Pants Yell! "Someone Loves You" from Slumberland Records on Vimeo . Slumberland Records has a swagger to its walk this year, with attention bearing out: while breakout acts such as Crystal Stilts and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Pants Yell! have hit their [...]
Lone Rhino is the first solo-career album by the artist Adrian Belew following years of playing in groups such as Talking Heads (as a touring member) and King Crimson (as lead singer and main songwriter), Frank Zappa, and David Bowie to name a few. Really the list of people he has played with is pretty incredible as he is widely recognized as an "incredibly versatile player. He remains one of the most underrated and woefully overlooked guitarists of recent times. Belew has released a number of solo albums for Island Records and Atlantic Records which blend Beatles-inspired pop-rock with [...]

Started in 1989 by a few members of some D.C. based bands, Slumberland Records has become synonymous with great indie pop music over the last 20-years. Since 1992, Mike Schulman of Black Tambourine has helmed the label bringing us fantastic music from bands like Stereolab, The Ropers, The Aislers Set, Crystal Stilts, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. This week Slumberland Records is celebrating it's 20th anniversary with a pair of shows, Friday in Washington D.C. at the Black Cat ( tix ) and Saturday in Brooklyn at The Bell House ( [...]

Not So Fast - The Lodger The Financial Times reports : Republicans complain they are being forced into an artificial timetable that is reducing the chances of agreement. People on both sides of the committee, chaired by Chris Dodd, the Democratic senator, say the chances of the law being passed by the year-end, as planned by the administration, are slight. "The more time we [take], the more intelligent regulatory process we'll have . . . and I hope we'll take until the first quarter of 2010 to actually put something into law," said Mr [...]

Another one of my favorites from Years of Future Passed is Graham Parker. He had a couple of different backing bands over the years, but there is no mistaking his voice. I have remarked in the past about my college years basically transforming what I thought were my musical tastes. Graham Parker & The Rumour were a British "New Wave" (I get so tired of adhering to the labeling of bands, but if nothing else it gives it a bit of a time stamp I suppose) act that three relatively well known records by 1979's Squeezing Out Sparks. All I [...]

Following on from Mary's fantastic review of Charlotte Hatherley 's new album , we were fortunate enough to get the opportunity to speak with Charlotte... Hello Charlotte. What are you up to today? I'm in Bristol today playing with Bat For Lashes on the final UK tour. I'm waiting to soundcheck having a cup of tea, answering your questions. This is your third album. Did you instinctively want to change direction from your previous two albums? [...]

In 1990, U2 went to Germany just before the Berlin Wall came down and reunification occurred to begin recording their next album, the result of which would be my favorite album ever, Achtung Baby . They recorded in Berlin's Hansa Ton Studio where David Bowie worked with Brian Eno to create Low, Heroes, and Lodger . U2 went into the studio with Daniel Lanois and Flood with very little material and just tried to create songs while jamming around some song sketches and parts. Then the tapes got stolen and later bootlegged all around the world, after they [...]
This is an ever changing and (hopefully) expanding list of some of the songs I have mentioned before in this blog or simply stuff I have found somewhere on the web that I find interesting, but have no time to write about. All files have been found somewhere in cyberspace (and NONE of them have uploaded by me, so I cannot help you with any requests you might have - just keep returning and something new might pop up), so they will be available until the artists, record labels, fans, whatever decide to remove them. Thanks to a few readers, [...]

C'mon .....you don't think yesterday's little bit of poptastic stuff was a mere coincidence? For Part 33 of this series, I'm moving away from singles to the record that was voted #1 LP by the writers on the NME in 1979. The full list, for your info was:- 1. Fear of music - Talking heads 2. Metal box - Public Image ltd. 3. Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division 4. Setting [...]

