CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

Though radio has suffered some serious blows in the past few weeks, many Boston stations are still alive and kicking. Sometimes its hard to remember, but way back in the day, before Last.fm, blogs, MySpace, Pandora and the like, real life DJs were primary sources for finding new music. While some commercial stations spam our brains with ads for used cars, credit reports and the occasional male enhancement supplement, there are still a lot of "good guys" out there who are on the radio because they love sharing new music with whoever will listen. So, to highlight [...]

"I'll take fate, I'll take fate on a day by day basis. I will not wait, I will not wait for what the world may not create." - Mieka Pauley, "Fate Day By Day" A lot of people claim to have had a hard life. Their parents scarred them emotionally or they lost a close member of their family at a young age or they become middle-aged un-employees, etc. But very few people (that I know) have had all of those things [...]

Charlotte, NC: a city known for its banks and not its music scene. Charlotte is the second largest banking town in the US, yet the music/arts scene leaves true music fans in want, a wasteland of suits and ties. Music festivals are virtually non-existent here; though, the great thing about the desert is the opportunity for an oasis. FemmeFest '09 was just that. This is the second go-around for the event, as 2008 started it off. Think grass-roots Lilith Fair meets New South with (truly) indie folk and rock. In this [...]
Times Square pedestrian mall ( bearfuz ) "Just in time for Memorial Day and tourist season, Broadway has been closed to vehicle traffic in Times Square and also in Herald Square. Traffic is diverted to 7th or 6th Avenue or the cross streets, and pedestrians can wander about or lounge on folding chairs scattered around. I'll be interested to see how this works out. " [ bearfuz ] tonight in NYC * DANCE * Les Paul @ Iridium [...]
"The future is not set. There is no fate but what we make for ourselves." - Sarah Connor, from Terminator 2 I recently had the pleasure of seeing the latest installment in the Terminator series, Terminator: Salvation. In short, it rocked. In slightly less short, it was a fantastic movie if you want nothing more than solid action sequences, a great movie if you love technological warfare and can tolerate Christian Bale's Batman voice, and a good-but-kind-of-annoyingly-di sappointing movie if you're trying to follow the plot's drastic timeline shifts from the first Terminator until now. The Boston Globe reviews Arthur Phillips' novel, The Song Is You . For the first two-thirds of "The Song Is You," I kept thinking that if I had an iPod and a Y chromosome, I would understand and love this book, that I would glide over its pages instead of slogging through it with an ever-changing mix of appreciation, exasperation, and just plain perplexity. But by the end, I'd surrendered to its slow and sneaky pace, its oblique eroticism, its self-conscious but undeniable cleverness, and, yes, [...]
