By: David SchultzUsually it takes a couple decades before a band ends up in some version of someone's "Where Are They Now" column. Nowadays, when an act can be hyped up and inspire a backlash within a six month cycle, it's a less a "Where Are They Now?" and more of a "What Are They Up To?" Just three years ago, Pete Townshend became enamored with Colorado's Rose Hill Drive and on the heels of a

It's no secret that many of our readers have had plenty of spirited discussions over the last few months, or maybe years, discussing what classic album Phish would cover at the next Halloween show. The concept of this live "Musical Costume" was launched by Phish on Halloween in 1994 when they performed The Beatles White Album in its entirety. Errr, except Good Night which was played over the PA system. And while Phish has done it three additional times - and a fourth if you include Dark Side Of The Moon on November 2nd, 1998 in Utah - they have [...]

BOAT who are poised to release their third album Setting the Paces this week are like one of those new and improved products: Now better sounding and with more pop hooks! Not that the old version was inferior by any stretch of the imagination, and not to worry long-time fans, Boat is still Boat. The animal imagery, falsetto choruses, and sincere yet over the top delivery is all still there, only now it sounds so much better. Setting the Paces is like a rush of sugar to the head. The band is now officially a four piece [...]

This month's Uncut Magazine has a list of their 150 Greatest Albums of the 21st Century so far (i.e. the best ones of the decade or noughties or whatever), and so far I've been unable to locate the full list online. Therefore I'm going to take the time to type them all out for you, and maybe even provide a little review or opinion piece at the end. 150 - Band of Horses Everything All the Time 149 - Ray Lamontagne Trouble 148 - Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand [...]

The Lions In The Street are out of the courtroom and back on track playing good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll. Their self-titled full-length is an album that celebrates their regained freedom after the endless hassle with their "label" TVT Records. The Vancouver quartet into Seventies rock - even the stereo mix is old-school, guitars on the left and right, drums on just one mostly. Keith Richards is obviously a huge influence and the band emulates his gift for simple chord progressions quite admirably. And since Keef is into Chuck Berry, they band comes up with [...]

T HIS is the hardest POPPING Rock album I have heard in years. It is balls-out rock but alongside the bite and grit are some of the most pile-driving melodies in a rock structure this side of - well, I can not think of a band they remind me of in this context. But move this one to the head of my favorites of 2008 - THAT I am sure of. Now, this one is not for many of you, more than likely. DO humor me and go listen to the songs below, though. Really. [...]

After a very long hiatus, Hang the DJ is back! To usher in the return of the weekly column, Jay Martin aka DJ HWY 7 has submitted himself to the usual battery of questions. A designer by day, Martin got his start DJing vinyl at Dunes and has continued to spin ever since at many a venue around town. Below we get a peek into his DJ name's southern connection and its reflection of his taste and identity, what keeps him behind the decks and why oh why the music might cut out during his set. Today is a glorious day. It is a harbinger of the fall, of a September day. The sunlight seems to bounce off the leaves. The air is cool and dry. The sky, a brilliant blue, is the perfect backdrop. When I was little, the summer was my favorite season. I could play every day and didn't have to go home when the street lights came on. I went to sleep later and slept longer. On weekends, my parents took us to the beach, and we often went to the drive-in on a Saturday night. Supper was [...]

We can show you the full setlist for Guitar Hero 5 today. The Guitar Hero World Tour sequel is set to include a total of 85 songs when it arrives at September 1st. The new game offers the ability to create any combination of rock you want. Three microphones and one guitar? Okay. Two drummers and two guitars? No problem. Four drummers? Insane, but yes. Also new to the game is RockFest, which has five competitive head to head modes that are playable "online or in your living room." Other tweaks: you can play the entire set list [...]
Photos by Vivian Johnson. Words by Mark Stock. "We've played a lot of festivals, it's kind of our thing. But this is the prettiest festival I've ever seen." So were the words of Dr. Dog's Flea-like, raspy bassist, Toby Leaman. And he'd know. The Philadelphia band has done a number on musical gatherings lately, but perhaps none as fulfilling as this one. "This place makes me feel better about being a person," band mate Scott McMicken chimed in. The Pickathon crowd hooted and hollered, several in overalls kicking up [...]

As expected, the folks at Activision have been keeping us on the edge of our seats all summer, releasing information about Guitar Hero 5 little by little. About three weeks ago, for example, we learned that the game will be making unprecedented forays into glam, indie rock and hardcore . And just this Wednesday, Frank Deserto reported that Garbage woman Shirley Manson will have her very own avatar in Guitar Hero 5 . But today, we finally get the motherlode of information we've been waiting for. Activision has finally released the full list of [...]
After weeks of speculation, and an impending release date (September 1), Activision has finally announced the complete track list for Guitar Hero 5 . There's a lot of big songs included on the list--including the seemingly long-coming "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," Queen & David Bowie's "Under Pressure," and the Raconteurs "Steady As She Goes"--among many other songs. If there's one thing that comes to mind with the track list it's Rock Band , since it seems like Activision is finally willing to acknowledge that [...]

Although the complete tracklist has yet to be unveiled, creators of Neversoft 's forthcoming Guitar Hero 5 have reportedly revealed 24 new tracks to be featured in the upcoming game. As previously reported tracks by Kings of Leon , David Bowie , Beastie Boys , and Vampire Weekend are set to appear on the game. The release of Guitar Hero 5 will coincide with the release of " Rock Band: Beatles ". The highly anticipated Beatles edition of Rock Band is set [...]

As Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band competition continues to rage, both games seem to be putting out new editions - complete with increasingly amped-up song collections - every other week. (In fact, when Guitar Hero 5 comes out September 1st, it will be only 10 months younger than its predecessor, Guitar Hero World Tour .) And while the songs featured on this year's model have been slipping out slowly - gamers are already buzzing about The Rolling Stones ' "Sympathy for the Devil," Nirvana 's "Lithium" and The White Stripes [...]

Moonage Daydream was first released as a single in 1971 by Arnold Corns (one of David Bowie's pseudonyms), and was later released in 1972 on the album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars . In The Words and Music of David Bowie, James E. Perone writes, Bowie's vocal melody and arrangement in the song's chorus sections also closely resemble Elton John's contemporary work (notably "Tiny Dancer"), although "Moonage Daydream" includes enough of a touch of heavy metal-style-electric guitar and percussion in [...]

The release date of The Beatles: Rock Band has already been announced: September 9, 2009, while Guitar Hero 5 is currently scheduled to come out at a non-specific "fall" date. It wouldn't surprise me if these two games hit the shelves right on top of each other. It seems both games are already jumping all over the promotions game as well. Rock Band made its world premiere today with the surviving Beatles, Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, appearing alongside Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison at the 2009 E3 Media & Business Summit, [...]
