Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]

Band: Sean Bones From: Brooklyn, NY Sound: A re-imagining of 70s reggae tropes, transported from Kingston to the sidewalks of Brooklyn Similar Artists: Desmond Dekker, Gorillaz, John Holt, A Band of Bees Listen: "Visions" Sean Bones' debut album Rings came out this past July, smack dab in the middle of summer's full embrace. Monarch very helpfully posted some stuff we've neglected to post over the last couple months, and reposted some older favourites from the last year, and it makes my job this week a lot easier. Specifically, the Basement Jaxx/Sam Sparro stuff is way up on my list right now. I was remarking last night that Basement Jaxx and Sam Sparro are different, in terms of electronic artists, for some reason. I will have to consider it some more, but I think it's because both make music with an album focus, whereas most of the other my other favourite artists [...]

Basement Jaxx has a new album in stores entitled Scars . The album is heavy, with features from Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Sam Sparro, Jose James, and more. The Lightspeed Champion assisted "My Turn" is perhaps the album's stand out track, while the Santigold feature, "Saga" takes a close second. The Jaxx will be in Chicago on Friday November 6th, and we also have some tickets to give away. Check back in a bit for that info, check out the Santigold song below.

Video's Best Watched Stoned? Ok, so I flew to Montreal for the weekend to take in the Bloody Beetroots show put on by our friends @ Saintwoods.com. It featured opening DJ sets by two of the producers that were included on the Panther Remix EP that was put out as a result of our remix competition. Torro Torro , who's rendition of Panther ended up in Lee Mortimers top 10, played a set filled with their own unique edits and remixes and Golden Gloves got the crowd raging with an epic drop of [...]
House music in Buzz Bands' house? Occasionally. Especially when it's as wildly eclectic as Basement Jaxx , the U.K. duo of Felix Buxton and Simon Radcliffe. The twosome has returned with "Scars," theirs sixth album and best since 2004's "Kish Kash," featuring all kinds of four-on-the-floor flavors and an impressive lineup of guests, including Yoko Ono, Kelis, Sam Sparro and, notably, Bellrays siren Lisa Kekaula. There's also Lightspeed Champion , aka Dev Hynes, who's out in front on the sweet "My Turn." The video, in all its dancing-bear glory, is the work of Tomek Ducki [...]

At this point, Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe's Scars has nearly as many videos as it does guest spots: the Yoko Ono/Grace Jones/Yo! Majesty/Cyndi Lauper/Santigold-featuring LP has churned out clips for breakout jam " Raindrops ," Sam Sparro's turn on " Feeling's Gone ," and a quasi-official clip of stage animations for the Kelis-lifted title track . It's album standout "My Turn"'s turn in the embed player, featuring a crew of bears destructing vocalist Lightspeed Champion's heart via dual attack: heavy duty tools and line dancing. It's all about the pains of being pure at heart, a [...]

<a href=" http://onethirtybpm.com/2009/1 0/21/basement-jaxx-scars/" Basement Jaxx Scars [XL; 2009] Links: Basement Jaxx | XL | Purchase on Insound Posted by Andrew Ryce on 21 October 2009 It begins with a confident declaration of identity – a shouted "Basement Jaxx" – followed by a remarkably skittish, unsure intro, something different for [...]

Part 1 By: Michael Tapscott Sade Sunday's sat cold with a lingering spirit, an unnamed and undefined amorphous blob that cried out, "you have a commitment here fellows!" So, I met with Josh, on a Wednesday, in his bedroom. As we rotated seats between his couch and his bed to play tracks of our own choosing that the other person could care less about, I thought to myself, "this shall not do." Josh and I met in Indiana University, our musical sophistication lies in those backwaters where we weaned each [...]

The temperatures are beginning to drop and the leaves are turning. This inevitably means Halloween is nearly upon us. I love the music that is typically associated with "fall" and what better way to celebrate than a continuation of our annual Halloween Compilation? In typical spooky form we've added an additional 13 songs to the list this year. Enjoy and feel free to discuss your favorite Hallweenesque songs in the comments section. Also, don't forget to register for the third annual March of 1000 Skeletons which will be happening October 24th in downtown Oklahoma [...]

Some rave pop from N-Joi who formed in 1990 when Nigel Champion and Mark Franklin were only 20. At this stage not a single instrumental dance track had entered the charts until N-Joi came along. Their first release on De-construction Records (BMG) was 'Adrenalin' which was a hard hitting, techno rave sound. It entered the national charts at No.19, which they also performed (without lyrics) on Top of the Pops. They soon were in big demand and hooked up with singer / performer Sam Sprackling aka Saffron (who would go on [...]

Basement Jaxx: Scars • MYSPACE • OFFICIAL SITE I'm surprised by the lack of buzz – despite today's unexpected Pitchfork review — surrounding the release of Basement Jaxx's new album. After all, they're one of the preeminent dance acts around, with a string of classic club tracks and fairly decent records to their credit during the last decade (starting with 1999's underrated Remedy ). But maybe those-in-the-know knew something about [...]
It's been a long time since 2003's Kish Kash . That is to say, if you were one of those who considered 2006's Crazy Itch Radio to be a mere transport point in the band's discography that didn't necessarily lead Basement Jaxx forward (this writer not included). I could go so far as to agree that the conceptual fourth album is their weakest full-length to date. Even though I do believe that the album did have its quirky points and distinctive charm, the lasting impact and "run over" feeling that their previous albums left the [...]

"It's a false colored world...now where do you fit in?" wonders Juliette Lewis on the song, Suicide Dive Bombers , from her recently released album, Terra Incognita . Given the opportunity to sit and chat with this dynamo, lends an abundance of answers to thoughts and wonderings on everything from her music to her independent spirit, on and off the stage. With a charismatic propensity for adventure and passion, Juliette Lewis enters the green room with an [...]

I went to the CD store recently and bought 3 recently-released CDs. Here now is where I will critique them for you and let you know whether its worth the trip down to your shop, or even the move over to iTunes for you lazy bastards. So, here we go Muse - The Resistance Had to get it. Im a Muse fan from a while back, I've seen them live and sung their praises from many rooftops especially in the faces of other Muse-haters who belong to this blog. I had very high expectations [...]
