This week brings new albums by The Watson Twins (Talking to You, Talking to Me) and Yeasayer ( Odd Blood ) , but I am more excited by the new releases by singer-songwriters Gil Scott-Heron ( I'm New Here ) and Kath Bloom ( Thin Thin Line ) . Among the week's music releases, I can already strongly recommend Allison Moorer's Crows , Phantogram's Eyelid Movies , the incredibly soulful Georgia Anne Muldrow's Kings Ballad , [...]
Vuosi 2009 oli musiikin suhteen kaiken kaikkiaan laadukas. Parhaiden tuotosten listaamisessa ei ollut ongelmana sopivien ehdokkaiden löytäminen, vaan pikemminkin maratonikatsauksen välttäminen runsaan tarjonnan vuoksi. Listalle valikoitui lopulta monta loistavaa, miltei täydellistä suoritusta (mm.

A lot of bands have some good old Boston pride. We here at Boston Band Crush celebrate the local camaraderie and revelry by focusing our attention on our nearby rock 'n' rollers. We don't often have the chance to trumpet the virtues of national acts fighting the good fight unless they are specifically setting foot (and amp) in our fair city. While Portland's (Oregon, that is) The Dimes have neither Boston origins nor a Boston visit on their calendar, they do have a very special relationship with our city of choice. Their latest work, [...]

N urse & Soldier's Marginalia is gentle, bewildered psych-pop from the partnership of Robertson Thacher (aka Bobby Matador of Oneida) and longtime collaborator Erica Fletcher. The two have been making music together since their teenage years, a long history reflected in the intimate nature of the music. Far more vulnerable and raw than Oneida, Nurse & Soldier sing about longing, betrayal and reconciliation; the sound of Marginalia is a confused murmur, as opposed to Oneida's punishing roar. The two multi-instrumentalists sing and play organs, guitars, synths, woodwinds, drums, and more. They are also joined by [...]

( BACK TO PART ONE ) Hell and High Water (1954, 103 minutes)(buy/ rent ) "I shall try my best to make you like me... as a scientist." A private consortium suspects that nuclear activity is occurring in on an island in the neutral waters of the North Pacific. They hire a mercenary WWII vet (Richard Widmark) to captain a submarine for a recon mission. Packed in the tin can are a full crew of sweaty men and one va-va-voomish French scientist. [...]

Jay Silverheels was one of the most famous and successful Canadian actors in the history of Hollywood. For decades, The Lone Ranger and his trusty sidekick Tonto were pop culture symbols as universally identifiable as Mickey Mouse. Although several different actors took their hand at portraying Tonto, none were as well known as Jay Silverheels. A Mohawk from Six Nations of the Grand River in Ohsweken just outside Brantford, Ontario, 1 Silverheels was born into poverty and literally fought his way out of it by becoming a middleweight boxer, placing well in Golden Glove competitions. [...]
The following is an interview with Heavy Jack, one of my favorite bands on T61. On July 15th, 2008, I met Heavy Jack. From the moment I heard their music I was seriously blown away. Not long after posting a comment on their wall I was even more amazed that thee seasoned musicians were so young yet performed with a solidity of an established band. I have never seen 20 wall posts on a band's 'wall' for just the first upload. The enthusiasm these guys generate through their hard driving music and grateful acknowledgment of [...]

As some of you may know, last week I started counting down my 20 favorite hip-hop albums ever with Kanye West's The College Dropout. Remember, I grew up on late 90's and early 00's music, so my hip-hop views are probably a lot more modern than a lot of "old school" hip-hop fans. Anyways, coming in at 19 we have Aesop Rock's Labor Days . For those of you who don't know him, Aesop Rock is probably one of the more successful and popular "underground" or "indie" rappers out there today. Steadily putting [...]
