Last month when Phil Lesh announced a run of Phil & Friends shows near Denver , Dead fans couldn't help but wonder about the future of Furthur . Ever since Jerry died, Lesh has had a fondness for changing things up every few years and Furthur has already lasted just about as long as any other post-Dead project involving Lesh. Apparently those fears were for naught as Furthur has just announced a Spring Tour that starts on April 5 at the Wang in Boston and finishes on April 18 after eight shows at the Beacon Theatre in NYC. Thank you to all of the current and past veterans out there today. It's a remarkable sacrifice you've made, and your efforts to protect and support the U.S. are appreciated. Across the world, we celebrate Armistice Day as well. Hopefully, we can move toward a global society that relies on diplomacy and not war to settle its disputes. As today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year of this new millenium, we're re-posting Blogophilia 11. So, if you havent already, download it and crank it to 11. Look for Friday's Free [...]

The Postmarks cover Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds" in HORRIFYING fashion. Ghostly, haunting lyrics with a creepy bassline make this one of the weirder listens in a while. Bob Marley's original is such a happy go-lucky anthem, and this sounds like it could be the soundtrack of some psychological thriller featuring a stuffed animal on a killing spree. Oddly captivating. And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]
That's not some clever clever 1970s title up there. That's actually a description of the music. Yes, this is a recording of four post office workers stamping postmarks onto letters while whistling along. And it's bloody great. A 1975 recording, I don't know whether it was improvised or whether this was a regular routine for these fellows, but it's fascinating hearing work music brought into the modern age. Univ. of Ghana Post Office - Canceling Stamps At The University Of Ghana Post Office (alternate [...]

Tuesday, May 31, 2011 Today's Quick Mention: A long holiday weekend means it shouldn't be too much of an issue for you to muster up enough energy to see the Twilight Singers and Margot And The Nuclear So And Sos at the Parish tonight, and then Peter, Bjorn And John at Antone's tomorrow. Have fun. As you may recall, Silver Swans first made an appearance here at SOTO a few weeks back via a nice track of theirs that had been remixed [...]

Ok...I'm a bit biased on this one. I know Ursula 1000 . Back in the 90's his band, 23, was one of the only bands in Miami that channelled Ride and wanted to be popstars. We were part of the scene that had no name...and had no fans. There were like ten of us who liked Britpop, indie pop and the like and we all kind of hung together. So much so that after I left Y&T Records, Alex (Ursula 1000) and I used to go over faxes every week from [...]

Re-imagined by Christopher Moll of The Postmarks, the original song "Secrets" carried a beautiful and subtle charming light that is turned towards another direction. The subdued bass and floating strumming is exchanged for fuzz reminiscent of souls lost in the void of radio airwaves. The drumming is a mourning beat that leads the saddening lyrics [...]

From San Francisco comes Silver Swans and the latest remix of their single Secrets, titled Secrets ( Number Stations Mix ). In the romantic city by the bay, band mates Ann Yu and Jon Waters are creating some dangerously sexy, between-the-sheets dream-pop for lovers of slow-burning lullabies. Fittingly compared to the likes of Chairlift and Ladytron, I'd like to add to that list the detached, sedated, allure of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and the creepy-sexy cool of Julee Cruise's dark, Twin Peaks-ian melodics. The latest Secrets remix by Christopher Moll of The Postmarks, feels like [...]

After a few weeks off, Undomondo Radio Show is back with #103 which starts of deep with Pleq and Gurun Gurun and continues into indie folk territory with a piece from Iron & Wine's new album and a Jim O'Rourke cover of Burt Bacharach, though not without a nod to the late Trish from Broadcast whom we lost earlier. The second part is more upbeat with funk from The Meters, an edit of Harry Miller's Family Affair, Curtis Mayfield and Orchestro Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou's new album after 20 years, soon to be released on Strut records . [...]
