most about being a music blogger: I get to go from listening to the murky underworld of Raekwon's Cuban Lynx 2 to the sublime, ethereal sounds of Los Angeles' Yoya . Vocally, lead singer Alex Pfender sounds like Ben Gibbard imitating Jeff Buckley: He's got a light touch, smooth and kind. Musically, the debut EP is a few shades to the center of Radiohead: Moody and soaring, but accessible. I particularly enjoyed "The Moon and the Shore," with its time changes and guitar-drum-vocal interplay. This EP is definitely worth your time. [...]

Calling all Chicago indie rockers! The Chicago History Museum needs YOU. The museum is attempting to piece together the history of Chicago's most revered rock club Lounge Ax, nearly ten years after its closing. If you have pictures, concert tickets or any other Lounge Ax memorabilia, consider donating them to the Chicago History Museum. The former Lincoln Park venue hosted such up-and-coming (at the time) acts as Liz Phair, Pavement, Wilco and the White Stripes as well as comedian David Sedaris and the Blue Man Group [...]

Numerous times during this month I've heard people comment on how they love fall, how the cool, crisp weather is a welcome from the dog days of summer. The leaves are colorful, Halloween decorations are up, and you can almost feel the anticipation of Thanksgiving and Christmas. For the pessimists and Goths, autumn can also symbolize death - leaves falling from the trees, leaving the bare branches exposed to the cold, cruel winter. A bit macbre, if not poetic. For me fall seems somewhere in between - a bit of anticipation and beauty, contrasted by sadness [...]

We've written about Max Vernon a bit before here and here on The Stu Reid Experiment. Recently, we got a chance to catch up with him about his past success, his upcoming projects, and what he counts among his influences. Check it out! You burst onto the scene with a synthy cover of Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl' that got a lot of press in the blogosphere – was the success you had with that track completely unexpected? Pretty much! I [...]

I was just rummaging through my collection to find something to blog about and came across a song I really liked from 1993. You remember 1993 don't you? C'mon, it was only 16 years ago now. It was the year of brilliant songs like The Breeders' Cannonball, The London Suede's Animal Nitrate, Beck's Loser, New Order's Regret, Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box, Pearl Jam's Daughter, Smashing Pumpkins' Cherub Rock, Belly's Feed The Tree, Mazzy Star's Fade Into You, Liz Phair's Fuck and Run, Urge Overkill's Positive Bleeding, Juliana Hatfield's My Sister, Elastica's Stutter, Soul Asylum's Black Gold, Bjork's Human Behaviour, James' [...]
I had an mp3 drop into my mailbox from a little band out of Atlanta, GA called The Good Graces. "Bad Driver" reminded me of the small quirky tales Gordon Gano from the Violent Femmes used to tell. There's a little early Liz Phair in there too as well. It's entertaining, I promise. The [...]

So at this time, there is no news to put out there. That doesn't mean there won't be any later. But what are you going to do till then? You have to have something to fill the gap. Well with that said, I have made a mixtape of stuff I have been listening to over the last six months. Some of the music is new and some of it is old. But what a great day to spend the day. The Features - The Temporary Blues.mp3 [...]

Friday Five : \ˈfrī-(ˌ)dā,-dē ˈfīv\ : On the sixth day of every week I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five and drop a little knowledge and insight for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, sometimes there isn't. Sometimes we have guest, but most of the time it's just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments. The Five : The [...]

For some listeners, singer-songwriters can blur into one another very easily....especially when one attends a local free venue for more than a few hours, watching the performances come and go. An acoustic guitar and a voice can form a particularly limited weapon when faced with a loud, indifferent crowd. Thankfully, Alejandra O'Leary has more than enough firepower in her musical arsenal to not only take the good fight to the masses, she'll also have little trouble winning the so called 'battle for hearts & [...]
Sherwood has announced plans to release their second album for MySpace Records . The record is titled Qu and is due out October 13, 2009 . It is the follow-up to A Different Light which was released in 2007. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Brad Wood (Liz Phair, Smashing Pumpkins, Sunny Day Real Estate).

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. The Mother Garden , Robin Romm's debut collection of short fiction, showcases the author's vast imagination and keen storytelling skills in these often surreal stories of death and grief. The New York Times wrote of the book: "In her embrace of the off-kilter (one story is aptly titled "The Tilt"), Romm is mining the same vein as Aimee Bender and Judy Budnitz, whose [...]
The Louisville Courier-Journal profiles singer-songwriter Josh Ritter . Ritter is a literate songwriter who makes smart use of historical references in his lyrics, befitting a graduate of Oberlin College, a refuge of Midwest creative types (and other singer-songwriters including Liz Phair). He's the son of two neuroscientists, and he fled to Oberlin from northwestern Idaho with the intent of joining the family business. Decider New York interviews Foreign Born's Matt Popieluch. [...]
