photos by Lori Baily "How can it be that in the wake of the ten year absence of this band, there's really yet to be a front man as captivating, ferocious, unnerving and entertaining? Sure there's Matt Korvette of PISSED JEANS and Eugene from OXBOW as current torch bearers, and I'm not sure that the world needs another GG Allin . Actually, scratch that...I am sure we don't need another GG. But those bands can't hold a 5W bulb to the [...]

Ride The Frightening Grooms (née Muggabears) from Brooklyn create the kind of hedonistic fantasy grunge that Sonic Youth and Pavement did in their heyday, combining powerful, churning guitar lines and intelligent basslines merging blissfully in a mélange of shimmering, powdery drums and whiny adolescent vocals. 'Dreamsucker' is an immediate favourite, with its glistening guitar and bass interplay and intense, cacophonic spurts combed through with odd, whirring synth sirens in the background adding a tangible eerieness. Grooms is truly a hidden gem, a powerful force to be reckoned with. Currently on tour [...]

Most Likely To: synthesize 1980 with 2009 . The music of 1979-82 has cast a long shadow over the music of 2000-09. Neo-post-punkers have crawled out of the woodwork in numbers almost equal to the originals, with bands that nod to Joy Division, Gang of Four, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Wire grabbing the lion's share of critical and commercial attention. The combos with a (Howard) jones for the likes of the Human League, OMD, and Tubeway Army haven't received anywhere near as much love. Partly this is because the [...]

Noveller is the recording project of Sarah Lipstate. Lipstate, who has created music with One Umbrella, Parts & Labor, Sands, Cold Cave, Rhys Chatham, and Glenn Branca, is also a photographer and filmmaker. Not only the titles, but the sounds on her two albums released by No Fun Productions this year, Paint On The Shadows and Red Rainbows , exemplify the visual dimension that Lipstate introduces into her aural explorations and sound ontologies. The colors and textures Lipstate produces with looped guitar phrases bloom and swirl to generate a robust, moving visual landscape that coincides with her [...]

You had plenty of CMJ chances to see both Surf bands in NYC last week. In case you didn't, Surfer Blood is at Death By Audio tonight (10/26). It's a great bill with Parts and Labor, Small Black, and The Sundelles also playing. Surf City is at Market Hotel tonight. Also here last week, though not part of CMJ was the first-ever NYC-area appearances by The Trashmen , makers of the a famous tune called "Surfin' Bird ". They played [...]

Recommended Show: MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2009 HAR MAR SUPERSTAR @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG 66 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $12, 8PM Monday nights are often dull for shows in New York City, but tonight has some good ones (call it a post-CMJ effect). Parts and Labor will take to the stage at Death by Audio and Har Mat Superstar gets it on at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. It was a tough call between these two shows, but Har Mat edged out. Bang Bang Eche and My Jerusalem (both of whom could be recommended [...]
Hardcore CMJ attendees should be advised that the inclination to never ever see live music again will dissipate after a week or two. For those who aren't burnt out entirely, La Roux offers pretty ... Continue reading "Tonight! La Roux, Far, and Parts & Labor, If You're Up For Anything At All" >
Admittedly, all credit for this discovery goes to the amazing Amanda Ash (she actually is amazing, but I do also love alliteration). While catching up on her blog - The Indie Files - I came across some new material from Rae Spoon . Apparently, Rae has been spending some quality time in Berlin lately, and the fruits of his labor are starting to surface. He teamed up with Berlin sound man Alexandre DeCoupigny to create a beautifully bizarre and moving homage to the Berlin Underground that is equal parts Rae (folk [...]

Idolator are the latest internet publication to do the best of the decade list thing, but theirs comes with a sinister twist. In counting down F2K , Maura Johnston and Christopher R. Weingarten (ex-Parts and Labor, 1000 Times Yes , music journo extraordinaire) will be revisiting the 50 worst songs of the '00s. And if Brokencye's "Bree Bree" can only manage number 50, then this one is going to get really good, or bad, or really bad as in good. You know what I mean. F2K: Idolator Counts Down The 50 [...]

Cold Cave are a quartet by way of Philadelphia and New York, led by hardcore punk musician Wesley Eisold (American Nightmare/Some Girls/Give Up the Ghost). Rounding out the band are former members of Xiu Xiu, Parts and Labor, and Prurient. I've instantly fallen in love with Cold Cave's beautifully haunting synthpop. " Love Comes Close instantly sold out when it was released in August and will be re-issued by Matador on November 3rd. The warm, rich synth pop sounds are laced with equal parts of romance and nihilism. Cold Cave is possibly the only [...]

I must apologize for the amount of time I spent transcribing this interview, but this found itself to be one of the most difficult transcriptions I have ever done and I contemplated not bothering. However, Little Brazil is a fantastic band and there were some really great answers provided in this interview that I couldn't allow it to just get buried. At this point, I'm sure you're wondering what happened. Little Brazil 's guitarist Greg Edds and I left the venue in search of a quiet spot to conduct [...]
Gleich von zwei Projekten, die nach Soloanfängen mittlerweile zu vollwertigen Noisepop-Supergroups angewachsen sind, gibt es dieser Tage erfreuliche Neuigkeiten. Zunächst wären da Former Ghosts mit Freddie Ruppert (This Song Is A Mess But So Am I), Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) und Nika Danilova (Zola Jesus), deren Debüt Fleurs wird am 06.11. auf Upset! The Rhythm erscheinen. Zwei Songs davon gibt es schon mal zum Download, angesichts der beteiligten Stimmen ist das Ergebnis so intensiv wie man es erwartet hätte: [MP3] Former Ghosts - Hold On [MP3] [...]

(photos from the weeks that were upon returning) It's good to be back: - Hearing the phrase: "I'm a man's man" uttered in all seriousness. - Watching the yuppie guy walking along leaving a trail of food and wrappers behind him. - Watching an overweight mother eating the fries off her child's plate while the kid was distracted. - Sitting across from a woman at the airport and watching as she simultaneously made a ring of food and trash around her, grabbed and jerked her kid around, and talked on her cell phone. - [...]