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's self titled debut full length kind of snuck up on me when it was released at the beginning of this year. For a good few years before it, I had been re-discovering bands like Orange Juice, The Pastels, The Vaselines, Teenage Fanclub and Shop Assistants (along with a lot of other C86 stuff), and it was quite thrilling to me on a personal level to hear an indie pop record like Pains' debut-- one that certainly looked backwards while somehow managing to sound fresh and exciting, almost like rebellion against a [...]

A review for Altsounds. Get Back Guinozzi! is a new French band formed a few years ago by Eglantine Gouzy and Fred Landini. After a brief foray as a solo artist in 2004, singer Gouzy teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Landini for this unique collaboration. The band's debut album Carpet Madness is an interesting ride, blending genres, random concepts, child-like vocals and a plethora of backing tracks. At it's best, the songs on Carpet Madness instantly grab your attention. The title track owes much to De La Soul's Eye Know with [...]

Der Katalog ist handverlesen (Velocity Girl, Stereolab, The Softies, Rocketship, The Lodger), aktuelle Aushängeschilder sind Crystal Stilts und The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Letztere veröffentlichen nächste Woche eine neue EP mit dem Titel "Higher Than The Stars". Die EP enthält [...]
My first post ever was on August 21, 2005, which was four years from today, and somehow I'm still here. I guess you could say this is my blogiversary (or my blograduation from Blog High). Anyway, in the spirit of wistful remembrance, I have a few images of what the site looked like in it's different iterations. For example, the image above is the first header I used (it only lasted about two weeks thankfully). I'll tell you now, a lot of these are not pretty, but hopefully you've all forgiven me for the some of [...]
The Delfields are an indie pop band out of Jersey and yesterday they self-released their LP Ogres . It's filled with excellent hazy pop songs that mix a classic sound with a modern one, and the title track is no exception. Songs like these fit well with artists like The Lodger and Central Services. The video for their title track is an interesting look inside the soul. The protagonist, continually plagued by demons, constructs special glasses that hide the demons from his vision. The realm [...]

Zurück zu den 80'ern... Die Zeit war geprägt von Dark-, New-, Romantic-Wave; von Punk, Post-Punk etc. Beispielhaft habe ich hier eine Auswahl zusammengestellt - vertreten sind Baroque Bordello, Colin Newman, Fad Gadget, Liaisons Dangereuses, Mark Stewart, The Church, The Nits, The Psychedelic Furs + Toyah. Ich hoffe, der/die eine oder andere wird Gefallen daran finden... Baroque Bordello (France) In the early eighties, the French cold wave and new wave scene was boiling and many bands even got a recognition abroad. This was the case with BAROQUE [...]

The Rosie Taylor Project 's new single 'Lovers of Something Like It' (Bad Sneakers Records) slakes the thirst like a cold Budvar in a pub full of Carling. 'Lovers…' is more folk-tinged sweet melancholy and vibrant melodies, freshened by blasts of trumpet. There's a hint of the heartbroken Belle & Sebastian in the song, especially in the line: "there's no defeat like a kiss from an ex-lovers lips". 'Sloe Gin Fizz' is another observational tale in the tradition of 'A Good Café on George Street' with a mournful, outsider air but a hint of desert-dry humour, showing [...]
I bought this record a couple of weeks ago but I've only got round to blogging about it now for my ongoing series of weekly bought records. I will update again with this week's purchase soon. I was going to put in a bit of research before commenting about it and I quickly found out that Pitchfork had rated it the greatest album of the 1970s. I don't necessary agree with that, but it is certainly one of my favourites of that decade. And so, through laziness and admiration for great writing, I present to you Pitchfork's very [...]

After two stellar fuzz-pop releases by two amazing artists - The Pains of Being Pure At Heart and Liechtenstien - I was expecting more of the same from the self-titled LP by Bricolage . However, expectations were fallacious; Bricolage has more in common with label mates The Lodger than the aforementioned duo. "Bayonets" is the opening track off Bricolage and while it lacks the fuzz, it more than makes up in highly upbeat Euro-sounding pop. More specifically, Bricolage hails from Glasgow and their sound can not only be likened [...]
