Promise and the Monster is a Stockholm folk-rock act with a surprisingly frigid style. Compared to Swedish sun-seekers such as Jens Lekman or Peter Bjorn and John, the band might as well hail from Antarctica. Its music, driven by the barbed, breathy vocals of Billie Lindahl, shifts between gothic chamber assaults ("Swim," spooky-girlfriend anthem "Dorothy") and gentler balladry, like the reverb-aided "Sibylle" and "Cory." It's evocative of Marissa Nadler's shadowy catalog as well as the darker sounds of Warpaint or Chelsea Wolfe, though Lindahl's multi-tracked harmonies manage to walk an intriguing line between edge and comfort. (The band also shares [...]

We all know I hate Best of Lists that come out before the year is over so nearly 4 weeks into 2012 I finally present my best albums of 2011! (Still a day faster than last year !) Below are the top 10 albums from my 2011 followed by 10 honorable mentions. The list was compiled by weighing total play counts along with longevity. Not only did I listen to it a lot, but was I still reaching for it months after the honeymoon phase. These are those albums. Since I can't be bothered to rank these [...]
![MIIKE SNOW AND LYKKE LI TEAM UP [STREAM]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4017317_lg.jpg)
Pop (borderline indie?) trio Miike Snow have teamed up with fellow Swede Lykke Li to bring us "Black Tin Box," another taste of what's to come from their forthcoming LP Happy To You , due out March 26th. No stranger to collaboration, Ms. Li has added her talents to plenty of other projects, including Bon Iver and Peter Bjorn and John , but her presence here is so wonderfully blended into the Miike Snow sound, you almost forget she's there. "Black Tin Box" begins with a minimalistic approach but quickly evolves into a more layered landscape that [...]

If you haven't drunkenly sung along to The Cranberries' "Linger," there's room for improvement in your life. With that being said, a Cranberries' comeback—although smirk-worthy—is probably a few years too late. As excited as some people claim to be, are you really looking forward to this? You saw the video right? It's not that we wouldn't love to see the Cranberries make an epic comeback. It's just highly unlikely. It's much more likely that you'll continue to love singing along to "Linger" when it randomly comes on the radio and that will be the extent of your relationship [...]

From the drugs and partying to the twisted relationships full of lies, deceit, and love, CW's Gossip Girl has found the ideal tracks to set the backdrop and atmosphere for the fast-pasted, [...]

Punks Jump Up are a modern-day dream team that came together a few years back while they were both living in London. The duo consists of Joe and David, who together possess a musical power that generates magic on track after track. 2011 was a milestone year for PJU. They released Chimes Pt. 1 to critical acclaim and remixed everyone from Housse de Racket to the Supermen Lovers. These uber stylish lads also found time to work with graphic designer Michael Willis on Stiff Couture , their clothing line that helps bros from all over the world [...]

Miike Snow is by far one of my favorite artists out there and with his latest track he raised the bar big time. Unfortunately all of our old Miike Snow posts disappeared once we switched over so I do apologize for you Miike Snow fans, but we will work to rebuild our library soon enough. Consider these two things: 1. coco morier is working Peter, Bjorn and John , Miike Snow , and Lykke Li on their new label INGRID. 2. coco morier has written songs for Britney Spears. This is a dangerous combination. Think Miike Snow, whose producers Bloodshy & Avant produced Spear's "Toxic." When you apply that sort of skill and pop mentality to a more edgy brand of pop, the results are beastly. It's like pop music for people who don't like the basic ass-ness that often goes hand in hand with [...]

Do you remember an incredibly young band that back in 1997 had some success in their homeland of Australia and some minor UK popularity with a bunch of highly strung youthful indie rock songs that referenced Bow Wow Wow, the B 52's and the Go-Go's? They had tunes called Just A Song About Ping Pong , Get What You Want and Leave It Alone and went by the name of Operator Please ? [...]

Yeah it's sort of late, you don't need to be a dick about it. Besides, it ain't official until we make it so! THE BEST OF 2011 JOEY GANTNER 1. Future Islands - On the Water (Thrill Jockey) 2. Bill Callahan - Apocalypse (Drag City) 3. Saviours - Death's Procession [...]

Up until compiling this list, I was pretty sure 2011 was not a fantastic year for music. Well, I may have been completely wrong. There might not have been giant releases from the most prominent artists of our generation, but this is only because there are no more prominent artists of our generation. The internet and availability of music has made anybody a contender for making a great record, and I believe it has become a complete toss up as to who makes a future classic in any given year. Relax, for this is a good thing. Here's my big [...]

I could've made this list twice as long but I capped it at 50. Most of these are actual singles. The rest should be. Beyond the top ten, ordering is fairly arbitrary. Metronomy - The Look ( MP3 | Video ) I first heard this song back in February and I have yet to tire of it. I wish the keyboard solo outro lasted forever. Exlovers - Blowing Kisses ( MP3 | Video ) Rocking shoegaze pop of the highest order. [...]

This is the second single off the synthy-electro dance band's latest album LIMO . Pretty Good Dance Moves is made up of the of Aaron Allietta and Jimmy Giannopoulos. Top 10 Releases of 2011 1. PJ Harvey - Let England Shake Polly Jean Harvey has been my favorite artist for almost 20 years (!), but I haven't felt this strongly about one of her albums in at least a decade - maybe even since 1995 and To Bring You My Love . Casting herself as an English patriot just to knock those ideals off their pedestal, Harvey uses discordant sounds, off-kilter rhythms, skewed stereotypes...and her tremendous vocal range to create a haunting, [...]
