If you have been around here long enough, you'll see that we sort of love discovering new stuff that we hadn't heard of previously. Sometimes, like our friends Salt & Samovar and Murder Mystery , discovery blossoms into blind idolatry. Okay, we aren't that bad, but when we hear something that we like or that shows serious promise, we like to get the word out. In this instance, the band in question, The Whipsaws [ MySpace ] are an Anchorage, Alaska indie foursome ( mind...out of...gutter ) that have just released [...]

Color of Clouds are a charming indie-folk trio from Brooklyn, New York. The band is fronted by Kelli Scarr, formerly of electronica outfit Moonraker and the Americana-inspired Salt and Samovar. Scarr's velvety smooth voice (often likened to '1 2 3 42 singer, Feist) perfectly mixes amongst the band's serene instrumentation and ambient electro beats. Color of Clouds count Flaming Lips and Postal Service as just two of their influences, both of whom have been likened to the band's music by past critics. The band's shiny sweet songs are co-written between Kelli and fellow Color of [...]

As the names keep piling up for South by Southwest 2009 ( Decemberists at Stubbs ! Grizzy Bear! Devo!!), a more subtle development has caught our attention that - while less impressive than this year's roster of names - will no doubt prove far more useful to those intrepid souls heading down to Austin next month. Similar to the customizable schedule-maker that CMJ unveiled for last year's Music Marathon, mySXSW.com is a new platform unveiled on the SXSW site earlier this week that allows users to manage their own personal itineraries throughout the four-day event. [...]

South By Southwest ( SXSW ) organizers have confirmed a whole bunch of new artists for the forthcoming weeklong event. Download " Documents " by The Lisps | Friday night was the premiere of The Lisps ' musical, Futurity . By 10pm the bar at the Zipper Factory was filled with people waiting for the doors to the theater to open. Observing the impressive turnout, I overheard a friend of the band say, "I feel happy for them", which I'm pretty sure was a prevalent thought in the room. It's not very often that an indie band from Brooklyn puts a musical on. Jeremy Barnes was there; he was in town [...]

Monday: Glass Ghost @ Glasslands 9pm $6 Following a nice, long holiday weekend I'm sure a lot of you will be looking to get back into the show going right away on Monday night. Unfortunately there isn't too much going on, but there is this show at Glasslands. Glass Ghost is a new side project from Eliot Krimsky of the awesome band Flying. I've only checked out their Myspace so far but based on that and the reputation of Flying I'd have to say that they're definitely worth taking a chance on. [...]

The middle of fall, nothing like it. It is also a huge weekend for shows in the area. Quite a few big names are rolling through the area and pulling multiple city stops. Here's what to check out. The Pacific northwest has produce numerous indie acts. One of the biggest, The Decemberists are playing two shows this weekend with fellow Portlanders Loch Lomond . You can catch them at the Electric Factory Friday and Rams Head Live in Baltimore Saturday. mp3: The Decemberists - [...]
Barack Rock! continues to update its pro-Obama website with free music by bands like The Teenage Prayers, Bell, Sam Champion, Ra Ra Riot, Frank Bango, Clipd Beaks, Mobius Band, Tapes n Tapes, Sera Cahoone, Port O'Brien, Salt & Samovar, Bear Hands, Au Revoir Simone, Foreign Islands and many more.

I totally forgot to put up these photos from All Points West. I mean, the whole event was kind of meh, but Nicole Atkins really rocked the joint I think. Who knew she was going to ham (and egg) it up too. She's got a new EP out, aptly named, "Nicole Atkins' Digs Other People's Songs," including covers of Mama Cass, Nada Surf, and The Church. Available via digital download ( Amazon or iTunes) [...]
![How Does CMJ Choose Which Bands Get In? An Idolator Special Report [Idolator Goes To Cmj]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1314521_lg.jpg)
Just yesterday, intrepid reporter Kate Richardson asked a very pertinent question about CMJ 2008: "Who are all these bands?" Up until very recently, I worked as a publicist for an indie PR firm, and I know a ton of small acts because of it. Some I worked, some I tried to work, some I researched, and some I know from competitors and colleagues. I also read/skimmed nearly every magazine, indie Web site, and blog out there, particularly looking at coverage of small bands. Plus, I'm in a few bands myself, [...]

It's that time of year again, when bands both big and small converge upon New York City for a debaucherous , music-filled five days...that's right we're talking about the 2008 CMJ Music Marathon. Spanning Oct. 21 to Oct. 25, there's just too much to see. We'll do our best...this isn't our full time job. Come on! (in Gob voice.) Stark has enjoyed watching certain acts from all over the nation strive for immediate, Black Kids-like fame. Alas, they're not all that lucky. From Nashville to Chicago to NYC, Stark has highlighted [...]

" Delta Spirit 's music unintentionally mingles two trends percolating through indie rock right now. One is a return to more traditional folk -- minus the "freak" qualifier that is associated with Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart. The other is the conspicuous absence of irony, which has been a revered ideal since the Arcade Fire cropped up a few years ago sporting an avid sincerity. The Delta Spirit combines both methods into a stirring batch of rock that evokes Wilco circa "Being There," even though Mr. Vasquez isn't as enamored with psychedelic pop songwriting."
