by Bill Pearis Surfer Blood NIGHTTIME As I mentioned in that big post about Montreal bands at CMJ, The High Dials are among them and are just great live -- sort of country-tinged jangly shoegaze -- and they're impressive live. They play Lit Lounge at 10:15 and then Arlene's Grocery at 12:30AM. If you like Ride, The Byrds, or Brian Jonestown Massacre, you shouldn't [...]

Recommended Show: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009 CARPARK TENTH ANNIVERSARY PARTY @ CAMEO GALLERY 93 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $8, 8PM In just a few more hours CMJ will be over, and we can (mostly) forget about it for the 360 days or so. However, it appears that the wild and craziest day is still in front of us. I grabbed what I think is a good list of most day and night shows below--I will scour for my daily "day party" post just to make sure. Not only are there a shit load of [...]

This album has some really, really high points, and a couple of slightly sticky ones, but in general it's a really good listen and I am enjoying it. It falls pretty neatly into the area of 80s indie pastiche, alongside bands like My Teenage Stride and the Shout Out Louds. There's plenty of the Smiths at times, for example, but the most obvious influence in this record seems to be Pulp, whose sound is absolutely all over it. I Pretend She's You sounds for all the world like Babies - not a copy exactly, more like a kid [...]

Recommended Show(s): WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2009 TERRORBIRD DAY PARTY & KANINE RECORDS SHOWCASE @ CAKE SHOP 152 Ludlow Street Manhattan, NY 10002 Free/$8, Noon/7PM For tomorrow's CMJ lineup, just plant yourself down at the Cake Shop. Why bother to leave? The day show is put on by Terrorbird and features performances from The Black Hollies, Darlings, ZAZA, and more. Kanine Records takes over the space at night and brings Surfer Blood, Drink Up Buttercup, Dinowalrus, and more! The Terrobird party is free, but the Kanine Records show will set you back $8 unless you have a [...]

The band that had the most impact at Indietracks 2009, to these eyes and ears at least, was The Specific Heats. Their set in the packed church was delayed when their reverb unit rebelled against the UK voltage and caught fire in protest, filling the stage with smoke. Once the offending unit was removed, the band, in matching capes, played a spectacularly energetic set of 60s garage-influenced indiepop, with guitarist/singer Mat's leaps and keyboardist Marisa (ex-Besties) head shaking a particularly fine sight. The Specific Heats began in Boston as a development of a solo project by Matt [...]

It is always fun when a band has a thought out path for their music. The Very Most has 3 Ep's out this year each appropriately titled for the season of release. Spring, Summer, Autumn. All the songs on these EP's correspond accordingly to the season. Autumn which was just recently released has the feel of excitement and anticipation but still has the undertone of something more ominous could possibly be just around the corner. Lets hope winter will be just as delightful! The Very Most - Autumn Air [...]

by Bill Pearis DOWNLOAD : Blue Jungle - Here We Go Again (MP3) Blue Jungle One could easily imagine L.A.'s Blue Jungle on the same bill as Thee Oh Sees , with their reverbed-out sound but instead they're playing Cameo Gallery tonight (10/8). Blue Jungle seem more inspired by mid-80s goth indie (Siouxsie, The Fall [yes they were], Lick the Tins) than girl groups or the [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

Recommended Show: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2009 CORN MO @ BRUAR FALLS 245 Grand Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $6, 8PM Corn Mo is listed as a "special guest" on this show. Who knows what that means? To be honest, I'm not exactly sure, but considering Corn Mo has been performing mostly with his band, .357 Lover, these days, it could be a rare solo treat. Oh course, he could just be the MC; however, The Choke are headlining the bill, and that's also something to look forward to. Lonnie Walker @ Pianos [...]

DOWNLOAD: Raise High the Roof Beam - "The Adventures of Hamza" (MP3) DOWNLOAD: Raise High the Roof Beam - "Ancestors" (MP3) Chicago's Raise High the Roof Beam are making their NYC debut tomorrow night with a show at the Cake Shop. The band is touring behind their new EP "The Majestic Beast of the Flatlands" which they released earlier this year. The Chicago Tribune said that the band's " looseness builds and congeals into romantic, driving choruses with a lot of shimmery [...]

After an intense week of gigging, we're left with a much more manageable calendar...until CMJ! Never ones to sit around and twiddle our thumbs, this weekend's plan is to go hard tonight with Annie Mac and then rock out tomorrow with The Jaguar Club in the Lower East Side's Cake Shop . The Jaguar Club will be joined by My Teenage Stride , pow wow! and Raise High The Roof Beam , all bands sure to be making a splash at CMJ a few weeks away. Stop by the [...]
