Does video art sap the life right out of musical lyricism, stifling imagination? I begin today's Radio Dick with my simplistic and probably naive assertion that one ought to still read words and not dive too heavily into visual culture. My thoughts have been weighing pretty heavily on this idea lately; my 9th grade class is moving through Romeo and Juliet with me and I can't help but notice the dwindling patience with the text, the lack of analysis without strong coaching from my end with visual stimuli. The largely thematic aspects of the play still garner interest, [...]
Hey, we saw Justin Townes Earle (name must be written in full) a few months ago parading around the East Village with Jason Isbell (formerly of the Drive By Truckers.) He looked like the above song "Mama's Eyes" sounds -- dark and raw. One of our many motos here at Stark is "that's what we expect out our artists --" not to be too sadistic, but we want our favorites to be drunks, disturbed, do drugs, have promiscuous sex, over extend their welcomes (insert Wild Yaks' drummer at After The Jump here) -- it [...]

Andy Willsher My trip to London last May yielded no shortage of fond and lasting memories, but one of the most vivid is also one of the most unremarkable and inexplicable. My plan for my first visit to the city was pretty much to pick a particular district or two for each day I was there and just wander - one day, the West End, the next day, Soho, Covent Garden and Westminster, the day after, the East End and Greenwich. Greenwich wasn't a place I had any particular prior affinity for, but I [...]

After I first heard about your band and started playing the only song I owned of yours – Midnight - in my car and in parties (and everywhere), people here in the States always said two things: they asked who you were, and they said you sound like the Californian ska band Sublime. But how would you describe your sound? Experimental Tropical Pop. How and when did you guys meet? We've know each other for decades because we [...]

Though their records are some of the most cutting edge stuff coming out these days, Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup are techno atavists. This is easy to guess just from hearing their music: Kassem Mosse's tracks have the dusty, rough edged feel of an all-analog set-up, while Mix Mup's material is consistently raw and clangy, with his own New Wave vocals giving it all a charming whiff of throw-back. Of the all the musical sentiments the two producers share, one of the most potent is their longing for a time (namely, the 90's) when nightclubs provided an outlet for more [...]
So I thought it might be fun, being in the Halloween season and all to hit up a midnight screening of Paranormal Activity, hyped up to be one of the scariest movies in a while, I left wanting a refund. This film is all hype and no delivery. Its starts off slow and kinda makes you want to vommit with the stupid hand held camera style, fyi we get it, you want it to look real, but no one enjoys
Gregory "Smokey" Hormel is Americana. His work can be found on just about every influential record in the world of folk/country inspired rock of the past two decades. From Beck to Johnny Cash even up to Leonard Cohen, Hormel's sound is in high demand, and not just for other musicians, but for movies and TV shows as well. He's made his way into our pop culture and it's hard to avoid. As expected when Hormel makes a record, the folk/country/freak world stops and listens. On his latest cut, Smokey's Secret Family , he ventures into the world of [...]
Jacket Copy interviews Michael Chabon about his new essay collection, Manhood for Amateurs . JC: It's kind of stunning to anyone who's ever tried to write that you and Ayelet have four kids and you both actually finish books. What's your routine? How do you make space to craft your work? MC: Thank God school was invented. I don't know what we would do if it hadn't been. We send them away every day. They leave the house -- we drive them to school, and then [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Libba Bray's novel Going Bovine , a modern day Don Quixote tale, hurtles through time and space with self-effacing humor. Mad cow disease, string theory, punk fairies, and animated lawn gnomes, combine with Bray's storytelling genius to produce one of the year's funniest and most surprisingly moving books. Catch Libba Bray reading (with Lev Grossman ) at the first edition of the Largehearted Lit reading series on [...]

Buddhist monks blessing the crowd in the wee hours of the morn. For the Bon Iver preformance review jump to where is says BON IVER. So I think everyone has a little Goth in them and why not? I mean there is darkness all around in the media in our daily lives in general. Justin Vernon must have a little more than the average Cure fan. Look at his lyrics: "Only love is all maroon Lapping lakes like leery loons Leaving rope [...]
The Road Based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, John Hillcoat's The Road is bleak look at a world on the brink. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, a father (Viggo Mortensen) and son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) struggle to survive by any means necessary. As duo travel aimlessly day to day, they encounter various individuals (Robert Duvall, Michael K. Williams, etc) that will ultimately blur the lines between good and evil even further. As weird as it may sound, I always find stories about the decay of society fascinating. The [...]
In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Tao Lin's novella Shoplifting from American Apparel is uniquely sad, funny, and understated in all the right ways. In his most autobiographical work yet, Tao Lin has once again created a book that will polarize ctitics, but reward his fans. At the Bookslut blog , Michael Schaub wrote of the book: "I'll just say it's somehow both the funniest and the [...]

It had seemed like an ideal situation: reasonable rent, near the campus, well-furnished. It had only a few drawbacks, including a relative lack of privacy, since it was just a room in some lady's house, and the fact that the lady seemed a bit odd. She was in her late fifties, he thought, and there wasn't anything he could put his finger on, but her whole attitude seemed just a little off-kilter, as though she was concerned about things most people quietly ignored. Near the end of his first visit, for example, she had asked, out of the blue and [...]

Photos by Sam Gurry Calvin Johnson brought his distinctive voice back to Philly last Saturday where he played a solid set at Danger Danger Gallery . He hasn't been in these parts since he last played the Barbary in April with a whole slew of K Records bands. The man proves you don't need to be an indie -'Cool Dad' once you hit 40....although, the fact that he's [...]

The best posts on this site are the ones that piss people off. At least those are the ones that I find the most interesting, and that tend to have longevity in terms of drawing readers and comments. Like my " Best Indie Albums Ever " post that still pisses off hundreds of readers a week. That post was a poll-I asked you all to vote and published the results. This post is not, but I'd love to read your comments. I'm sure many people will say Jay-Z is overrated, but i just can't agree. Dude has mad variety in [...]
