CHARLIE ALEX MARCH TO RELEASE DEBUT LP HOME/HIDDEN ON LO RECORDINGS FIRST SONG " CORTOT NO 6 " AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD UK artist/composer Charlie Alex March is pleased to announce the release of his debut album, Home/Hidden, with Lo Recordings. Home/Hidden, set for release in the US on February 16, is a wonderfully melodic and satisfying affair, gloriously English in a non-sniffy manner, like tea and crumpets or a stroll on an autumn day. Remarkably focused and mature, it's eclectic mixture of real strings, treated piano and all manner of electronic keyboards create a surprisingly [...]

People unveiled its Top 15 Sexiest Men Alive today (led by Johnny Depp, sooo boring a choice—what, were Brad Pitt and George Clooney busy?) and a few pop stars made the list. But they aren't exactly who we would've selected: John Legend (should have been Robin Thicke) No offense to Mr. Legend, who is as cute as a cuddly button, but we're still drooling over Robin's "Sex Therapy" video . When Legend makes a music video that incorporates chocolate [...]

Kings Of Convenience Declaration Of Dependence Astralwerks Records [2009] Fire Note Says: Hush is their style - Quiet is their magic! Album Review: There is something so simple about Kings Of Convenience approach to music but something so complex about their execution. It is their modern day Simon & Garfunkel style that will draw even the most casual listener into their hush tones and minimal instrument support. Considering [...]

After meeting Will Stratton you have to hope that the old saying, "nice guys finish last", is complete and utter garbage. Stratton is the very definition of nice, a cordial young fellow willing to talk to any and all who approach him after a show and it helps that his music is so easy to fall for. With his subtle voice and terrific guitar strumming, Stratton has begun to establish himself as a singer/songwriter for a new generation of indie fans. Earlier this summer we saw Stratton perform acoustic in Prospect Park and it [...]

So I saw the HBO Pay-Per-View of Pacquiao VS Cotto Firepower and it was certainly worth the paying for. It lasted 12 rounds and obviously Manny Pacquiao won. Damn, Cotto was bigger but Pacman just got the rhythm and the moves. "Manny Pacquiao is the saviour of world boxing. He is at present the pound-for-pound boxing king," (Time Magazine) and now that he won against Cotto, he's the ONLY 7 time world champion in different weights divisions. What more do I need to say? Back to main topic, I think it's [...]
You may have read about the next installment of Beck's Record Club - taking on the odd & obscure classic album Oar by Skip Spence and recruting help from Wilco, Feist and Jamie Lidell to do it. Spence, for those of you unfamiliar with him, was a founding member of Moby Grape and one time drummer for Jefferson Airplane. He often gets lumped in to the small group of mysterious, puzzling, creative geniuses like [...]
Following his quiet stunner of a debut album, this 22-year-old folk artist just proved that lightning, indeed, can strike the same place twice. When the 19-year-old Will Stratton released his debut album What the Night Said back in 2007, few would've guessed that this tenderfooted Nick Drake acolyte would amount to much of anything. After all, how many "next big thing" folk artists have come and gone in the past decade alone, much less ones that weren't even of proper drinking age at the time? Yet, against all odds, What the Night Said worked, and spectacularly so. Even...
Soundcheck is a bi-weekly(ish) concert guide featuring local Denver bands accompanied by a custom audio stream which will allow you to hear the bands before they play their show, similar to a live soundcheck (get it?!?!). It's been a while since I've had the time to curate this column. Soundcheck was popular when it debuted and I felt like I was getting back to the roots of this website, which is to contribute to the already lively arts scene we have here in Denver. Unfortunately, not long [...]

It was all too easy to miss Will Stratton in 2007, as I found recently. I hadn't heard a thing about the guy before a couple weeks ago when I had the opportunity to listen to his superb sophomore effort - No Wonder . Being impressed, I tracked down his 07 debut - What the Night Said (which was - astonishingly - recorded just after his senior year in high school) - and then wondered why much more hadn't been said about this talented singer/songwriter over the past couple years. It's easy to name-drop just about everyone [...]

Ola Podrida is the work of Texas resident David Wingo. Belly Of The Lion is his second album and follows his very well received self titled debut of 2007. It is released tomorrow. The album was primarily written and recorded in his apartment and is a superb collection of songs evoking atmospheric, restrained beauty that recalls Nick Drake or Iron & Wine. Poetic and rural, it brings a sense of
Will Stratton is a stunning singer-songwriter in the same vein as Nick Drake and Sufjan Stevens. His debut, What the Night Said , was written when he was just 19 (Sufjan Stevens makes an appearance on it). Now he's finally completed his followup, No Wonder, recorded between his classes at Bennington College. Dedication! Will's music has been called "disarmingly proficient" by NPR , "stirring and hyper-personal yet universally beautiful," by All Music and "pretty damn close to a straight-up masterpiece" by PopMatters . His new album, No Wonder, [...]

This week Drake gets nostalgic with a couple of releases from hometown heroes Nirvana , and dismisses the Oscar Wilde inspired solo project from Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas . (I guess all that sunshine isn't inspiring him to do his best work.) -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 11.03.09 We've officially moved into the gift-oriented release schedule, filled with deluxe reissues, box sets and other compilation/soundtracks to help (trick?) the average schmo get a gift for the music lover in their life. There's a couple [...]
