Photo by Joe Mangat . Well, after a trip up to Portland, Oregon and a bout with a still-lingering illness, I'm finally back up in this. Perfect timing too, because there's a lot goin' on right now. Most notably, you can now stream a song from the most exciting effort still waiting to see an official release this year - Animal Collective 's Fall Be Kind . "Graze" opens this stunning EP with a languid interplay of sounds and soaring vocal trade-off between Avey Tare and Panda Bear before transforming into [...]

We're getting to that point in the year where new music releases pretty much slow down to a crawl, which is why I'm pretty excited that December will be upon us soon and I can spend that entire month talking about all the great stuff that has been released in the previous 11 months of the year. So as the new music gets sparser, I'm going to throw a couple random songs at you over the next couple weeks just to either keep you up on some great stuff I've enjoyed recently or just to gave some sort of content [...]

For a band often classified as alternative, Minus the Bear speaks in another musical language that makes it stand out. With electronics that are often set on live loop and time signatures that are complicated and create varying beats, the five-man troupe is one of a kind. There is no denying that they're off the beaten track. On Sunday, November 15th, Minus the Bear came to the Crazy Donkey, a bar and grill in Farmingdale, New York. Now, halfway through its tour, which consists of 25 shows in the course of only 31 days, the [...]

I have been loving the new song "Into The Mirror", one of the best songs they have put out in my opinion. "Broken China" is the second song off of their latest digital two song single being used to promote their new album coming out sometime in the very near future. Hopefully these two songs are a good inclination of what the rest of the album has to offer. Minus The Bear "Broken China" Related: New Minus the Bear "Into The Mirror" & [...]

Bear in Heaven recently received a sterling review on Pitchfork and it was pretty spot on. Layer upon layer of drone-y guitars, reminiscent of personal favorites A Place to Bury Strangers (minus the darkness), contribute to the expansiveness of Bear in Heaven. While tending to the abstract on some tracks, Wholehearted Mess is an absolute gem. Vocals float atop an ocean of sound that occasionally crests into massive choruses. Listening to Bear in Heaven is what I imagine Big Sky country out west sounding like if it was a hipster band. I'm going to say it one more time because [...]

Minus the Bear are preparing to release their fourth studio album in 2010. The album is yet untitled but they recently released a digital single for "Into the Mirror". The single sounds like a new wave remix of the Doors with an awkwardly placed female vocalist in the mix. Let it not be said that Minus the Bear is happy being complacent. The single's b-side "Broken China" is a little more Minus the Bear's traditional speed. The track is danceable and features the type of complex guitar work that has been their hallmark. [...]

I've always enjoyed Minus The Bear , and the band has a new recording coming out in 2010. I'm not 100% sure that this track is to be on the new album or not, but it is good nonetheless. Planet of Ice really deserved more recognition than it received in my own personal opinion. Producer Joe Chiccarelli (My Morning Jacket, White Stripes) is at the helm on this upcoming release. The band is currently on the tour with one of my favorite new bands Twin Tigers providing some opening tunes. I [...]

I was (still am) pretty bummed that I wasn't able to check out Minus The Bear this past week when they passed through Athens; as they are one of my personal favorites. Since I was unable to offer a concert review, the least I can do is share some new music from their 'Into the Mirror', 7". Take A Listen: Broken China from Minus The Bear Download: Broken China (Right click on link and select "Save Target As" in IE or "Save Link As" in Firefox) [...]
Monday, November 16, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: For weeks now I've seen a ton of comments about Google Wave, but until I saw this article yesterday I didn't know what people were actually doing with it. Pretty neat stuff. If any of you happen to have an invite I'd love one. Thanks! Why didn't anyone tell me that Minus The Bear recently put out a two song single? Is it because one of the tracks is borderline dance pop and you [...]

The third installment of A Retrospective, this time the focus is on 2002. The year of rebuilding, so to speak. It was the year I discovered Cider Jack (and did so plentifully) at the local Pullman bar Rico's, and we all would rehearse Bill Brasky skits (from the SNL spots, and made up on the spot) as twenty feet away the university jazz combo performed excellent renditions of Van Morrison's "Moondance" and various Motown favorites. As we see every year, 2002 saw several real great releases. Here are my favorites. [...]
