Inevitably, a love of coverage leads to a constant, ever-vigilant search for thoughtful, well-crafted reinterpretation. I spend hours each week mining full albums for the hidden cover song, and scanning MySpace and email inbox for the promotional, the one-off acoustic in-studio radio track, and the otherwise unreleased singleton, and the endless discovery is eminently worth the pursuit. But there's no question that tribute albums are the cover lover's bread and butter. I gather these things in like truffles, and hold a special place for them in my heart and in my [...]

Madison Violet's new album No Fool For Trying was just released by True North Records. The Canadian duo has toured with Indigo Girls and Ron Sexsmith among others. Their music blends the soft harmonies of traditional and Appalachian folk with modern Americana instrumentation. The opener "The Ransom" has the sweet, high lonesome croon of Emmylou Harris or Gillian Welch. "The Small of My Heart" seemed repetitive at first, but it's a grower and is now my favorite track on the album. It's [...]

Kort na elkaar verschijnen twee interessante tributes. Het eerste is Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs Of Mark Mulcahy .

For The Music Magazine... Crazy Love is the fourth album from Canadian crooner Michael Bublé. As you might expect, it is packed with predictable cover versions, more brass than a Mark Ronson wet-dream and plenty of Bublés sleek vocal swagger. Collaborations are kept to a minimum with Sharon Jones and Ron Sexsmith; a smart and credible move, and the swing formula is rarely diluted, in spite of Bublé's attempt to add his own unique charm. Why expect anything else from a singer who continues to show everyone else how it is done? [...]

Website Colin McIntyre (AKA Mull Historical Society) appeared in the smaller performance room at the Rescue Rooms Nottingham on Friday Night. On first arriving i thought the attendance was going to break the record for the smallest gig i'd ever seen (23 people @ Ron Sexsmith), however eventually a crowd of about 40 people materialised. Support was from a local singer Will Jeffrey with a deep bluesy voice who included a nice cover of M Ward's Sad Sad Song in his set. Although previous gigs on the tour [...]
Someday someone can explain to us why Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah Slean doesn't have a U.S. label deal. Cabaret torch songs mix with theatrical, confessional adult pop for an accomplished sound that is both personal and sumptuously produced. We defy you to watch "Get Home", her heartwrenching video of a woman telling her lover to go back to his wife, without being at least a little moved by it all. We're going to follow up soon on her latest project Black Flowers , a collection of nine songs from Canadian writers (Leonard Cohen, Ron Sexsmith, [...]

It's been a long week, and I'm up against deadline on several fronts, trying to balance a professional review, impending midterms, and the creation of a virtual school tour with the usual package of parenting, teaching, school committee policymaking and the occasional nap. There's plenty of coverfolk in the hopper, and I'm aiming for a compendium this weekend to clear the decks a bit. But to tide us over, here's a repost from our very first month on the web, featuring Lucy Kaplansky , a singer-songwriter whose longing vocals and way with confessional [...]

Crap! In reading what other people had to say about Kevin Hearn & Thin Buckle's newest release, I discovered that I am one of the few people to really not like it. And actually, that's a bit of a lie – it's not that I don't like it, it's more that, to me anyway, it was just, well, meh. It's not bad but I just kept feeling that there should be something more. And I can't even say just what that "more" should be. The songs are well-written and produced – something which should be [...]
When the first season of your critically acclaimed Sundance Channel series managed to attract both Bill Clinton and Lou Reed as guests, it's hard to imagine topping that in season two. And yet, it looks like the new round of Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... shows is going to very high-wattage indeed. This year's marquee names are two of the biggest in rock: Bruce Springsteen and Bono . And the rest of the line-up is nothing to sneeze at either, including Sheryl Crow , Lyle Lovett , [...]

Whereas the 2002 Winter Olympics featured performances by Josh Groban, Charlotte Church, Sting, and R. Kelly, next year's events in Vancouver, B.C. will showcase a much less mainstream lineup (save for Wilco perhaps). Consequence of Sound reports that performers throughout the February 12-28 run include Broken Social Scene, K'Naan, Stars, Joel Plaskett, Steve Earle, Laurie Anderson, Martha Wainwright, Blue Rodeo, Iron & Wine, Corb Lund, Ron Sexsmith, Joan As Policewoman, and Sun Kil Moon. We're still awaiting more details on when/where this killer lineup will be performing, but we do have the deets on Wilco's set: [...]
In 2010, Vancouver will host the Winter Olympics, which makes sense, since it's always winter up there (seriously, it's probably not been over 30 degrees in 56 years*). Vancouver will also be hosting a trove of indie rockers, some from Canada, that will be performing at Olympic-sponsored events throughout the two week event. Among the confirmed acts are Wilco, Broken Social Scene, K'Naan, Iron & Wine, Sun Kil Moon, Stars, Joan as Police Woman, Steve Earle and Ron Sexsmith. The Olympics go down on Feb 12-Feb 28. Also, is Jamaica still trying to win [...]
Vancouver won't be the only thing Canada will be showing off when it hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics early next year. As it turns out, the country will also be showcasing its incredibly talented and diverse music scene throughout the Olympic's two+ week run, set to take place from February 12-28. Broken Social Scene, K'Naan, Stars, Matthew Good, Joel Plaskett, Steve Earle, Laurie Anderson, Martha Wainwright, Blue Rodeo, Iron & Wine, Corb Lund, Ron Sexsmith, Joan As Policewoman, and Sun Kil Moon are all confirmed to be performing in some capacity at an Olympics related event. This is an ever changing and (hopefully) expanding list of some of the songs I have mentioned before in this blog or simply stuff I have found somewhere on the web that I find interesting, but have no time to write about. All files have been found somewhere in cyberspace (and NONE of them have uploaded by me, so I cannot help you with any requests you might have - just keep returning and something new might pop up), so they will be available until the artists, record labels, fans, whatever decide to remove them. Thanks to a few readers, [...]
