Lest any of you think my pining away this week for a real brick and mortar version of The Vinyl District was some Yoko Ono-like 'wish poem'...well, you're only partly right. Some interesting offers did come our way, although all best seized upon when the thing actually exists. But I don't need this to happen today or tomorrow. Or next week or next month. Longer range is fine. While I in fact hone the meter to that wish poem. [...]

Words: Jodi Root | Photo: Clayton Huack Maps and Atlases served as the perfect bait to lure me to my most (and quite frankly, only) anticipated field trip into Chicago's Lincoln Park – the city's newest venue, Lincoln Hall . While Maps & Atlases put on an incredible, entertaining set– thanks to Muzzle of Bees contributing Champaign writer Jon Stone, we already knew that . Instead of repeating his previous praise, I'd like instead to focus on the highlights (and there are many) [...]

It's not like we need another group with the word maps in their name, but Maps , from the UK, produce dreamy and driving electronica that soothes the soul and is well worth your listening time. Their latest effort, Turning The Mind , is an album full of soaring synths mixed with breathy vocals and dynamic melodies. Some songs, like Papercuts , have a barely there sound, while others, like Love Will Come and I Dream of Crystal have strong melodies and plenty of hooks. The two Maps [...]

TomTom has released version 1.2 of its TomTom U.S. & Canada turn-by-turn navigation application, adding support for the iPod touch and original iPhone. The inclusion of iPod touch and iPhone support means the application can now be used on those devices when connected to third-party GPS solutions, such as the TomTom Car Kit . Other improvements include improved search and route summary screens, updated maps and points of interest databases, an updated IQ Routes database, Advanced Lane Guidance in both portrait and landscape modes, Text-to-speech in English, French, and [...]

Hey everyone, Nokia's giving away over $10,000 worth of vouchers for General Pants, Sportsgirl, Incu, Lucid Laundry as well as enough movie vouchers for you to see Twilight like 7 times. All you need to do is click here and register ! I know what you're thinking, nothing comes for free right? Well that's where you're wrong. Take it from us, people think competitions are impossible to win. They assume everyone else will enter when in reality no one does. Except this one guy who wins every competition because he knows no one else will enter. [...]

There's nothing quite like a good, old fashioned zombie apocalypse to force a disparate band of strangers to work together for their common survival. Building upon that foundation, Left 4 Dead 2 emerges as a bigger, more diverse and comprehensive package than the original. Left 4 Dead 2 follows the bloody struggle of four random strangers as they fend off an undead horde and a few new super-zombies. Over the course of five campaigns, a new cast of survivors treks from Savannah, Georgia, all the way to New Orleans, Louisiana. Armed with new melee weapons and a bigger [...]

By Jon Stone | @jwstone Over the weekend I saw three shows in Champaign-Urbana. Each show was a good show-great even. But wow, were they different experiences. This disparateness is one of the things that makes thinking and writing about music appealing: parsing through the musical experience looking for clues and connections of their quality with our resulting affinity. My goal here is to review each of these shows but also make a larger argument (that includes some theorizing-sorry: academic alert) about why it is we like the music we do and what [...]

"Ogni canzone è ancora così eccitante" Intervista ai Girls Ormai è un anno che seguiamo ogni passo dei Girls , da quando siamo stati travolti da quella gioia pura che è Lust For Life . Music brag NME has crowned The Strokes' debut album 'This is It' as the best album of the decade. As the naughties come to a close NME (and a long list of music experts) voted for what they thought are the best 100 albums of the decade. With the concluding list spanning artists from Jay-Z to Johnny Cash and a few unexpected ones in between. The New York rockers beat off the likes of Primal Scream's 'XTRMNR' and 'Up The Bracket' by The Libertines to take the holy grail. Mike Skinner must be [...]

Music brag NME has crowned The Strokes' debut album 'This is It' as the best album of the decade. If that isn't enough encouragement for the boys to get cracking with their next album release then I don't know what is. ¡Carlos, I'm Pregnant! , "Etta James" Yeah, I realize that I live about 750 miles away from this show (thanks, Google Maps!), but I wanted to post the flyer for those of you back in the DC/Virginia area. As you might know, I'm a huge fan of ¡Carlos, I'm Pregnant! , and the fact that I don't live near them anymore doesn't change that. So if you happen to live, oh, let's say at least 90% closer to Fredericksburg than I [...]
Welcome to the new, not-really-improved BabyStew This Week In Chicago listing. What's new about it, you ask? Absolutely nothing, except that it now covers the week from Monday through Sunday rather than Sunday through Saturday. It always seemed weird to me not to be listing Sunday shows until the morning of – when not many people are reading blogs – for the sole purpose of sticking with the conventional definition of "week" ( i.e. , Sun-Sat). But convention be damned. So here's what's going on in Chicago this "week". [...]
