It's not often one gets to see four exceedingly talented and versatile musicians play together on one stage, which is why I tried to absorb as many details from the night as possible. With so much backlogged material between the lot of them, I should have figured the setlist would be on steroids, but I certainly wasn't expecting three hours of non-stop music. Conor Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward, and Mike Mogis not only played Monsters of Folk tunes, but they also shared aspects of their solo efforts. The evening [...]

So many great choices for Thursday. You could start at Toad for the early part of the night and see uke master Melvern Taylor. Afterwards there are many venues that have great line-ups. Gordon Gano, yup the guy from the Violent Femmes, and his his new band is at the Middle East with Sidewalk Driver and Mascara. Also on Thursday there's the Lovewhip cd release at Church or go to TTs for John Powhida International Airport, Logan 5 and the Runners, Weisstronauts and Mercy James (great local line-up!). On Friday, I'll Be at Precinct to see My Own Worst Enemy, [...]
![[Reggae Rock] B-Liminal – Representing Florida’s ‘Shore Culture’](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2117405_lg.jpg)
Ok. California , I have to give it to you. Over the past years you have produced many "shore music" artists along the west coast including big names like Sublime and Jack Johnson . And while I am happy for you and your artists, Florida has a big surprise for you! Meet the guys of B-Liminal, emerging from the very heart of South Florida. With their energetic live performances and perfected formula of combining elements of Reggae, Surf, and a little bit of rock, they have rapidly taken over Florida with their warm possitive [...]

By Jodi Root There's no question that Ryan is the go-to-guy for all things repping the Wisco music scene, and I like to think I know a thing or two about the Chicago vicinity, but it seems our Midwest sister metropolis Minneapolis seems to get left in the waste side time and time again. Up and coming indie rockers We Became Actors hail from the land up north, and just because it might get a little colder up there around this time of year, it's no reason to overlook their approaching heat in the [...]

Zowie, another great weekend of music with lots of choices. On Thursday, unfortunately the UK band, Heavy scheduled to play at Great Scotts has cancelled their tour so if you were planning on checking them out, sorry. But don't fret, there's an awesome show at the Lizard with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquints, the Rudds and Brett Rosenberg. Friday starts a big weekend for the Plough and Stars which is celebrating its 40th Anniversary with a plethora of bands playing and it's free! Friday night has Andrea Gillis , The Family Jewels and others at the Plough. If that's not [...]

Your local triple-A format radio station's favorite of this year's supergroup explosion stopped by 30 Rock last night. That's M. Ward, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and Yim Yames, singing "Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.)," the minor key harp and soul track from Monsters Of Folk's self-titled debut. As has been the case on tour, Centro-matic's Will Johnson is sitting behind the drums, although M.O.F. had an extra-extra special beat maker last night in ?uestlove, and the rest of the most fab Roots crew, who together made what was a simple supergroup into something like a preview of a Rock & Roll [...]

![Monsters of Folk & Teen Wolf [Chicago Concert Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2097731_lg.jpg)
I had a friend named Prick Lachey who used to leave me voicemail messages from late night bars where he'd scream into the phone, "MmmmmmBEST DAY OF MY LIFE!" Those words pretty much sum up my Monsters of Folk experience. Pretty strong words considering Ticketmaster took a metaphoric dump on my head with close to $30 in meaningless charges for 2 tickets. Still trying to figure out how they enhance my concert experience. Despite that, I can't say enough good things about the show. It was held at the beautiful Auditorium Theatre in the heart of [...]

When Iain Pettifer (guitars) and Rebekah Raa (vocals/keys) first met in maths class they were wearing exactly the same clothes and quickly coupled over a mutual appreciation of introverted, romantic guitar music; not to mention a palpable sense of detachment from the cool kids. Rebekah spent her entire student loan on a guitar and 8 track recorder while Iain educated her with his extensive music collection including of a full set of Twisted Nerve 7"s and the complete works of Richard Hell. Soon joined by Kit Godfrey (drums) and Mike Hyland (bass), our heroes holed themselves up for hours on [...]

![Show Recap: Monsters of Folk [Auditorium Theatre, Chicago, 10/30/09]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2092288_lg.jpg)
If you read my review of the Monsters of Folk album a few weeks back, then you'll know a couple things. First, that I really respect all the members of this band, from Oberst to Ward to James to Mogis. From Bright Eyes to My Morning Jacket and just plain M. Ward, everybody's an exceptional talent, and that's why Monsters of Folk is technically a supergroup. Now you would also gather from my review of their self-titled debut that while I thought the songs were pretty good and it was an admirable effort, there were too many tracks and a [...]

The long slide into irrelevance for the Philadelphia Phillies between 1995 and 2005 coincided with some historically great teams for the Seattle Mariners, who had been my favorite American League squad since the early '90s. As a result, I ended up following the Mariners as much or even more than the Phillies, especially during the 2000 and 2001 playoff seasons for the M's, the great post-Griffey, post-ARod, post-Randy Johnson teams that stunned the world by winning the most games in one season in baseball history (116) in 2001. Edgar Martinez had become my favorite player of all-time (surpassing Michael Jack [...]

The NBA Season is still young and TSS is keeping the ball in play. We hit you off with the West , now it's time to bicker about the Eastern Conference Standings. The East is has a top heavy talent pool but it's full of compelling storylines that'll keep you tuned in. The Celtics are back, healthy and ready for another run at the chip. Meanwhile LBJ is still climbing for the mountain top while Orlando knows what it takes to get there. But screw all that serious stuff. Gilbert Arenas is back ladies and gentlemen. Who knows what [...]

By DL and FP. FRIDAY Denton VS Dallas: DJ G / Yeah Def / OPS / Teamwork VS Sober / Killtron / Genova /Tommy L33 Jon3s (Hailey's): Man, I'm always up for a good "Dallas VS Denton" debate. Nothing more mature than that. Anyways, this is a good idea, and though I'd like to see the same concept executed with live bands, well, I actually wouldn't, since that's a little more lop-sided of a contest, unfortunately. (DL) [...]
