Originally I planned on writing an opus about this record. I was going to try to connect you to the record through my eyes and ears, talking about how the first listen it hit me like no other record this year. Praise the trio for following through on a premise so simple, so pure that you can't help but fall in love with the results. I mean, three successful, talented song writers revisiting timeless tracks that have been passed down from generation to generation (minus the two originals), recording in a garage with shitty gear in just a [...]

Old Canes is the solo project of Chris Crisci of Appleseed Cast. Feral Harmonic , out now on Saddle Creek Records, is his second album and first since Early Morning Hymns was released in 2004. The raw rhythm-driven folk on the album is passed through the same experimental filters that made Appleseed Cast so interesting with added traditional folk instrumentation. A short noisy instrumental intro opens the album, setting the tone for "Little Bird Courage" and its spirited acoustic strumming, scuttling drums, toy piano and triumphant trumpets by Kelly Hangauer of fellow Kansas band Fourth [...]
You know what it's like when you sweat blood, cry tears, shit yourself, shit tears of cry-blood and work really hard to make something fun and awesome? Well, here's the story of No More Strangers, a little Tomas the Tank Engine party that WinnieCooper.net started at a local bar. After having our slow clap moment, in the form of an awesome, packed to the walls local bands extravaganza on our night….we got bitchslapped. Bar owner greed, stupidity, poor advising, perhaps Satan, all collided and the No More Strangers crew were informed by the host bar that things were going to [...]

On "Little Bird Courage," the first proper song on Feral Harmonic , drums and guitar supply the feeling of a rickety track utilized at plus-maximum safe speeds with the result being difficult to disengage from. Feral Harmonic is adorned with cello, mandolin, banjo, trumpet, hammer dulcimer, and Chris Crisci's vocals which secure an immediacy throughout. Old Canes is the work of Chris Crisci (The Appleseed Cast), who wrote and recorded Feral Harmonic in his basement studio. On tour, he is joined by Kelly Hangauer (4th of July), Taylor Hollenbeck, Lucas Oswald (Minus [...]

The soulful rock sounds of the spacebar-defiant OldJack will finally be available to take home this Friday when they celebrate the release of their debut, UnionGlory , at Church. Singer Dan Nicklin, whose remarkable vocal chops are reminiscent of Joe Cocker (minus the drugged-out demeanor), gave Boston Band Crush the inside scoop: BBC: What's the story behind the name OldJack? Dan Nicklin: I was in the Abbey Lounge with my first guitar player (his name is Dom, but I call him Bagel). We had a few songs, were auditioning musicians (none [...]

10-7 Madison/Chicago/Detroit/Toront o It's the time in the tour when routine sets in. Wake. Shower. Coffee. Eat. Drive. Load. Wait. Soundcheck. Wait. Play. Wait. Drive to Hotel. Sleep. Repeat. We did have our first great show in Madison. An old two screen theater wherein one theater serves as a music venue with standing room in the front. It was the first show where we could let loose a bit—turn up the amps and feel confident about the set. The next morning I had to go to the Fed Ex to send a lot [...]

It's the welcome return of Jeff Larson. This time rather than just having America's Gerry Beckley do a few songs, the album is more of a mutual collaboration. The combination of Beckley's songwriting and Larson's sweet vocals are just magic together. The memorable adult contemporary songs are lead by the stellar "Heart of the Valley" - with a catchy hook and lovely Jeff Foskett outro. The collaboration of the Larson/Beckley vocal combo is best shared on the next track "Sudden Soldier" with a rich story and musical experience here. The albums theme is the myriad of stories wrapped [...]

Tae Rhee Seattle band Throw Me the Statue 's second album Creaturesque contains as many pure pop moments as their first, the wonderful Moonbeams , which contained one of my favorite songs of the decade, "About to Walk." Nothing on Creaturesque strikes me as immediately that excellent, but there are lots of nooks and crannies to get lost in on the album's alternately detailed and charmingly lo-fi production. After a tiny slump with their Purpleface EP, it is great to hear Throw [...]
It's an old discussion.... Actors turned music artists. First reaction is usually that of an eye roll, followed by a finger to the mouth when the music is actually heard. Not sure why a) they feel the need to do this or b) when they do, it's almost always a steaming pile of turds. Is it because actors live in an isolated world of ego-pumping make-believe where they are told every move they make, every fart they send into our atmosphere, is a precious act of godliness that is to be worshipped and recorded in our blogs [...]
Indie rockers-turned-kids-music-mast ers They Might Be Giants face an interesting dilemma when go on tour, and by extension, appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday. Do they play for the kids or for the adults? Usually, bands draw from their current release, which in this case is the wildly entertaining children's album/DVD Here Comes Science , currently on high rotation with my rugrats. Competing against that is the 20th anniversary of the (recently certified platinum) album Flood [...]

Director : Jon Amiel Release Date : 25 September Review by Tara Judah Not long after the opening credits some words appear onscreen informing the viewer (and in my case to much dismay) that what follows will not be about Darwin's life work and scientific findings as laid out in On The Origin of Species (1859), rather the story that follows (and for a film about a scientist it is, perhaps ironically, more grounded in story than information) will explicate "how it came to be written". [...]

It was another eclectic month of music listening here in September, with a wider selection and a greater number of discs spun. Starting in August , I decided to keep track of every album I listened to in its entirety. The rules: Only an album heard in its entirety, even if it is spread over several days, will count. Repeat spins, partial listens, EPs, singles and background music don't count. This had to be active listening of a full album. I could listen in the car, at home, at work or even on headphones while mowing the lawn. Every [...]
It is hard to imagine someone lovingly crafting an oral history of EMI or Capitol Records, or any major label, for that matter. But with Merge Records it makes perfect sense. The label is staunchly independent, run by two people from an actual band, and ihas released some of the most beloved indie rock albums of the last 15 years. Major labels are often the target of derision, but Merge has long been a target of devotion. Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records, the Indie Label that Got Big [...]

I must apologize for the amount of time I spent transcribing this interview, but this found itself to be one of the most difficult transcriptions I have ever done and I contemplated not bothering. However, Little Brazil is a fantastic band and there were some really great answers provided in this interview that I couldn't allow it to just get buried. At this point, I'm sure you're wondering what happened. Little Brazil 's guitarist Greg Edds and I left the venue in search of a quiet spot to conduct [...]
