The above is a mixture of tracks from the upcoming album from Red Sparowes , The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer out on April 6, 2010 on Sargent House Records. The Los Angeles based instrumental group is known for their immense and monstrous records (also known for their ridiculously long song titles) such as At The Soundless Dawn (2005) and Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun (2006). With only a few EP released in past few years, Red Sparowes returns and I can't wait to [...]

I thought I'd mix things up and get my best albums of the year 2009 out first then work backwards through what I listened to (According to Last.fm). I must say this was an amazing year for music and I plead with my friends who "cannot find anything new to listen to" that they just need to listen around, become an ear slut, do what you have to do to get into all this great music. Partly, this year for me has been a good one in music because I've been sitting at the computer so much after work [...]
Blood red and black the front cover on the CD would make an even better album cover: one to stare at over and over as you flip the vinyl getting stoned after school and engraving the head of the vulture into your Pee Chee notebook. Put on the headphones and step into their world. Its Homme, Grohl and, yes, John Paul Jones deciding to kick out some jams for you to listen to. It doesn't try to blow you out of the water from the first track, which is what you might think of from a [...]

We asked the folks behind Rontoms' ongoing Sunday series (Joe Bowden, Hannah Carlen, Matt King, Ron Toms) for their favorite gigs thus far. Red Fang, Black Elk, Black Eyes and Neckties (2/1/09) One of the heaviest shows at Rontoms got significantly heavier as Tom Glose of Black Elk puked on the stage, the bass cabinet, the microphone.... Dirty Mittens & Church (3/1/2009) The Dirty Mittens' third birthday show—arguably its best show to date. It was one of those magical shows where you want to introduce yourself to everyone around [...]

" Just East of Broadway " opens tonight in Toronto for a limited run at the Factory Theatre Main Stage. It's a music comedy written by Nick Hune-Brown (from the band Hooded Fang ) and Ben King. The music was written by Nick and Daniel Lee, also from Hooded Fang, with help from the Bicycles' Matt Beckett, Mika Posen ( Forest City Lovers , Timber Timbre ), Owen Norquay ( Clouds that Look Like Things ), and a bunch of other local musicians. The play was a hit at Toronto's 2009 Fringe Fest , and [...]

Local Music Pony is at home with fans of Red Fang It's been awhile since we trotted out Local News Pony, our lazily-Photoshopped mascot for lazily-assembled news roundup posts. Mount up, we ride at dawn! - - - Everyone seems to be buzzing about the new Red Fang album, so we dropped a line to head Fangster Aaron Beam as he waited at PDX for a flight to Nashville, where the record will be mixed. The as-of-yet-titled album was recorded at Type Foundry with Adam Selzer, [...]
And so we have reached a new decade, and if the first slate of new releases is any indication, it's going to be a damn good next 10 years. Quarter #1 of the music industry's 2010 includes releases from longtime indie staples and acclaimed newcomers, alt-folk male-female duos and weird ass virtual English projects, bands both finally releasing long overdue followups and much hyped debuts. The forthcoming batch of new music is overwhelming to say the least. Fortunately, as always, we got you covered. Below, you'll find an extensive and up-to-date listing of all this coming quarter's new [...]

2009 is a tough year to judge. I've checked out more albums this year than any year in the past. Well over 1,000. And there have been quite a few great ones as well. When this list began, it had 110 albums. I abandoned my top 33 and 1/3 for 45, and then said "screw it" and upped the number to an even 50. These are the top notch albums of the year, all worthy of praise. Despite trouble all around, 2009 wasn't all that bad. [...]

001 Sleepless – The Decemberists || So The Decemberists' new album came and went without the sizable dustcloud once left by The Crane Wife. But this hideaway track plucked from the Dark Was The Night charity album gripped me from the first. It has that terrifying power which can shatter that little piece of watered hope you're still clinging to. Devastating and unapologetic. [ purchase ] 002 Tiger Mountain Peasant Song – First Aid Kit covering Fleet Foxes || Feels like cheating to have a cover song in this list, but [...]

2009 was another great year for live music , slightly edging out last year for me with a grand total of 97 shows, in 26 different venues for 251 sets of music by 215 different bands, with 26 bands logging in 2 or more. Continuing to be one of the best live music venues anywhere, Johnny Brenda's topped the list with 25 visits. The other places where you could have found me hanging out this past year being World Cafe Live (15), The M Room (11), Kung Fu Necktie (7) and The Khyber , The [...]

Dylan, Etc's Top 40 Albums of 2009 Part 1: #21-40 2009 was the year of the three S's. Side projects, solo discs, and supergroups. While big names like Green Day, U2 and Pearl Jam released new material, more than ever artists found ways to break out of the usual 9-to-5. Everyone from the Strokes to the Red Hot Chili Peppers took the year off to let members pursue solo work while indie mainstays [...]
Many of the Top 10 tracks listed below, appeared earlier as part of I Rock Cleveland's Top 20 Albums of 2009 . There's "Watching the Planets," inter-stellar album closer on The Flaming Lips' Embryonic, and "Sea Within a Sea," the first single released from The Horrors' Primary Colours. It was the latter which first announced to the listening public that this band of horror punks from England may not be the flash in the pan we had all assumed they would be. Who knew they listened to kraut-rock, The Smiths, The Psychedelic Furs, and The Stone [...]
